About this audiobook
And sure enough, ex-military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter-a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right-and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.
Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning-and then beat him shot for shot.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was the first Jack Reacher book I've read, but it won't be my last. I found "One Shot" to be an easy read, a good crime-thriller and a fast-paced page turner. Although not high literature, it was certainly entertaining and had me hooked from the start. I liked Jack Reacher. He wasn't perfect, but he was tough and smart with a touch of vulnerability, and I enjoyed following his systematic destruction of the DA's foolproof case. I can honestly say that I am now a Jack Reacher fan, and am off to find another of his books.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Film was pretty close if a little more full of explosions, lol. The book ending was much more realistic and as I'd forgotten the film I'd also forgotten who the government bad person was. I really thought it was the one that turned out to not be...
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great Reacher novel. I hear that Tom Cruise is trying to get the part in the movie. He would completely suck as Reacher. Hope it doesn't happen.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5irresistible
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not his best
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5my first reacher book ever! instantly hooked. was an audiobook. thanks also to the great reader voice.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Another excellent Reacher. Boy, I love his books. As usual, IMHO, the emphasis isn't on the violence, which complements the story, Reacher is a self-confessed brawler, but complements it. This story definitely has a twist in it but it isn't a surprise ending but the premise and the assumptions of the event/crime change dramatically about a half to two thirds in. Unusually, the locals and their 'culture', it's set in Indiana, aren't an integral part of the story as often is with Child's books. If you like Reacher this is one of his best.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5great read
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely incredible!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Solid thriller for holiday reading.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I like some of the books in the Jack Reacher series more than others and this is one I liked more. Pretty fun stuff.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Reacher comes to town, helps, busts the bad guys, gets the girl. There are lots of twists and turns along the way.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another enjoyable Lee Child Rack Reacher novel. While the tone is the usual for a Jack Reacher novel, the storytelling is a bit different, and I have to say I do love how Child paces the plot, allowing the reader to leisurely watch our hero Reacher go about solving the case.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not only does Reacher help friends in trouble, he also helps those who weren't friends. In this case in is in Indiana, which seems to be over run with Russian thugs. Everyone seems prepared to help, no matter how long they have known each other or the consequences. As usual, the dialogue is short and crisp, no words wasted. Some characters a bit over the top, but its fiction. No really big surprises.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The basis of a Tom Cruise film, in this novel a sniper takes out six people in the center of a small, unnamed Indiana city. Hospitalized after an attack at the city jail, the suspect in the open-and-shut case asks that the cops get Jack Reacher. An unlikely request because Reacher promised to settle up if he repeated a similar event years ago in the Middle East, getting off by accident. Those who have seen the movie should not be put off by that....this is substantially different from the movie script due to the need to consolidate and simplify. You'll still find it an entertaining and exciting read. And it might wet your taste for more Jack Reacher novels...it did for me.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5One of the better reacher stories. I can see why they used this one for the movie (although the movie changed some stuff)
Recommended. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another great story. Exciting, and I finished it far too soon.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Another excellent book in the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child. The movie, Reacher is based on this book. Reacher helps an ex military sniper from mass murder.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Jack Reacher is a little too harsh and a bit unbelievable (this is the first Lee Child book I have read)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5One of things I really like about this series is that I don't have to read them in order. Once again, the mystery was really good. There were a couple of loose ends that did not seem to get wrapped up, but that's minor - the point is to be entertained, and that I was. I get puzzled sometimes by the connections I make before Reacher does, and the connections that Reacher makes that no human should be able to, but I suppose all that is needed to make the stories work. I'll be back to him again after a few other books.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I didn't realize until I came on GoodReads to register the title as "Currently Reading" that the title was not only a series about Jack Reacher but number 9. I was hooked from page 1. The author has a literary finesse all his own. What every alleged criminal wishes to say, "They got the wrong guy." "They got the wrong guy," he says again. And later in the same conversation, "Get Jack Reacher for me". As a newbie to the series, one assumes there is a relationship of long standing. What transpires next is for all future readers to learn.
In reading a little of the background of the author Lee Child it seems very easy to to understand his success. Child has molded his writing from the wealth of his experiences from law school attendance to years as a British television presentation director to the influences in his writing by authors John D. MacDonald and Alistair MacLean. The successful outcome is a writing style and character in Jack Reacher that one can't help but want to spend time and read now and then again.
Each time I opened and closed the book (due to the edition I read), I found it difficult to imagine Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher in the movie. I borrowed the movie and forced myself to finish watching it in two sittings. Unfortunately the portrayal was as terrible as anticipated. Tom Cruise doesn't have the depth as an actor to do this character justice. It just cements my personal practice. Read the book first and if you really liked the book, skip the movie. So not worth your time. You could be delightfully reading! - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The premise: A sniper shoots five people in a plaza in Indianapolis. A veritable mountain of forensic evidence leads to the summary arrest of James Barr. Reacher knows him. He once investigated a similar sniper killing Barr had perpetrated while a soldier in Kuwait City. For various reasons, the matter was shoved under the carpet by the Army. Reacher had vowed to put Barr six feet under if he ever killed again.
There's just one hitch: is Barr as guilty as he seems?
I suppose this wouldn't be a proper Reacher book if at some point Reacher didn't come under suspicion for a murder or two. It is the sine qua non of the series. The authorities have it half right. Reacher is a stone cold killer. But he just kills the bad guys. Does he ever!
Child does a great job here with a story that involves a lot of forensic evidence without ever becoming dry. He does his job in that he makes you, the reader, feel smart, because you'll find yourself asking all the right questions before Reacher gets there. A very good entry in the series, but still not as good as "Echo Burning". - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Enjoyable chewing gum formthe mind if you like action hero thrillers.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is my third Jack Reacher book and wanted to read this one because they are making a movie out of this one. Unfortunately, Tom Cruise is playing a 6'5" Reacher so I'm not sure it will work. There's a mass shooting from a parking garage overlooking a plaza and the police have arrested a man who's only words are "Get Jack Reacher." Reacher happens to see the news story on CNN not realizing that the police are looking for him and heads to the DA to tell him about the man's history in the military. He intended to help the prosecution but it doesn't turn out the way he expected.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5My wife has been raving about Lee Child for some time. I finally decided to give him a try. Excellent read. Now I am sorry I took all of the other Child books we had to our local swap shop. Fortunately I found another on a recent visit so I am set, at least for a while.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another great Jack Reacher book! I love this character and these books. This is the third one that I read right in a row and all of them are great reads. Again, I couldnt put the book down and got through it in less than a week, even though I am pretty busy! The one thing I love about the character the most is that he is ruthless. He isnt one of those silly guys who wants to leave everyone alive and turn them into the police, he just takes care of business!! Great books!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I started this because everyone was recommending Lee Child to me and they are going to make a movie out of this one... I'm hooked!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This books starts with the random shooting of five people in the street. The attack is very well described, the kind of scene that you remember from a book. The work of a sniper? Yes, the police gets a suspect within hours, but the man - a vet who might have post traumatic stress disorder- says he is innocent against all proofs: his car, his gun. He calls for Lee Child's hero, Jack Reacher. Here is where the book becomes extremely good. You expect that Reacher is his friend and will prove that he is innocent. In fact, Reacher is not his friend, far from it. There are well developed characters like the sister of the accused, a TV journalist, a young lawyer. An excellent thriller.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This Jack Reacher novel is one of Lee Child's best ~ yet all of his books with this great character are top-notch thrillers. Jack Reacher, an ex-military cop, now a drifter with a dark side, somehow manages to walk into trouble wherever he goes. This time a man he knows from 14 years ago, who has murdered before, is accused of randomly shooting five people as they are leaving work on a Friday afternoon. But could there possibly be another person responsible for this seemingly cut-and-dried case? Despite all the evidence that is piling up, building a strong case against James Barr, Jack Reacher begins to investigate and piece the puzzle together, with the help of a lawyer, a journalist, an ex-Marine, and several others who seek the truth.I found this book to be so riveting, I could not put it down and finished it in record time. I highly recommend this (and any) of the Jack Reacher novels ~ Lee Child is superb! A smooth read, a suspenseful plot, murder, romance, thrills and chills.....this one has it all!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5If you aren't familiar with Lee Child's books, as I wasn't, you should know that his stories involve Jack Reacher, a former army officer who went to Westpoint, a big man who now, apparently, doesn't own a home, a car, a cell phone, anything. Heck, he even buys clothes, wears them until they're dirty, then gets rid of them. He's a hard man to find, and he travels light. But Jack Reacher is our hero.In ONE SHOT Reacher comes to Indiana when he learns that a former soldier he knew in the army is accused of the mass murder of five people there who were leaving a DMV building. He finds out that all is not as simple as that, though, and he stays longer than he intended. (By the way, he wears the same $45 pants and shirt throughout the book.)I had always avoided Lee Child's books just because I assumed they were cheap fiction, the kind I see dozens of at used book sales. So ONE SHOT was my first because I was curious and because I got the book for free. Now I think I'll buy more. I enjoyed ONE SHOT. It's not literature, but it's a fine, well-written thriller. I'll be picking up his novels when I see them in the future.
