Mary Kay Andrews’ “Save the Date” is a breezy rom-com that manages to avoid most of the worst clichés in presenting its tale of the spunky florist-shop owner trying to keep her head above water while beset by a neglectful landlord, a series of Bridezillas and their equally formidable mothers, and a big-city competitor trying to muscle her out of the business. There is, of course, a hunky hero, who’s a really nice guy even if he is a bit tone-deaf to what the heroine needs (beyond the obligatory bedroom romp). And Andrews doubles down on the cute-dog factor, giving each of her protagonists one. This time, there’s actually a plot-related reason for all floppy-eared characters.Andrews has, fortunately, abandoned the “he-done-me-wrong-and-we’re-going-to-get-revenge” motif used in many of her earlier books, while keeping her quirky heroine sassy and funny. Fans of Andrews’ breezy romances will find nothing lacking in this one.

Definitely chick lit--not something I knew when I picked the book. Maybe I should have suspected. WARNING--POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD. READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION:I didn't like that Cara had her business "on a shoestring"--while I understand that unexpected repairs come up, she just seemed to have so many--I wondered why she stayed in her location since her landlords weren't very responsive to requests for repairs. (Not that the landlords should be responsible for her flower cooler or her van, but definitely the air conditioning and the leaking roof are the landlord's responsibility. At first I liked the interplay between Cara and Bert but after a while it got old. I was glad they reconciled again at the end.I liked the dogs--Poppy and Shaz--though they both have their doggie quirks.I liked Cara and John together--up until they decided to sleep together--and at that time, I would consider their relationship undefined. I also didn't like that both their exes still came around thinking that the respective relationships were still "on".

SAVE THE DATE by Mary Kay AndrewsOne of the best writers in the “women’s romantic fiction” has written another winner. Floral designer Cara has a morning full of disasters including a supposed dognapping, and then discovers an archrival is opening a competing store in her small town. Interesting characters, a quickly moving and believable plot keep the action rollicking on. You will guess the ending long before you get there, but you will enjoy the book anyway.4 of 5 stars

There is quite a bit of detail in this book about being a florist. I enjoyed reading about Cara's struggle with her business. I thought it was pretty accurate as far as the financial difficulties of owning your own business, trying to please the clients, dealing with landlords, employees, and creditors. I would have liked to read about different clients besides just brides. I have never lived in Savannah, so I do not know if some of her southern women were too stereotypical.

I really liked the character of Jack. Cara on the other hand was annoying at times. I was quite a angry with Cara when she did not see that Jack's intentions were genuine, while at the same time she was too trusting of another man in her life. Cara was often rather whiney, self absorbed and full of herself. Yet aren't we all at times. Overall, I liked the story because it kept me interested and it was an easy read. I would even like to see a second book with these characters.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Mary Kay Andrews, but this book fell short. The main character, Cara Kryzik, labors under the strains of Hercules. No woman has had so many pitfalls as Cara that trouble should be her middle name. Also, Cara cannot accept the Golden Fleece thrown at her feet. The characters seem to flitter back and forth in their roles as sometimes good and sometimes bad, that no character remains with outstanding traits. Money seems to grow on trees according to the behavior of both Cara and Jack, but yet, Cara is always bemoaning the fact that she owes her father a small fortune. People from other Mary Kay Andrews' books are quickly mentioned as potential customers for Cara's floral business. Luckily, the book ends with Cara’s marriage.

This is the story of Cara, a florist, in Savannah. She's a Northerner so she's had to work at getting clients. But Cars isn't just a florist she does many of the duties of a wedding planner s well. Her ideas a creative and she truly cares about her clients. But she's gone through a divorce so she's a little down on the opposite sex, okay, she hates men. Which is bad news since she's just met someone who could be the one.

I think Mary Kay Andrews is at her best when she's describing the people and settings, you can see she has a love of the South and yet doesn't sugar coat the idiosyncrasies. I gave the book four stars and that's probably more my issue than because of the story itself. I was so looking forward to laughing-out-loud as I have in past books by Ms. Andrews and I did find that laugh-out-loud humor was missing, but that doesn't mean I didn't think the book wasn't well written just different than I anticipated.

Once again I'm all caught up on reading Mary Kay Andrews books and so sad that it will be awhile before she puts another one out. I love books set in the South, it makes for a peaceful read no matter where you live, and even better when there is over 2 feet of snow on the ground! This book had all the trappings of the gorgeous weddings that went on and the description of the flowers and food and its plot of characters were great! The refurbishing of the barn in the story, the detail, just made the book too interesting to put down

Save The Date by Mary Kay AndrewsLike the authors other works and know I will enjoy this one also.Starts out with the florist that mainly handles weddings, Kara waking up and in her shop she's discovered everything is fine, as it should be.The wedding to go off tomorrow, the mother of the bride wants a different color for the candles, at this late date...The cooler, no longer working, has destroyed all the flower arrangements for the next day...her father wants her monthly payment for the loan he took out, which he's not received in many months....the dog runs out of the building...We learn that her ex husband is back in the area....unhanded competitor florist troubles...Story also follows the grooms brother, Jack and his past life with his wife, and his now carpenter jobs, who also owns a dog just like Kara's. Kara attempts to be a wedding planner, coordinating everything, to get out of debt...She helps him get work and she takes on being a wedding planner-all of the details, NOT just the flowers. Steamy sex scenes. His ex wife is also back in the area. Love the travel, the wild ponies that I hope to see one day for myself and all the details of a big wedding, one I didn't have.Love how they do things for one another and how it's appreciated...I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Mary Kay Andrews, is the Queen of the South, with her humor, mischief, and creative characters. Having read all her books, SAVE THE DATE took on a new twist into the world of weddings, flowers, and of course-- all the drama and chaos, which comes along with events, brides, and their crazy mothers, and families—all with an opinion.

As emotions run high—Mary Kay incorporates all the social media with Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter—as Cara, the owner of a small florist shop in Savannah, GA, faces all sorts of problems and challenges. Number one her ruthless gay competitor (even trying to steal her assistant).

Cara, not only unlucky in love, with her most recent divorce, she buys a dog name Poppy to keep her company, and is in debt to her demanding father who is threatening to call in her loan for her business. There are so many unexpected problems, she is having a hard time staying afloat.

Her assistant, Bert, becomes romantically involved with the competition, causing more problems for Cara. Then she meets a good-looking guy who steals her dog by mistake, a hot apartment and shop with a dead landlord, and plenty of nasty clients.

You can expect tidbits of design, and renovations, as the new guy is a pro with renovations of all sorts, helping her with the barns and other venues, as talented Cara pulls off the best weddings in town! Full of drama and humor, a predictable, light and easy beach read. Was not wild about the audiobook narrator, Kathleen McInerney--an influencer, when rating.

My summer reading list would not be complete without the latest book from Mary Kay Andrews. Save the Date is another wonderfully warm, funny, romantic read that's a must for your beach bag. Andrews populates her books with lovable, quirky characters that you wish you could actually count among your friends. In Save the Date, we meet Cara Kryzik, a florist trying to make a go of her fledgling business in Savannah. She lands one big society wedding that could make or break her reputation - and her bank account. Can she pull it off? Or will fate conspire against her? Her landlord wants to sell her building, her loan is being called in and her trusted assistant is acting funny. Then a well known 'society' florist opens a shop in Savannah, determined to put Cara out of business..... And what about that builder that 'kidnapped' her dog? And why is he at every wedding she's working? I was captured from first page to last. All the elements are there - a main character you can't help but cheer for, a hunky guy, that will they, they won't they romantic storyline, an eclectic supporting cast and an antagonist you can't help but dislike! All of it is wrapped up in distinctly enjoyable dialogue and situations, making Save the Date a sweet, easy, breezy read. I really enjoyed some of the wedding ideas and descriptions and learned quite a bit about flowers as well. Andrews's books are set in the South, where she herself makes her home. Her descriptions of time and place make me want to visit the settings.(Or in the case of Tybee Island - move there) My usual fare is mysteries and thrillers, but I enjoy a good 'chick lit' book. Andrews always fills the bill - and for this reader, Save the Date was a really good read.

Cara Kryzik is determined to make her boutique flower shop a success, and she is going to do it on her own. No more borrowing money from her dad or accepting help from anyone. It’s the wedding season and business and business is good. What could possibly go wrong? As it turns out, quite a bit. Financial troubles, difficult brides, a missing puppy, a previously reliable assistant that’s now slacking off and another florist trying to ruin her reputation and her business.Set in Savannah, the book oozes southern charm. Vivid descriptions, colorful characters and snappy dialog keep the plot zipping along. Even the Goldendoodle puppies have engaging personalities. There are a multitude of subplots and crises to keep the reader turning the pages. This was an easy read that was charming and captivating; not always realistic, but this is a book you read for fun and entertainment. I cheered for underdog Cara and wanted her to have that happy ending. A perfect summer read: Weddings, flowers, and romance with a too-good-to-be-true guy.

With humor and spunk this story is woven into so many aspect of the human spirit, from love, to family, to crazy life circumstances, to drama on many levels, to how life can be funny and amazing. When you mix this all up you have yourself an amazing story and when you add in wonderful characters what you have now is a brilliant read, which is perfect for summer and book clubs, 5 stars!

When I received Mary Kay Andrews’ novel, Save the Date, as a Goodreads first read giveaway book, I was a bit apprehensive about the lengthy text (all 500 pages). But because Andrews deftly portrays the characters of the story with such wit and charm, I found myself being transported to the South and was intrigued to learn about wedding dramas, as well as the nuances of the floral industry. I was quite entranced by Cara Kryzik, the owner of an upcoming Savannah florist, who was struggling to survive in a competitive new business. When her floral business seemed to be slipping out of her hands, when she was losing her storefront, when she turned away from her man, I felt myself rooting for her all the way. Although this story wasn’t exactly a riveting page-turner, I did think that it was a very entertaining and worthy beach read. And then, too, because I’m a dog-lover, the author captured my attention right at the start when Cara scoured the neighborhood looking for her missing golden doodle that had escaped out the door. My only critical comment might be that the story kind of droned on toward the end and could have been finalized a little sooner. Nevertheless, I enjoyed Save the Date , and could almost smell the fragrant bridal bouquets that were such a part of this lovely novel.

This is going to be one of the popular beach reads of the summer. Its a fun read about Cara, a florist in Savannah, Georgia who is on the brink of becoming a success as the 'in' florist for the society weddings in town. She has a father and an ex-husband who make her doubt her abilities and cause her not trust men. She also has a cute puppy who plays a very important role in the novel. The book is fun to read and even though some of the brides and mothers are over the top, they are probably not too far from reality. The novel is a story of Cara learning to love herself and trust her abilities and learning to love again. Its a perfect summer read! Loved it!
