- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a book about a grumpy pessimistic man who wins a cruise to Bermuda. He ends up shipwrecked, forgotten and stranded on an island with a parrot who helps him build a boat from scratch. They both escape but then wreck into a bigger ship where the crew sees them and pulls them aboard. Eugene claims the parrot helped him to escape the island but the crew knows this parrot and swears he is a dumb bird. Eugene goes to take a nap but Lenny disappears while he is gone. The friends get reunited and both become happy for the first time in the entire book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A glass-half-empty kind of guy doesn't recognize his good fortune because he's too grumpy all the time. He meets a parrot friend who changes his thinking and makes him realize that life really can be "terrific".This is a hilarious picture book I'm looking forward to recommending! The narration is really funny and the pictures are nice. I think we all know of a grumpy grouch in our life. This book is about them! This is my second book from Jon Agee. I really liked "It's Only Stanley", too.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5When Eugene wins a cruise to Bermuda, his response - "Terrific... I'll probably get a really nasty sunburn" - epitomizes his entire approach to life. When his ship goes down, and he is stranded on a tiny desert island, our grouchy hero's chorus of "terrifics" indicate that such catastrophe is only what he expected. What he doesn't expect, however, is Lenny the talking parrot, who instructs him in ship-building, setting in motion the duo's escape...Since reading such picture-books as It's Only Stanley and The Other Side of Town, I have become an admirer of author/artist Jon Agee, whose dead-pan sense of humor never fails to entertain me. I was therefore pleased to learn that Terrific, originally published in 2005 and subsequently out-of-print, had been reprinted in this new 2017 edition. Good news, as it is a wonderfully entertaining book, with all the understated, oddball humor I was expecting, and its creator's signature cartoon-style artwork. The surprise ending is the icing on the cake! Recommended to all my fellow Jon Agee fans, and to anyone looking for children's stories about attitude (positive or negative).
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was so dang cute. A grumpy old man who uses sarcasm as a defense mechanism finds a parrot that will change his life forever. The parrot not only saves his life by teaching him to build a boat, but also saves his life from being a lonely old man for the entirety of his life. This book is "terrific."
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Pessimistic Eugene wins a cruise to Bermuda, but when he is stranded on an island, he meets a special parrot who helps him find his way off the island of pessimism. Cute story with nice pictures. Great for a classroom read-aloud.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Eugene's boat sinks, he gets stranded on an island, the only thing to eat is pomegranates, his only friend is a parrot, he has to build a boat and many more.. and everything is Terrific! This is a sarcastic and humorous story!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Funny tale following a grumpy(ish) old man, Eugine. His attitude gets him stranded on an island, where he meets a parrot. His previous answer to everything was "terrific", with a very sarcastic undertone. His attitude eventually gets better and in return he makes a friend.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Eugene seems to find the negative in various events he encounters throughout the book and sarcastically responds "terrific" to all of them. Eventually, he makes friends with a parrot and his final "terrific" is sincere. This was a laugh out loud funny story that could be used to make anyone's day.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Terrific is Eugene's favorite word. Is there anything that can turn Eugene's frown upside down? Eventually, yes, and it is his new found friend.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Eugene is a grumpy old man who always expects the worst, so it's hardly surprising that his surprise cruise to Bermuda is interrupted when the ship goes down, leaving Eugene stranded on an island with a talking parrot. A sweet story about a grouch who finds adventure and friends in unexpected places.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Good book, simple drawings, colorful. Eugene is a grumpy old fellow and he becomes friends with a parrot that saves his life. Fun book for children and the love of a pet.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Eugene expects the worst and usually gets it, even when he wins an all-expenses trip to Bermuda. This picture book follows Eugene as he is shipwrecked on an (almost) deserted island. Eugene's luck changes when he runs into a parrot with some unusual talents. An amusing tale for adults as well as children. This seemingly simple picture book has been highly lauded by book reviewers, librarians, and other children's book experts; I have to admit that while I enjoyed the book, I don't quite understand why it's been so highly lauded.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Eugene a grumpy, old man who speaks with a lot of sarcasm and acts this way in every situation-good or bad. He has the good luck of winning a cruise to Bermuda, but then gets stranded on a deserted island. Luckily a talking parrot on the island instructs him how to build a boat and the two are rescued by a boat of fishermen. They finally make their way to Bermuda, but the parrot doesn't want to stay with his rightful owners the fishermen, so he hides to stay with new friend Eugene. A cute book with sophisticated humor-would be fun for the reader and the listener.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A sweet story about a grumpy, old man who speak sarcastically and generally has a bad attitude being shipwrecked and finding a friend.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Such a cute book. I love that the parrot would only talk to him. The art seemed to match the story line in a strange way.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book has a great variety of voices making it a fun one to read aloud. It goes from one unbelievable scene to another, making it exciting and engaging. Eugene has good luck and much bad luck, but has the same reaction to it all. He wins a cruise only to get stranded on a deserted island. Luckily a super smart parrot instructs him how to build a boat and the two are rescued. They make it to Bermuda, but the parrot doesn't want to stay with his rightful owners so he hides to stay with Eugene. After all that adventure he finally found a friend!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Nobody is a lucky as him, or should I say unlucky. Vacation or not, this story has a great adventure that kids will love to read.
