i loved this book. although i was a bit apprehensive when i started reading it. and it takes a very different approach to the realm of the world where magic is common place and has levels of abilities and specialties for example as a body guard/security vs medical uses. i loved it and i can't wait to read siren song next and i think there is one called demon song but i've got to find them. i just saw this at the front of the library and grabbed it because i'm a vampire addict. a lightning-fast paced plot and a particularly engaging heroine (she's neither perfect nor omnipotent, there's actual peril, she's not TSTL, actual thinking goes on!!) help cover for an occasionally jerky writing style. there's way too many named characters to keep up with, and a whole lot of hints without any later explanation about a "traumatic past" all make this feel like the 2nd entry in a series rather than the first, rather like you're missing something you're supposed to already be in on. eh, who cares! the plot barrels on with plenty of forward momentum, and it's easy to care for such interesting people. the dreaded cliffhanger ending rears its head on an amazingly abrupt last page...good thing i have the actual 2nd one laying around on my ipad ready to go.

I feel in love with this book from the first chapter. We have a protagonist that is one tough kick-arse chick with real problems and deals with them realistically. She is a body guard/vampire hunter with a great (boarding on geekish) love for her weapons and gadgets. She is self supporting and works hard to pay the bills. When her life or her friends lives are in danger she does not stop to play footsie with some hunk she gets into gear and does something. Actually, there is only one brief romantic encounter and it is quickly put aside.(not in the heat of danger) The other characters are just as appealing, and yes there are some hot men but they have a job to do too. There were some hints of a possible love interest in the future.
What a fresh breath of air this story and characters were. I really liked her and respected the hard choices she had to make. This is Urban Fantasy the way I like it.

It took me a good minute to get into this book. I am not entirely sure why. I did realize that I felt a bit bogged by a ton of information that I just didn't feel I needed. I know that the author has to build the world for us and such but I felt like it wasn't effortless, I had to make myself read it to get to the good stuff

I enjoyed all the action and the bad-ass-ness (I am making it a word) that is Celia. She is pretty bad ass, I also felt so horrible for her when it gets to the car scene, even more so than the actual half vampire thing. I also though the whole "vampire sire" thing was going to be way more climactic and part of the story but...alas, maybe we will see more about that in future books.

I love the sexiness of Celia's men. Whew! I want me some Kevin! Is it to early to start making Team Kevin pins, stickers, t-shirts...nipple pasties? I loved the whole walking out of the water on the beach scene, yes. I liked the world that Cat Adams built in this book. This author-duo is clever and fresh when it comes to a market full of paranormal stories. I can't wait to read more about this world and Celia, the ending of this book sets up wonderfully for the next.

This was a surprisingly quick read! I managed to finish it in less than 48 hours! I must admit, I'm going back to this one. I started with the 4th book in the series, and so I knew some of the secrets that were to come towards the end of the book, but I was glued to my seat reading this story! Getting to know the characters from the beginning was a true joy.

It was a bit disjointed in parts. I found myself unsure of how many days it took for the story to take place, even though the characters were very aware of the changing from day to night. The characters in here sleep less than normal people, and still seem to function. There were also a few moments when I felt like the author (or authors as the case is here) were cheating a bit. What a nice way to clear up the "sire" issue, for instance. He needed to go away and to have him just taken care of for our main character was awfully convenient.

On the other hand, the fact that men keep showing up to rescue our heroine is explained away so well that I didn't find it as irritating. Probably because she is such a bad ass on her own that when she does need saving, it's somewhat refreshing.

This is a fun read, but don't look to it for anything serious. You won't tax your brain on this one, but it will get your heart racing in places. There is suspense, romance (sort of), heartache, the full emotional gambit. And done in a fairly light-hearted and very distinct voice.

I think I love this series!

After reading this, I had quite a few unanswered questions. At times the story was all over the place and couldn't decide what path it was going to take. It's left me confused about certain outcomes plus quite a few characters were introduced and I didn't always understand their significance with so little information being given about them.

Mainly I wanted to meet Celia's sire, learn about his relationship to Edgar, and more about these vampires in general but this was scuppered by the King of Rusland's actions.

The emotional relationships Celia had were interesting but the mystery behind her torture and her sister's death was never revealed. In fact her past although alluded to through dreams and little facts about her mother, isn't written in much detail. I would've liked more but I guess we'll see that in the sequel. Her siren status was new but didn't really fit with the rest of the book and just added more questions to the all ready long list.

    Side note:
It was also weird reading about characters whose names have a strong connection with me: Amy (my name) was the girlfriend of Kevin -my father's name -eww. I also don't get along with him so every time I read the name I couldn't help but feel a flare of anger. I tried really hard to not let that get in the way of my enjoyment of the book.

Nice entry in the genre. Sassy female lead with a supernatural twist with vampires and other ghoulies thrown in. Interested to see where the siren lead goes since not much has been done with them in other series.

Blood Song is an example of a novel where the saying “less is more” rings true. Unfortunately, the author seems to be convinced that more is more. More, in this case, means throwing every sort of paranormal entity that has ever existed and throwing them at the proverbial wall of a 350 page book and hoping that it sticks. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. In this novel, there are vampires aplenty, werewolves, half-vampires, telepaths, mind readers, mages, demons, militant priests who fight against demons, ghosts, and sirens. I’m sure I’m missing a bunch of paranormal entities. And here lies the problem. It becomes a jumbled mess after a while. Each of these things by themselves might be interesting, but all together, they lose their punch. In the novel, Celia Graves is a paranormal bodyguard, who has been hired to guard a prince of a small European country. Things go wrong, and she winds up getting bit by a vampire. Without a good explanation, she doesn’t fully become a vampire. Even more annoying, the vampire who sired her doesn’t even figure into the novel. Conspiracies abound. There are too many characters in general in this novel, and too many paranormal characters more specifically. Things happen with no explanation. The end result is that I quickly lost interest in the novel and never gained it back. This is a novel you will probably want to skip.Carl Alves – author of Blood Street

I guess it's OK if you like vampires and stuff, but I thought it was really SLOW. Too much setting up for future books and not enough of a memorable first book.

Celia Graves is attacked on a job. Meant to die, she instead gets saved...sort of. She ends up somewhere between human and vampire, what is referred to as an "abomination" That alone is a cool idea. Enough human to think straight and know right from wrong, but the supernatural perks of a vampire. My favorite! She is as tough as they come and can take care of herself. She has many potential love interests and I liked them all, but this book was definitely more about the action and the story and not too caught up in the romance.I really liked this book. You find out almost at the end she is more than just a vampire/human but has a little something else mixed in. This sets up for the next book that I WILL be reading

Cat Adams is another author that I have wanted to read for awhile, so when Tor offered their first three books for 2.99 I bought the first one.

Once I started reading this book, I devoured it. It is set in an intriguing world, filled with a number of paranormal creatures. What I liked were the fact that Celia was already a part of it as her job.
The world felt solid, and well researched both when it comes to vampires, werewolves and demons. I loved how holy water affected demons, and the silver affected werewolves. It was based on a lot of myths, with a twists.
Set against this background is Celia's struggle to adjust to her life as an abnomation. Which is clearly shown through the book. I liked it. I especially liked that Celia refused to enter Birchwoods, but at the same time recognized that it might be necessary.
As if this isn't enough, she also has to deal with her ex-boyfriend, and other life issues.

This was well written, but not perfect. I think some of the issues I had with it depended on my mood. The biggest issue I had was Celia. I had trouble connecting with her. I cared about what happened to her, but not much. Part of the reason were the fact that so much happened. Sometimes it felt as if the authors had gotten an idea, and added it without connecting it to the plot.

Will I read more books by Cat Adams? Maybe.

Ironically I really enjoyed this book though I am not sure what it was about. The plot was confusing and there were attempts at foreshadowing? but nothing came of them. The bad guys were a fuzzy group whose aim was never revealed. Why were they after Celia, who knows... What motivated them another mystery. Relationships were hinted at but not developed. And yet I am interested enough in the Characters and story to give book 2 a try.

This is the first book in this series and it turned out a heck of a lot better than i anticipated cause I'm so weird about reading from different authors. This one started out pretty damn fast and I read it and kept reading it until I was finished. Ms. Adams created a world where the monsters are there but they are feared of course and

Really looking forward to the next book in the series after reading this one. With so much vampire literature out there, I wasn't sure if I'd care about another group of characters. Great job Cat Adams. More please :)

In my head, I'm doing a fangirl squee because I loved this book! I know I say this a lot (mostly to my students) but this story was a total ride! The action moved quickly, the characters were great, the world building awesome, I even started clenching my jaw at the final chase scene because I was so into it and feeling the stress.Blood Song is set in a world where magic, demons, vampires, and warrior priests are common place. The reader learns more about the world as the story moves along, but in a way that supports the story. Vampires are a menace and you can pick up your anti-bat supplies at the local drug store. You can go to your local mage to put wards around your business or home, you can find out about your future, or go to a magical therapist to help you deal with traumas. It was great!Celia Graves is a body guard you grudgingly takes a job to guard a prince. She didn't like the retainer who came hire her or the lack of information. But hey, the money was really good, and the job could be very good for her business. The job, while distasteful, was just a few hours away from being finished when the strip club the prince was at was about to be raided by the cops. The prince, who had recently allied himself with his country's religious fundamentalists (the religion was never specified), could not afford the bad press, so Celia and the other body guards hustle him out the back entrance. As they were exiting, they were attacked by vampires. During the fight, Celia notices that the "Prince" changes forms (turns out he was a demon or at least a demon spawn) and traps the body guards in the ally to die. The others are killed, but one of the bats starts the spell to turn Celia. The spell wasn't completed due to a timely rescue, and Celia becomes an Abomination - a human with vampire traits. Celia gets fangs, the glowy eyes and pale skin (also kinda glowy), the speed, the healing, and a few other inconveniences. Because she looks so much like a vampire, people freak out, even in the middle of the day. I gotta say, those were some of my favorite bits. The corner shop attendant that freaks out and douses Celia in holy water - it cracked me up. Because she does the law abiding thing and informs the police of what has happened, the cops, the FBI, and the princes' government get involved. Circumstances conspire against Celia and she has three days to find out what happened, figure out who is still trying to kill her, and not end up locked away in a state facility because of her Abomination status.I loved that Celia came with baggage, was strong and good at her job, but was still socially capable. Yes she had a short fuse, but she could still work with people. ( I've been getting really tired of kick-ass heroines with zero people skills, it's getting old.) the other characters in the book were great and well written. There was a revelation toward the end that was a bit corny, but I can work with it.

Blood Song was a fast and entertaining read with plenty of turns in the plot that keep you guessing. The story line itself actually took a turn in a different direction that I wasn't expecting, which made it refreshing.Vampirism is something that isn't romanticized in this story's realms, it's actually more a death sentence. So they fact that Celia is only half-turned has it's good and bad sides, which lends the story an edge. The characters were easy to relate to and sympathize with. Especially, Celia, whose very down to earth and comes across as an average gal. The other supernatural personalities were more on the scary side with a hardcore set of rules they follow. All in all, Blood Song is a great introduction story that skims the surface of it's world of different myths and magic. I'm very much looking forward to reading Siren Song in September, I say bring it on.
