About this audiobook

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben, a heart-pounding thriller about the ties we have to our past…and the lies that bind us together

It’s a profile, like all the others on the online dating site. But as NYPD detective Kat Donovan focuses on the accompanying picture, she feels her whole world explode as emotions she’s ignored for decades come crashing down on her. Staring back at her is her ex-fiancé, Jeff, the man who shattered her heart—and whom she hasn’t seen in eighteen years.

Kat feels a spark, wondering if this might be the moment when past tragedies recede and a new world opens up to her. But when she reaches out to the man in the profile, her reawakened hope quickly darkens into suspicion and then terror as an unspeakable conspiracy comes to light in which monsters prey upon the most vulnerable.

As the body count mounts and Kat’s hope for a second chance with Jeff grows more and more elusive, she is consumed by an investigation that challenges her feelings about everyone she’s ever loved—her former fiancé, her mother, and even her father, whose cruel murder so long ago has never been fully explained. With lives on the line, including her own, Kat must venture deeper into the darkness than she ever has before and discover if she has the strength to survive what she finds there.

Harlan Coben desperately needs a good editor to help him erase the worst plot holes. Kat and Jeff are completely unlikely (and unlikable) characters.

This book was okay... I didn’t love it, but it held my interest. I thought the romance part was pretty awful- shmaltzy and trite. I almost stopped listening after the beginning because the story leads with the romance. It does get better, though, and the rest of it is quite good.

Way, way too much gore, which is too bad, and definitely something I could do without. So let that be a warning (!☺️) to those of you, like myself, who don’t much appreciate that kind of thing. Good buildup to the climax of the story with some pretty shocking stuff toward the end which I definitely did not see coming!

Overall, I would say this is a decent story worth a listen. The narrator did a fine job!

Too many story arcs, that don't quite mesh as well as they should, with an annoying protagonist. The main story arc, however, keep me interested enough to make it to the end.

A well paced book. A bit predicable at times but the main character is interesting and I would welcome a second book with her in it.

Very interesting read and a definite build to the ending. I'm giving this three stars only because there were a lot of characters and nicknames and at times it made it a bit difficult to keep up with via audio book.

The pacing was a bit off in this novel - it was quite slow to get going and then there was an awful lot crammed into the final quarter. Things came together plot-wise very satisfactorily at the end.

I loved this Harlan Coben book. I have read so many of his. I am a fan. You get right into his books. And just as Kat Donovan does, she takes you right into the crime and you know right away something isn't right. There is more than one case going on at a time. Kat is checking into her Dad's death who was also a cop. This happened 18 years ago but she was never satisfied with the outcome. And now the man in prison for it is dying.
Then we have a case involving missing people who have all been on the same dating site. This is a very scary one with multiple murders. The people involved were very sadistic when they killed some of them. Sick people.
But there is of course the inevitable love story mixed into all of this between Kat and Jeff an ex fiancé she finds on this same dating site. Or she thinks she finds there.
That is all I am going to say. It is worth the read. It will pull you right in. You will not want to put it down.
Thanks for another good one Harlan Coben. We love your books. Keep them coming.

Not up to Coben's usual standard, but still worth reading. It's somewhat darker than most of his books in terms of the sort of crimes depicted, and lacks Coben's usual humour. Some twists and turns, most of which you'll see coming, with a reasonably satisfying conclusion.

I honestly don't remember when a book pissed me off as much as this one. I listened to the audiobook until the last hour and I just couldn't take it any more. I was interested in how the plot turned out but not enough to listen to the way this author demeaned women and made his characters into people I would vote off the island first. The main protagonist, especially, had less credibility than most comic book characters. I have read a few of Coben's stand alones that were pretty good. But I'm never wasting my time or money on another one.

Disappointed. Disgusted. Not up to Coben's standards. Pretty mushy; after struggling to listen for about an hour, I gave up. No mystery, just gooey, gushy -- not my style.

Readers familiar with Harlan Coben's twisty thrillers, where few things turn out to be exactly what they seem, may be able to figure out one of the mysteries here, just by going with that gut feeling Coben implants and then tries to dissuade you from.that continues to work well in this entry, but other parts of the book don't.Surfing on a dating website, NYPD cop Kat Donovan is startled to come across a profile posted by a long-lost boyfriend, apparently using an alias. While she's still puzzling this out, she's contacted by a college student who insists his mother has gone off for a romantic weekend with LLB, but something isn't right.A suitably scary plot unfolds here, with extortion and murder oozing out of every pore. The problem is that there's a sub-plot, involving Donovan's search for the truth about the murder of her father, also a cop. And even Coben can't make these two lines mesh, nor can he bring everything to any kind of satisfying conclusion.

What begins as glib conversation on dating and past relationships turn into a tense cyber crime investigation that gets personal for the NYPD detective. Some dialogues stretched a bit; overall good quick read with enough sub plots and twists to get me hooked.

I had great hopes for this book. Perhaps I expect too much when a book receives an average rating of almost four stars. Or, perhaps I should have known this was not going to be a classic work of modern fiction when the author, in the opening sentence of the book, introduces his chief protagonist as Kat Donovan. Yup, Kat Donovan. Has anyone ever actually met someone named Kat? I mean actually met someone.

The central theme of the book was timely, especially in this age of electronic social media and instant gratification. But, just like having two thousand friends on Facebook, the characters in this book are without depth, or interest, without substance. Unless you embrace the sappy romantic aspects of this book, which seems more fitting in a Harlequin Romance novel, none of these characters mean anything at the end of the book. I didn't care if Kat got back with her past lover, or about her dead father's secret, which is completely superfluous to the plot and seemed to be added simply to increase the word count. I hate to admit it, but the only character I found the least bit interesting, wanted to know a bit more about, was the villain. I'm no serial killer, honest!

I considered rating Missing You at one star instead of two, but the author did keep the story moving, albeit, less than dramatically. Additionally, it was reasonably short, so I didn't waste a great deal of my time.

I will close this review by saying that I have a couple other Harlan Coben novels in my digital library and I have moved them both the the bottom of my reading list.

Obviously this is an adult book that I was NOT reading in consideration for my middle school shelves! Bought it because it was one of those "buy two get a third book free" kind of deals and the blurb on the back hooked me. Kat's friend signs her up with an online dating service, and while Kat is looking through the photos, she sees the face of her ex-fiance who she hasn't seen in eighteen years, but still loves. When she reaches out to him, however, his response is uncharacteristically aloof, and he almost acts as if he doesn't remember her. No spoilers, but I only half predicted where it was going.

Harlan Coben is at his best in Missing You.One of my favorite authors, Coben's artistry at constructing a book is unmatched. At the center of this book is Kat Donovan, a cop still trying to come to terms with the murder of her cop father years ago. Unconvinced that the details of the murder are true, Kat begins an investigation that raises more questions than answers. Then, there's the matter of her ex-fiancé, Jeff, who having jilted her 18 years ago suddenly appears on a dating site under another name. While trying to track down Jeff and get some closure, she stumbles across a missing person tied to the same dating site who, according to the missing woman's son, disappeared with Jeff. As her search continues, she discovers that there are more missing persons connected with the site, all going on a trip to meet their mystery love, and none of them ever returning.Story twists and interesting characters are expertly woven into this story and keep you reading until the very last page.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Missing You by Harlen Coben is a 2014 Dutton publication. I am one of the most disorganized readers you will ever meet. I have such a hard time keeping up with series and easily lose track of what order the books should be read in, so when I have a chance to pick up a stand alone by an author who never fails to deliver, then I grab it, no questions asked. Coben didn't let me down, and kept me riveted to the story from start to finish. Kat's friend sets her up an account with a dating service and out of a sense of obligation, she logs on to the site and gets the shock of her life when a picture of Jeff, the love of her life and former fiance also has a profile on the site. After some waffling, she goes for broke, sending him a message with the link to “their song” - Missing You by John Waite. But, the response she gets doesn't make sense. Enter an eighteen year old kid who is convinced something has happened to his mother after she goes on vacation with a guy she met online and Kat begins to notice something kind of fishy about this dating service. Also, on Kat's mind is the impending death of the mobster who killed her father. Desperate to learn the truth about her dad's death she tries a last ditch effort to get him open up to her before he dies. This shocking confession leads Kat back eighteen years as everything she thought she knew was a now in question. There is a lot going on in this one. Kat's search for the truth about her father, the dating service, missing women, and Kat's puzzlement over what she learns about Jeff who has been out of her life for many years now. There are some really twisted up bad guys in this one, some kick butt action from some very brave people, lots of Coben's signature twist and turns, and love story that is sure to break your heart. Other than the abrupt ending after dumping some major information on me, the only other compliant I had was that now I have the infernal song in my head!!

He's done it again. Harlan Coben has once again written a winning mystery/thriller in MISSING YOU. Or should I say "mysteries/thrillers" (plural)?MISSING YOU has more than one mystery going on, one characteristic of all Coben novels. These mysteries all involve Kat (Katerina), a New York police detective whose father, also NYPD, was murdered 18 years ago. Of course, that's one of the mysteries: who did it? Kat also searches for a missing woman, who, it turns out, is one of several people who trust someone they met online, in another of the mysteries. And another mystery has Kat finding her old fiance, who now goes by another name, on that same online dating site.As usual, this Coben novel is a can't-put-it-down thriller. And, as usual, I repeatedly wondered as I read it, how can Coben keep writing himself into seemingly unsolvable mysteries, only to solve them satisfactorily every time? One disappointment: although MISSING YOU gets interesting sooner than most books, it is missing one characteristic common to all Coben novels until the last few years. That is, his novels were always tnrilling right away, from page 1 or 2. MISSING YOU didn't grab me until the end of Chapter 1, not bad but not up to Coben's old standard.
