About this audiobook

On the run from her former employer, Tess knows that she's vulnerable on her own amongst the Elder Races. That's why she decides to audition to become the human attendant of a powerful Vampyre of the Nightkind demesne. But while her position affords her the safety she seeks, her protector turns out to be more than she bargained for.

Xavier del Torro, the right-hand man of the Nightkind King, is both terrifying and alluring. While his true nature frightens Tess, she can't ignore the appeal of his innate sense of integrity and self-restraint. Thrown into Xavier's world, Tess must quickly learn to navigate the dangers-both to her life and to her heart. But the biggest threat comes from her own past . . .

On the run from her former employer, a pariah Djinn, Tess seeks refuge with the Vampyres by applying for a position as an attendant. Thrown into the terrifying world of the Nightkind demesne, Tess must deal with her own fears as well as the dangers posed by the creatures around her, and soon comes to realize that her Vampyre protector, Xavier del Torro, is more than merely the monster she perceives him to be.

Thea Harrison’s Elder Races series is an excellent example of the best the paranormal genre has to offer - rich and detailed world building, captivating characters and gripping storylines. While there have been one or two weaker installments, this book is definitely one of the best.

The political machinations and social intricacies of the Vampyre race serve as a thrilling backdrop to Tess and Xavier’s slow-burn, office type romance. Their relationship is intense from the start and the subtlety of their scenes together only enhance their breathtaking chemistry.

Xavier’s reputation as a dangerous and ruthless predator precedes him and Tess is under no illusions as to the risk she takes by becoming his employee. Her intelligence and spirit serve her in good stead, however, and the more time she spends with her protector, the closer they become until her initial fear and reticence fades away and their attraction blossoms into a fully fledged emotional connection - no insta-love here.

Readers expecting a continuation of the Wyr storylines may be disappointed as the focus is completely on the Vampyres. That said, there are tantalizing glimpses into the tumultuous relationship between Julian, the Nightkind King, and Melisande, daughter to the Light Fae Queen, whose story is in the next book.

All in all, Harrison is the quintessential storyteller whose works range from the fast-paced and action packed tales of the Wyr to the more sedate but no less captivating stories of the Vampyres and the Elves. Anyone looking for an entertaining paranormal read should look no further.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: A woman terrified of vampyres is forced by circumstances to become attendant to one in this captivating story in the Elder Races series.Opening Sentence: Cautiously, Tess peered at the crowd through a side stage door. The Review:Tess is in a very difficult situation. She’s managed to find herself on the bad side of a powerful pariah Djinn, who will stop at nothing to find and kill her. She needs to find protection, and fast. Even though she has an overwhelming fear of Vampyres, Tess figures her only chance is to become a human attendant to one, as even a Djinn wouldn’t risk ticking off the Vampyre nation by attacking an attendant. Thus, Tess finds herself in the presence of Xavier Del Toro, one of the most powerful Vampyres in the world. Despite her fear, Tess begins to realize that maybe not all Vampyres are bad. She finds herself slowly growing closer to Xavier and actually begins to feel at home. Malphas the Djinn is still out there though, as is a threat to Xavier’s happy home. Will Tess and Xavier both be able to survive long enough to figure out just what kind of relationship they would like to have?I’m always a little hesitant when going into an Elder Races novel, as they’ve been kind of hit and miss for me. I was also a little hesitant because this installment didn’t deal with any characters we’d met prevoiusly. Thankfully, my fears were unfounded because I thought this book was awesome. It was so good that I started reading one night at the 30 percent mark, and stayed up late to finish it because I simply couldn’t put it down. Considering I have an 8-month-old who sometimes sees 4am as a decent time to start the day, that is definitely saying something!I think my favorite thing about this book was the slow build up to the romance. Harrison obvoiusly took Tess’ fear of vampyres into account when writing the book, as she doesn’t just jump into the romance. Instead, we get to see Xavier slowly break down Tess’ defenses, not even realizing himself that his interest is more than friendly. When they finally do get together, it’s full of heat and chemistry, and is everything I could have hoped for.On the downside, because of the slow build up, when they finally do get together, the rest of the romance sometimes feels a little rushed as the book pushes towards the end. This wasn’t a huge deal for me because I was so invested in the story and the characters, but I thought it worth mentioning. All in all, this was a wonderful addition to the Elder Races series. I didn’t find myself missing the regular characters at all and really enjoyed the inside look at the Vampyre government. In fact, while the book doesn’t quite measure up to my feelings for book one, it is still definitely a five star read for me. I think fans of the series will not be disappointed and even newcomers to the series may enjoy this one as well. I’m definitely looking forward to the next one now!Notable Scene:Galvanized into action, she yanked out the keyboard tray and toggled the screen on, as she muttered under her breath, “Ten minutes? Excuse me, but you’re fucking nuts. It takes time to look for this kind of thing.”“Nine minutes now.” He didn’t sound in the least perturbed by her agitation or her swearing. Her mind raced through various possibilities. She had one potential rabbit in her hat that she might be able to use on such ridiculously short notice – she would bet everything in her inaccessible bank accounts that he was on the inside of the Evenfall security network. That would mean the network firewall would be configured to recognize his IP address and his email program.Maybe she could get lucky. The quickest way to bypass firewall security was from the inside, through a client-side attack. If she could hack his email, she could send a rough, simple malware program to exploit the breach. He said he wanted her to “break through” the firewall. He didn’t say how, or what she should do when she did, or that it had to be an elegant job.“Six minutes.”“Shut up,” she hissed. Her fingers flew across the keyboard. She hadn’t hacked in a while. It felt good, running hot against the clock. It felt crazy, and she wanted to laugh like a lunatic, except she had already sworn at one of the scariest men she had ever met, and she thought she should keep her mouth shut for a few minutes. He said, “Time.”She sat back. “You’ve got mail.”Sleek as a panther, he moved up behind her. She was intensely aware of his closeness as he leaned over to look at the screen. As he did so, the cell phone he held in one hand buzzed. He thumbed it on. “Yes, Gavin?”On the other end, she could clearly hear a strange male voice demanding, “Did you leave your email program running while you set her to hack into the network?”“Of course I didn’t,” said Xavier. “I locked it down.”“Well, I want to fucking know how she fucking sent a blast email to fucking everybody from your email address.”She pulled back so Xavier could take control of the desktop, open his email account and click on his new mail.In big red letters, the body of the email said: YOU SUCK.FTC Advisory: Berkley/Penguin provided me with a copy of Night’s Honor. Listened for Review (Tantor)Overall Rating: 3.50Story Rating: 3.00Character Rating: 4.00Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating)First Thought when Finished: I really loved Tess and Xavier in Night's Honor by Thea Harrison. They are fantastic characters and it was really refreshing to see a couple be open with each other without it being forced. My only "complaint" (not a big one) is the pacing in this story. It took forever for anything to happen but after it did I was cheering like a crazy gal.NOTE: I felt like this was more of a prep book for the next one. I would have liked more focus on Tess and Xavier.Audio Thoughts: Narrated By Sophie Eastlake / Length: 9 hrs and 32 mins Sophie did a great job with both Tess and Xavier! I wasn't sure how I was going to accept Xavier being done by a women but she did well. I also like her pacing and emotion. I would recommend this one on audio.Part of the Read It, Rate It, File It, Done Reviews

This book started out very slow as there was ok lot of backstory needed for this and the next book. Halfway through there is barely a relationship between the hero and heroine. But the author did a great job of building the relationship late in the book. This hero may end up as one of my favorites.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.allthingsuf.comNIGHT’S HONOR leaves the usual Elder Races Wyrkind behind and takes us within the cloistered walls of the Vampyre enclaves. More of a classic romance and straight up thriller than anything else, Tess and Xavier Dave danger from a few avenues before the action spills back out into the greater world of Elder Races politics.Despite several familiar romantic tropes at the front end, more of NIGHT’S HONOR focuses on the action aspects of the plot than any particular chemistry between Tess and Xavier, Much of the chemistry felt added in at the end, making this a less compelling love story than usual for the Elder Races series. And while it was fascinating to see a story from within Vampyre society (unlike Carling’s isolation), Xavier’s place in the familiar Elder Races world often feels peripheral. Though his liege lord is more familiar, the Nightkind King has been an antagonist in the past, meaning I wasn’t particularly invested in his political or romantic fate on the outset. The combination of these two factors meant it took awhile for the Vampyre conflict in this book tot feel important. Most of these criticism are rooted in reading and enjoying too many Elder Races books in the past, new and casual readers will be able to enjoy this romance as a standalone story without the expectations and attachment to other parts of the Elder Races world. While Patricia Briggs has offered few glimpses through Stephan’s doorway, NIGHT’S HONOR feels like a more romantic glimpse of the potential symbiosis between vampires and their human companions. Deepening the mythology and politics of yet another aspect of the Elder Races society, NIGHT’S HONOR is an enjoyable read for fans and accessible to new comers.Sexual Content: Sex scenes.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Vivacious Valkyrie - Marta:*Copy gifted in exchange for an honest reviewThis is the seventh full length book in the Elder Races series and it's a series that I love! These books feature various types of creatures from Wyr who naturally can have both an animal and a human form, to Fae - both light and Dark - we even get to meet powerful Djinn, but perhaps the most complicated of all would be those said to have had the Serpent's Kiss, and most commonly referred to as Vampyre! These feared and unnatural creatures are created not born, however they start Vampyres will do whatever is necessary to survive!Tess is on the run and there's no place to hide. She needs the sort of protection that only a truly powerful member of the Elder Races could offer but although down she's not out! Tess has a plan, become an attendant of a Vampyre and maybe just maybe the threat of starting an all out war to get at her will save her life. Vampyres gather once a year to choose new servants and Tess wangles her way in but she wasn't prepared to be chosen by the monster known as Xavier del Torro! He is the right hand man of his king and his fearsome reputation for violence is legend but for some reason he offers her a position within his home and it's a chance for safety that Tess cannot turn down. Xavier is master in his own home and bows down to none but there's something about the human Tess that intrigues him. Tess is clearly terrified to be near him so why would she choose to offer herself as an attendant? She is intelligent and capable so why would she want to hide from the world? Xavier has no qualms in taking her in but what he won't do is take her at face value , oh no if Tess has a secret then Xavier will find out what it is! Tess might have run towards one monster but if that's the case just what is following her? Maybe she is out of the frying pan and into the fire! When you pick up an Elder Races book as a reader you expect action and romance, but this story has a different feel to it. It's not as action packed as some but focuses more on a journey of self discovery. The heroine Tess is strong and capable and oh so brave when she faces Xavier, the Vampyre she offers her blood to but hers is a complicated life. I really liked her as a heroine and thought her both plucky and quite bold but I wasn't convinced that her plan actually made sense. Hiding within the household of one of the most prominent Vampyres would surely get her noticed! Luckily Xavier's plans for her meant she was kept secreted away which allowed her character to develop and gain insight.Xavier was a complete revelation as previously he has been portrayed as a character that not many would find pleasant! In this story we see a side to him that surprises the reader, he is a man of great depth and nothing seems to faze him. His checkered history is explored but most surprising is his humanity . This is a vampyre with a soul who actually cares and his level of sensitivity was astonishing to read. He's not the usual tall dark brooding muscle bound hero, no he is only slightly above average in form and yet his presence is such that he dominates and fills the space he inhabits. Clearly a man of action but wily enough to know how to use words . Yes he is impressive!I realize some readers might be disappointed that a Vampyre was the hero in this story and the heroine Tess seems to come out of nowhere but that's what I enjoy about this author's work . Expect the unexpected with Ms Harrison and enjoy the ride because no matter what these larger than life colourful characters will delight and enthral you.
