      In Bully, we have a story of the true fine line between love and hate, and that not everything is as it seems. Tate and Jared were once best friends when they were young. Lived next door to each other, and did just about everything together. But when they were fourteen years old, Jared left for the summer to spend it with his father and came back with hatred in his eyes for Tate. Tate could never understand what she ever did to Jared. For three years she has struggled to understand where his anger has come from. Tate has had to deal with his taunts, his bulliness, and his pranks on her. But then she leaves for France for a year, and comes back a new woman. Now in her senior year of high school, Tate refuses to be the shy reserved girl she used to be and let Jared walk and hurt her again. She stands on her own and surprises him with a new confidence and fighting attitude. Tate comes into herself even though Jared seems determined to ruin her. But as she stands up to him more and more, little things don’t add up about him. She senses something more than the usual hate she used to always get from him. She sees little moments of the real Jared she used to know and love and she will do everything in her power to get to the truth no matter what!Now Bully, was a story I probably should have read first. Since reading books 2 and 3, I knew I needed to read Bully before reading the last book in the series “Aflame”. But I also knew from what the later books hinted at, that it wouldn’t be an easy read and boy was it a tough one full of angst and conflict. These two really go at it. I really felt for Tate in this book….she was the center of it and I loved her pizazz. She really fights back against Jared and I wanted to cheer at some of the pranks she actually pulls at him because he deserves it. I knew a bit of Jared’s history so I kneew that he had a tough history. But there were times I just couldn’t understand how he could take out his anger and pain on the only person that ever had his back. Tate was amazing though, despite the way Jared has treated her, he never broke her. He only made her stronger and I liked that even when it seems tough, she offers forgiveness…Eventually. Most of the book is some pretty crazy stuff before Jared actually gets real with Tate. So that aspect wasn’t my favorite part of the story, but Douglas handles these issues so well and in such a realistic point of view I wanted to cheer. The only character I couldn’t like was K.C. Now she is the heroine of the third book. But quite frankly, I did NOT like her in this one. I understand why Penelope wrote her in this way, but seriously, I wanted to throw her in the lake and shake some common sense into her. Tate was way too forgiving when it came to her in my book. But there were many moments in this story that I loved, and once Jared started letting Tate it—that is when it got really good. Now technically this is a YA romance but to be frank it didn’t feel like it. It had a more NA feel to the story and the sexual content is way more heated than YA is anyway. But boy loved these two together and I can’t wait for more.

      I fist stumbled upon this book through my local library app. The cover looked sweet, and the description pulled me in. I found myself entrapped from the beginning with the need to know what happened between these two for this hate to have grown and festered. This book was an emotional whirlwind but damn was it good.

      Tate has no idea why Jared hates her so much when they used to be best friends. This book follows Tate learning to stand up for herself, and stop being bullied by the boy who lives next door. There is great character development throughout this book and it’s amazing to see how Tate is figuring herself out while working through the situation that has caused her years of heartache. There is a lot of emotional tension throughout the entire book, and it builds on the sexual tension forming between these characters.

      I do have to give this book 4 stars. It was right on the precipice of being 5 stars, but I did have a hard time with some of the repetition of ‘oh he hates me what am I supposed to do...’ Although Tate does find her backbone to stand up for herself, I feel she could’ve done more in some of the situations than she did. I loved the underlining tension throughout the book, keeps you on edge emotionally. The ending comes together, but again I feel it just missed the mark with a WOW factor for me. It was good, but it also could’ve been spectacular. Overall I’m still super pleased with the book and can’t wait to read more from Penelope.

      She judges her friend for getting back with her ex after he cheated on her but she didn’t hear an apology from the same friend for hooking up with her bully knowing damn well he bullied her so bad. Expected more but of course they’re only teenagers and haven’t matured to discuss this topic.

      I had to think hard to find a likable character in this book, besides Tate’s dad and grandma. The only one who I can think of is Ben. Jared is unforgivably cruel and Tate is inexcusably violent.

      I can’t even say that the sex was hot considering it was between two HS students (granted, both were conveniently 18).

      Of course, all of the parents are absentee. So it feels like this is sort of a referendum on parenting and what can happen if you don’t pay enough attention to your kids.

      I love enemies to “friends” to lovers. It’s my trope of choice. That being said, I found it hard to find redeeming qualities in Jared enough to condone the relationship or how quickly it progressed. I don’t really love the I’m-abused-so-I-must-become-an-abuser-to-cope narrative. I felt like all the friends were very shitty friends and that our heroine deserved better. The adults in this story are all completely useless individuals and should not be responsible for human life (don’t leave your child home alone for months at a time). My last grump was that a lot of it felt like it might be a wattpad story? I love a good fanfic but it seemed like an editor would have helped a lot.

      Grumbles out of the way: I loved the pacing of the story. I finished it in one night so it’s addictive enough to not close out of. I liked the main character in that she is a little rough around the edges and has a vindictive streak. The spicy scenes were good and spicy. I was mildly interested in cars which I never am. I love the concept of devoted and looking out for the enemy friend lover even when you’re not friendly but the violence was extreme for my taste.

      I think if we spent a little more time with the in between forgiveness period and some extra time getting to know your enemy friend lover I’d have bumped the rating up a star. A major redeeming factor that I need to sit on is that the author very clearly shows through the characters that 1) these kids have terrible coping skills 2) they overreact in very unhealthy ways.

      Overall, I’d have read it again and I do feel satisfied at the end of the story.

      ALmost gets on the abused shelf because Jared is such a dick. Didn't really feel like that got quite resolved for me but the next book is his side of the story, so maybe that'll help me understand. Not super into New Adult books but still, enjoyed the angst a lot!!!

      This is my second Penelope Douglas read, and I am just underwhelmed. I do not know if this is due to the raving around her books when it comes to romance books in the book world. I went into this expecting something amazing, but I was left feeling disappointed. It was good, but nothing that blew me away. I own a few more of her books, and will continue to give her a try. I may grab for one that has not been so hyped up next to see if I like it more.

      4.9999 stars, almost 5 stars. I really sunk my teeth into the angsty, mean spirited, cold blooded pettiness involved in this story! I felt the need to comment almost constantly during the end. Really well thought out! I only wished she could have been sharper on his reasons for targeting Tate. I mean I get it but I wanted it all to snap into place a little more. Otherwise, well done! I'm a fan of Penelope Douglas now.

      Thankfully a HEA and not a cliffhanger!!! A good book -- one that you hold onto for a future reread. A four-star rating is ever so slightly generous -- definitely better than a three-star, and definitely good tension, good plot, good resolution, good character development and leaves you wanting just a bit more of the rest of the story. Looking forward to reading the companion -- Until You.

      I decided to review Bully and Until You together because they are basically the same story, just told from different POVs. Bully is told through Tate’s eyes, while Until You gives us Jared’s. There’s a lot of repetition between books (for obvious reasons), but there’s also details we missed out on.Bully was soul crushing. Tate is back from a year abroad and the bullying her former best friend Jared dishes out towards her is getting worse. Before she left, Tate decided enough was enough and started standing up for herself. This fuels Jared’s desire to make her cry. It’s obvious how much Jared despises her, but like Tate, we’re left in the dark about why for quite some time. When the reason is revealed, I did not think Jared was at all justified, but you can’t help but feel for him. Eventually he starts worming his way into Tate’s heart (and mine), and proves he’s dedicated to righting his wrongs.After reading Bully, I felt some compassion for Jared. While I’ll never believe bullying is ok, I was willing to give Jared a second chance like Tate. He came off as remorseful and his birthday gift was definitely a winning move. I truly believed he was redeemed.When I saw Until You was in Jared’s POV, I wanted to gobble it up to see if I could like Jared a bit more, but my Lord was I disappointed. By the time I finished reading Until You, I hated Jared. Maybe we didn’t need the insight into his mind. He was fueled by such irrational hatred, it was ridiculous. I understand that it showcases how real bullying can come to be, but in a fictional ‘romance’, it just killed any positive feelings towards Jared. The only real positive I felt towards the book was seeing that Tate’s best friend wasn’t the unfeeling brat she came off as in Bully.I do feel Ms. Douglas does know how to weave a strong story, her writing is hypnotizing. She was able to pull strong emotions out of me (and many readers). I am planning on reading the next book, Rival, when it comes Aug. 26. I enjoyed Madoc’s antics to get Jared to pull his head out of his butt when it came to Tate, so I’m hoping his book will be more enjoyable.

      This book was about two best friends, Tatum and Jared. They we're pretty much inseparable. Then one day, Jared went away to spend time with his father. When he came back, he wasn't the same as before. He bullied Tatum. Why? She didn't know. Then, she left for France. When she came back, she's ready to fight. When he pushes, she pushes back.


      I didn't like Jared at first though. Gosh, sometimes I thought how could Tatum even liked him after all of the things that he's done. He was absolutely horrible. Okay. He was hot so what? One would thought that you have to be some kind of a masochist to put up with everything that he did. But then we see the reason behind his wrongdoings. I know that everything that happened to him doesn't justify his actions but one thing is certain. Bullying is never a good news. And those bullies, they we're also hurt before and they want others to experience what had transpired with them.

      I don't know what to feel about Tatum's bestfriend, K.C. She's obviously a failure in the friendship department. I really hate it when friends act like the way she did.

      And Madoc. "They bumped with each other?" Seriously?!?! That got me cracking up. I know that he's a good guy. And there's going to be a book about him!! I will definitely be reading that as soon as I can.

      I don't really know where to start on this one.

      I was shocked at how far Jared bullied Tate.

      Tate and Jared were the best of best friends. Doing everything together. Until one summer when Jared goes away, when he comes back he is cold and distant. That year they enter high school and that is when it started happening. Jared was horrible, the things he said about Tate, the way he humiliated her.

      I am glad she started fighting back though. I just think it took too long. Granted I understand for the storyline and time it had to happen the way it did. But girl should of grown a backbone sooner.

      Jared is just a stupid boy for handling how he felt the way he did. I wasn't shocked by the love story, I mean I went in to the book knowing it was going to happen obviously. An once they were together, they were on fire! So of course something has to go and screw that up! But WOW was I shocked when the shit hit the fan! I was not expecting something so extreme! I feel like so much happened in such a short amount of time though. But it was a great story.
