About this audiobook

Sixteen-year-old Trinity Foxx is used to her grandfather's crazy stories, so she doesn't believe that the treasure he brought home is a real dragon's egg. Not until their home is invaded by soldiers trying to steal it and a strange boy telling her the world as she knows it will be wiped out in a fiery dragon war - unless they work together to stop it. Meanwhile, there's a different voice whispering to Trinity, calling to her, telling her what to do…because the dragon in her egg is not ready to give up without a fight.

Author

Mari Mancusi

Mari Mancusi always wanted a dragon as a pet. Unfortunately the fire insurance premiums proved a bit too large and her house a bit too small—so she chose to write about them instead. Today she works as an award-winning young adult author and freelance television producer, for which she has won two Emmys. When not writing, Mari enjoys goth clubbing, cosplay, watching cheesy (and scary) horror movies, and her favorite guilty pleasure—videogames. A graduate of Boston University, she lives in Austin, Texas with her husband and young daughter.

Scorched is the first of a three book series about Trinity who is the chosen or "Fire Kissed" as she is called in the book. Her grandfather runs a failing archeological museum and places all hope to stay open on what turns out to be a dinosaur egg that has been sent to him. Trinity has been chosen to bond with the dinosaur when it hatches. She quickly finds out that being "Fire Kissed" has put her in the middle of a war between a faction called Draken who believe that dinosaurs will save the world in the future and dinosaur hunters who believe that they will destroy the world. Twins Caleb and Conner are each members of these opposing sides, but soon learn that the war isn't as black and white as they think. Both are attracted to Trinity as she is to them, creating a complicated love triangle that I assume will continue through the next two books. Scorched started out being told from Conner's perspective and probably would have been a better story if it had continued that way. In the end, Trinity's emotional conflicts dominated and ultimately bogged down what could have been a great story. However, overall this was a good book and should continue to provide good reading through the next two books.

What is my favorite mythical creature, you ask? The answer would definitely have to be dragons. I love everything about them, from their scaly hides to their impressive wingspan. Maybe it's because of my addiction to Fantasy, but I'm a dragon fan! Needless to say, I was extremely excited to read Scorched. I already love Mari Mancusi's writing, but then adding in dragons? That's a win in my book!

The first third of the book knocked my socks off. I adored Trinity from the start, and I loved that she was so close with her grandfather. Mancusi slowly built up a story where a boy from the future, and a girl from the present were intertwined in an amazing way. Connor has been sent back to get rid of the threat that will lead to the apocalypse in his time, but once he meets Trinity he just can't shake his feelings for her. Sound slightly sweet? I'd agree! I loved Trinity and Connor during this part of the book, and the added action kept me reading on.

Then Caleb came into the picture and things changed. I can't really explain too much without spoiling things for potential readers, but the twin aspect is a little weird. Caleb is supposed to be the exact opposite of Connor but, in all honesty, they are pretty similar. I was introduced to the Draken, to the Nether, and to the way dragons were born. So much squished into one part of the book made the ending feel more than a little rushed. If only the ending had been as well done as the beginning, I would have given this a much higher rating. I enjoyed the world building, liked the characters, and of course loved the dragons. It was really the pacing that was off.

I'm willing to forgive a lot, since this is the first book in the series. Truth be told, I know for a fact I'll be back to read more of Trinity's story. I can't wait to see what happens to her, to Connor (who is my favorite by the way) and to the dragons. A bit of a slow start, but I know things will pick up. Bring on more dragons!

Scorched by Mari MancusiFirst in a Young adult paranormal series. The first dragon egg is found and hatched in one timeline while in a future timeline scores of dragons have destroyed the human world. It’s now up to Trinity, Connor, Caleb and baby dragon Emmy to make the right choices to save the world. A fast moving, exciting beginning to an adventure built on hope, positive morals and values. And dragons. And realizing there may be more than one truth. Not a cliff hanger, but definitely not the end of the adventure. They still have to save the world!I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

Mari Mancusi brings us DRAGONS!!!! I love me some dragons, and now I really want one as a pet. :P

I love that we have so many different perspectives. We are able to see the situation from different points of view. Each one is drastically different. You don’t really know who’s path is the right one. You can see why each person does the things they do, but you have doubts with how each one will play out. I won’t go into too much more detail because I don’t want anything to be spoilery.

Trinity has had to deal with a lot of extenuating circumstances. She’s has to be strong when it comes to everything, and it’s hard to remember she’s only a teenager. Trinity tries to be as strong as possible when it comes to the mess she finds herself in. The only thing I didn’t care for was the whole instant attraction thing. But I can understand why she feels those emotions. Connor is intense. He’s a strong character, that only wants to do what he thinks is right. He’s also kind of bossy. Caleb, on the other hand, is more of a free spirit. He takes things as they come, and wants to make Trinity understand that dragons aren’t as bad as some make them seem. Then there’s Emmy. She’s made of pure awesome.

There are quite a few plot twists. Some are predictable, but some aren’t. There are some action scenes, but in this book we basically get to learn who people are and some of the history. I definitely recommend this to lovers of dragons. I can’t wait to see what this trio faces in the future.

Read for Fun/Listened for Review (Library/Brilliance)Overall Rating: 3.75Story Rating: 3.75Character Rating: 3.75Audio Rating: 3.50 (not part of the overall rating)Read It File It (Short Review: I have to admit that the 2nd half of Scorched by Mari Mancusi really hooked me! The beginning wasn't bad but it took a bit till I was invested in the characters (Trin is a great leading character but neither brother was hooking me in the beginning. After everything clicked though the book was hard to put down. It was just downright enjoyable! Confession: I just started playing WOW again so the dragons were a big pull to me reading this story and Mari didn't let me down!Audio Thoughts: Narrated By Miriam Volle / Length: 9 hrs and 48 mins I thought Mariam Volle did a decent job with the narration. I think book 2 will probably work better for me than book 1 because I am now used to her male voices (those took me a bit to warm up too). Her pacing was terrific though and I thought she was spot on for Trin!

I have had my book on this TBR pile forever. When I saw the second book in the series, Shattered, was due to release in September I thought I should hurry up and give this is a read. It was a good book, kind of a blend of Eragon and Terminator. There were things I really liked about it, but for some reason I never really got caught up in the story.Trinity lives with her grandfather who collects old things, they are barely scraping by. That is until her grandfather finds what he is convinced is a dragon’s egg. Connor has been sent from the future to make sure Trinity does not bond with the dragon in the egg, if she does if could mean the end of the world. Caleb is Connor’s twin brother and he is sent from the future to save the egg and Trinity and make sure they bond; he is pro-dragon and works with the Draken organization in an effort to save the dragons.Okay I am having a hard time reviewing this book. I thought the characters were okay, thought it was an easy read, and enjoyed the interesting plot (which was an odd mix of Eragon and Terminator). However, for some reason though I was just never excited to sit down and read this book. I had to force myself to sit down and read it, once I was reading it I was engaged and it was a fast read...but I am not sure why I just wasn't excited to start reading it again once I stopped.I think part of it was all the switching between Trinity, Connor, and Caleb. You switch viewpoint so often (the chapters are very short) that it is hard to get to know and engage with the characters. They just didn’t have much depth for me and were a bit stereotypical.Trinity was kind of a blah heroine for me. Sometimes she shows some spirit and moxy, but for much of the story she lacked personality for me. I found her dragon to be much more interesting and amusing.Connor is your typical follow the law to the letter type of character, but of course his love for Trinity changes him. Caleb is your typical be a complete rebel and ass, but again his love for Trinity changes him. As I have mentioned in other reviews, I am not a huge fan of love triangles. The plot involves some time travel, some apocalyptic themes, some fantasy elements, and cult elements. It’s a unique blend of themes that I enjoyed. I thought it was an interesting plot and a well done world. I am curious to see how everything plays out. The major question is how can you change the past to change the future without messing up everything?Overall this was a decent read. I liked the story and the world but wasn’t too keen on the characters. The short chapters combined with the multiple viewpoints broke up the story some and made it hard to engage with the characters. However, I am interested enough in this world that I will probably read the second book (I already have a copy for review). The book is a unique blend of genres that is intriguing. I would recommend if you like stories about dragons or time travel.

16 year old Trinity Foxx has NO idea that she is the Fire Kissed. Nor does she have any idea, when her grandfather uses the money she gave him from the sale of her mother's ring, that the egg he purchases will change her life. She's furious and about to meet two absolutely charming brothers, Connor and Caleb, from the future, one who wants to worship her, and one who wants to kill her, if he thinks it's necessary. She eventually convinces herself that she isn't losing her mind like her mother, and that she has an important role to play in the future of her dragon, Emmy.

Dragons!Ok so not only do we get some awesome dragons, but they are in the contemporary world how cool is that? Not many books featuring dragons set them in a futuristic or contemporary time, but this one did and it was made so much better because we get to see a dragon with a personality. Instead of just this fire breathing monster we get something with feelings, dreams, emotions. and I fell absolutely in love with her!Trinity has had a hard life. She once believed in fairy tales and happily ever after, but a life of foster homes and broken promises has cleared those dreams right up. How was she to know that she would very soon be the new caretaker of one of the greatest fantasies of all, a real live dragon. I really liked how she handled herself and that even when things got tough she could always find humor in an otherwise messy situation. I also liked that she didn't just go along with whatever everyone else told her to do. She made up her own mind and did what it took to survive. One of my favorite quotes by her was:"Please, this Princess can save herself." The Dragon who comes to be called Emmy was my absolute favorite part. She had a sense of humor and was extremely loyal. She is the kind of Dragon I would love to meet.We also have two twins Connor and Caleb who really steal your heart away! They both are fighting on different sides, but they are both equally noble and brave. I admired them for their determination and that they were willing to fight for what they believed was right even if others didn't exactly see it their way. Caleb was definitely the charmer out of the two, but he did have his stubborn moments. Even though there was no real pairing in this book I am personally hoping there will be something more between him and Trinity in the next book!Fall in love with dragons in Scorched by Mari Mancusi!

Ok I hate lizards, snakes, frogs etc. But for some reason I am fascinated by Dragons. I loved "Scorched" and can't wait for the next in the series. While readers of "Eragon" will like this book, it is actually not very similar. This is present day with time travelers from the future trying to both destroy and save the last Dragon. There is quite a bit of young love that you would expect from a young adult novel but plenty of action and intrigue to keep the book moving. It's not due out until Sept.
