About this audiobook

From the New York Times-bestselling author comes the second entry in the popular Otherland series.

A small band of adventurers has penetrated the veil of secrecy that prevents the uninitiated from entering Otherland. But having broken into the amazing worlds within worlds that make up this universe, they are trapped, unable to escape back to their own flesh-and-blood bodies in the real world. And as dangers and circumstances split their party into small, widely scattered groups, their only hope of reuniting lies in returning again and again to the River that flows-in one form or another-through all the worlds.

But the odds seem to be completely against them as they-and the one outsider with whom they might join forces-become hopelessly lost in realms where an Ice Age tribe's fears can only be quenched in blood . . . where insects are as large and deadly as dinosaurs . . . where they are caught in the war between a man made of straw and one made of tin . . . where cartoon ads take on a life of their own . . . where humans strive to survive in the aftermath of an alien invasion . . . and where one among their party is actually The Grail Brotherhood's most terrifying weapon-a sociopathic killer who has never failed and whose current mission is to make certain that not even one member of this little invasion force lives long enough to reveal the truth about Otherland to the people of Earth.

River of Blue Fire is the second volume in Tad William's superbly imaginative Otherland tetralogy, following City of Golden Shadow while preceding Mountain of Black Glass and Sea of Silver Light.Luckily, the book began with synopsis of the first volume. There is no denying it, the Otherland books are huge on top of each being published several years apart, so I think including a synopsis was a very wise decision on the author's part. The members of small group that has been able to break in to the exclusive Otherland Network now find themselves trapped, unable to disconnect and return to their real lives. In the incredibly realistic environment of the highly advanced network, everything seems too real, including death. The nine members must solely rely on each other to survive, and yet none are ready to trust the others. Unbeknownst to them, their fears are justified -- one of them is assassin who is keen to keep the others under his wary eye. But soon, the group becomes fragmented and separated, forcing them to face an increasingly chaotic network while struggling to find each other again, a seemingly impossible task.As absolutely fantastic as the first book, River of Blue Fire was a great read, although not much has yet been resolved and more questions are raised. Also like in City of Golden Shadow, there are wonderful literary references (see if you can spot them all!) as the characters move through and inhabit different worlds, from a twisted version of the Wizard of Oz to a War of the Worlds that the Martians won, to anywhere in between.Experiments in Reading

The second in the series of four and the team are still hopping from virtual world to virutal world tying to find out what is happening on the web. How to save the children. And what is the The Grail Brotherhood tryingto achieve with Otherland.Through this second book though they find that not all that happens is reality as they see death occuring amongst the lands they visit and wonder how immortal they are here. But they also begin to grasp the secrets hidden behind the world - but still that knoweldge cannot come together and the group is still split in two and trying to get back together.

Good re-read listen as a bedtime book. There's so much that happens though I didn't remember it all and sometimes was too engaged to fall asleep even though I read it before

In the second volume, a minor threat is dealt with, but the misery of the whole world is revealed. There is a very ugly version of the :and of Oz, and our WWI vet is gradually beginning to grow back into himself. The whole thing is handled with great skill.

Outstanding science fiction. If the first book didn't do it for you then stick with this one for a bit, this is where things really start to take off. Loved this whole series.

I loved this series. Perfect if you enjoy cerebral sci-fi like the Matrix or Inception.

Otherland, a massive virtual reality network, is composed of an unknown number of worlds. It's funded by a mysterious group of the wealthy and powerful who call themselves Grail Brotherhood; and, though nothing is clear, the primary purpose of the Brotherhood seems to be the maintenance of their own long lives... even at the expense of countless other. Across the globe children are going into medically inexplicable comas, including Renie Sulaweyo's little brother Stephen. Renie suspects that Stephen's strange illness is somehow connected to Otherland. Renie and her friend, a South African bushman named !Xabbu, sneak into the Otherland network in hopes of saving Stephen. Once in they find they are not alone in their search, nor is the Otherland network all that it appears to be.Tad Williams has created an elaborate virtual reality landscape in this, his second installment of the Otherland series. I'm enjoying these stories as a delightful mix of fantasy and science fiction, two of my favorite genres. Most of the story occurs on a virtual reality network, yet each of the "worlds" (or VR servers) are as whimsical and imaginative as any fantasy novel. Warning: This book is not for the easily distracted. At one point I counted as many as nine (yes, NINE) separate storylines. I enjoy an overly complex plot as much as the next sci-fi/fantasy nerd, but even I found myself unsettled by all the jumping around.Still, with that caveat, I'm really looking forward to book three.

I could say that this is the sequel to City of Golden Shadows but as Tad states he considers Otherland and all its parts to be one huge novel. It's a testament to his writing skill that despite the number of characters and plot strands, I elected to skip over the synopsis and jump right back into the story, despite the eight months or so that passed for me between the two books. All the characters were still fresh to me and I had no trouble picking up were it had left off. I identify most with Orlando, his disability being not dissimilar from my own SMA Type III, albeit with in my case a much longer life expectancy. For some this is a virtual odyssey that they might not want to end - myself included.

Another excellent book in this series, see book 1 for the full review. This was still very much worth reading.

The first in a four-book series, Otherland: City of Golden Shadow is a complex suspense novel of the near future, where virtual reality has expanded to encompass all aspects of society -- and national, physical, and mental boundaries are limited only by the virtue or darkness of the imagination, offering an entirely new level of freedom to people in all walks of life. But a blood-chilling conspiracy involving the world's most powerful individuals now threatens to shatter this world to its very core....

Very ambitious series, that delivers quite well. Lots of details and storylines. I suggest reading the series without stopping for very long between books. Wonderful world creation and storytelling. Great character work. The whole thing is staggering.
