    Beverly Cleary is one of America's most beloved authors. As a child, she struggled with reading and writing. But by third grade, after spending much time in her public library in Portland, Oregon, she found her skills had greatly improved. Before long, her school librarian was saying that she should write children's books when she grew up. Instead she became a librarian. When a young boy asked her, "Where are the books about kids like us?" she remembered her teacher's encouragement and was inspired to write the books she'd longed to read but couldn't find when she was younger. She based her funny stories on her own neighborhood experiences and the sort of children she knew. And so, the Klickitat Street gang was born! Mrs. Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards, including the American Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, presented to her in recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature.       My kids say this is their favorite book of the series. They seemed to find the part at the football stadium particularly exciting. When we finished listening to the last CD, my daughter confirmed with me that this was the last book in the series then said, "Oh. I feel sad now."

      What's funny is that, before the book started, she predicted that because it was the last book in the series and because Ribsy was getting older, the dog would probably die at the end of the book. I wonder if she'd have felt more or less sad had Ribsy pulled an Old Yeller.

      (Incidentally, I don't think it's really a spoiler that Ribsy doesn't die since Beverly Cleary said in an interview that part of her purpose in writing the books was giving kids a "boy-and-his-dog" story that didn't end in the death of the dog, but I apologize if learning this totally ruins anyone's experience of the series.)

      While I enjoyed hearing the story from the dog's point of view, I wouldn't put this one at the top of the Henry Huggins heap. The progression of the book got a little tedious after awhile. Ribsy finds people to stay with until he remembers that he's looking for Henry. He then goes running and sniffing around Portland again until he finds another family and the cycle begins again. About the fourth family in I thought, "Not another one! Haven't the Hugginses found the darned dog yet?"

      But that's really a tiny complaint. Mostly I liked the book, and I thought the change in point of view for this last book was interesting. And now I want to re-read the Ramona books again.

      This nook was simply amazing. Such an excellent story about the infinite love of a dog and his boy/person.

      I absolutely loved Henry and Ribsy as a six year old, so decided to read this to my own six-year-old before bedtime. But I didn't enjoy this experience -- this is perhaps one of the weaker stories in this series, and doesn't make for a very good read-aloud. The chapters are too long for one thing, and the scenes are made up of Ribsy lurching from one house to the next, and you know he's eventually going to find Henry again, and you know approximately when that will be, because you know how much of the book you've got left.I probably shouldn't have started with this one, when introducing Beverly Cleary's work to my daughter. I chose it because she loves dogs. But she lost interest, and for completion's sake, I finished it quickly myself. Which brings up an interesting point about kids and reading -- while I admire the finishing-of-books, there's really no point in persevering when it comes to kids. Turns out she'd still rather prefer picturebooks rather than illustrated chapter books like this one, and I see no reason to rush her through that stage.One thing this book does well -- for kids who are enjoying the story, at least -- is helping the reader to feel smart. When Ribsy goes up a building in a 'little room', the child reader knows that Ribsy is in an elevator, though the word 'elevator' is never used. Oh well. I hope the Ramona Quimby series is as good as I remember it.

      After a shopping trip gone somewhat wrong, Henry's dog, Ribsy, ends up lost. So begins an adventure of ups and downs on this lively and loyal canine's quest to find his way back home in Ribsy by author Beverly Cleary.Gee. I know I read this book at some point during my childhood, and I'll bet I enjoyed it. I also think it's very likely that I enjoyed it even more this time around.While this is another Henry Huggins and Ribsy tale, this one is mostly from middle-aged Ribsy's point of view. (Double gee. Did that detail ever stick out to me before, that friendly and enthusiastic Ribsy is middle-aged?)This book didn't have quite as many laughs for me as other Henry books, but I felt just as much. Felt for Ribsy through all of the twists and turns on his search for home and his favorite boy. Couldn't help but smile at Ribsy's antics and his "making every effort to be charming" even under new and strange circumstances.It's funny how insightful this story manages to be, giving glimpses into the lives of an interesting mix of people along the way. And with the way various moments during Ribsy's journey tugged on my heartstrings, the moments of excitement were all the more satisfying.Yup. Emotional, exciting, and satisfying all around. A book with plenty more reasons why Cleary is still my all-time favorite children's book author.

      I started to read this to my 7 year old, but I think he's still a bit young for it. So just for the fun of it I read it on my own and it's a wonderful little dog story without being too sappy. I'm only a little familiar with Beverly Cleary's books but not too many author's are like her. Loved the illustrations!

      "Ribsy" is another entry in the Klikitat Street series of books. We've met Ribsy the dog in other books by Beverly Cleary, such as "Henry and Ribsy" and "Henry and the Paper Route", but this story is about a slightly older and (supposedly) wiser Ribsy. Ribsy wants to go for a ride in the new car to the shopping center, and finally gets his way. However, he winds up lost, and adopted by a series of different people who just aren't the same as his best friend, Henry.If you like Beverly Cleary books, or you just like reading about kids and animals, you should enjoy "Ribsy".
