About this audiobook

When librarian Kathleen Paulson moved to Mayville Heights, Minnesota, she had no idea that two strays would nuzzle their way into her life. Owen is a tabby with a catnip addiction and Hercules is a stocky tuxedo cat who shares Kathleen's fondness for Barry Manilow. But beyond all the fur and purrs, there's something more to these felines.

When murder interrupts Mayville's Music Festival, Kathleen finds herself the prime suspect. More stunning is her realization that Owen and Hercules are magical-and she's relying on their skills to solve a purr-fect murder.

Enjoyable cozy mystery about a librarian and her magical cats. It's what I call a " clear the palate" story after reading heavier tomes. Pure fun! I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Kathleen Paulson has left Boston to accept a position as head librarian at the Mayville Heights, Minnesota library. She's also overseeing the renovation of said library, and that's not without its problems. On this morning Kathleen hears a commotion in the library and goes to check it out, only to find one of her employees trying to explain to Gregor Easton, a visiting conductor, that the library is under renovation and the Internet is not yet connected. Easton, however, is having none of it. Since he was informed they did indeed have Internet, he wants to use it, and can't seem to understand that even if computers are available, the Internet might not be (not very tech savvy at all?).But someone doesn't like the arguing - Owen, one of Kathleen's two cats, suddenly appears on Easton's head, and what follows is disaster. After Easton is calmed down, Kathleen offers to have breakfast sent to his hotel room the next morning by way of apology. Mollified, Easton leaves. Kathleen, though, has no idea how Owen got into the library in the first place. The next morning Kathleen needs to find Oren, a local handyman, and she thinks he might be at the theater working, so heads over there. But Oren's truck isn't in the parking lot, and even so, she enters the theater but instead finds Easton, slumped over the piano - dead. After calling the police and answering questions, she returns to the library. Then things start getting strange. The lead detective, Marcus Gordon, is questioning her and she thinks that she's probably the prime suspect, even though she only met Easton one time and managed to find his body. Her work crew at the library arrives sporadically; accidents keep happening to her that manage to cause minor injuries; and her cats - Owen and Hercules - well, that's a story: She found them as kittens on the grounds of Wisteria Hill, the abandoned estate of her employer, Everett Henderson. They followed her home and she adopted them. But she's now noticing that they have very special magical powers.Kathleen realizes that in order to get herself out of hot water with the police, she'll need to figure out who had the best motive to kill Easton. Unfortunately, it could be any one of her friends, and while she doesn't want to believe it, she knows that someone out there is framing her for a murder she didn't commit...This is the first book in the series, and I thought it was a very good beginning indeed. Our protagonist has her hands full with library renovations when Easton shows up, and when he's killed she suddenly moves to the top of the list as a person of interest. But since she had no reason to kill him, she figures out that someone in town knew things she'd said to Easton and used them to draw him to a death trap.I thought the book was written well, although I also thought it was a little heavy on non-essential things to the plot. We really don't need to know about her Tai Chi class, nothing happens there that makes a whit of difference, and it certainly didn't matter to me. Yes, it introduced other characters, but they could have been introduced at a cafe or the library just as well. It bogged down the tale a tad.The only other thing that bothered me is when one character tells Kathleen that she "wouldn't understand because she's from away." This is not a phrase they use in Minnesota (I know because I grew up there). When someone moves to town, we don't say they're 'from away.' That's strictly an east coast phrase (and since the author is from the east coast, I would have expected her to know this). Minor, but it bothered me, since when someone moves to town we merely say that 'you're new here'. I was also a bit surprised not a single person spoke as if they actually grew up in the state. But hey...Anyway, I absolutely loved Owen and Hercules. They've decided to adopt Kathleen, and they help her in her investigation, and she reacts much as the way anyone would when they find out the truth. They point her in the right direction by bringing her clues, and even act as her protectors when need be. Without them, the story wouldn't be half as interesting as it is.When the ending comes and we discover the murderer it came as rather a surprise, yet I didn't feel that the reason for the murder was enough of one to kill for; but that's my own opinion. There was also another surprise in store, and that was an interesting red herring. Still, the climax was done well and everything was explained in a satisfying manner. All in all, I enjoyed the book and the introduction to Owen and Hercules, and look forward to reading the next in the series. Recommended.

Really cute book. I appreciated the way the cats actually were magical in this book -- it's appropriate for the series title. Also, it's a refreshing change to have real magical cats instead of the special-but-normal cats in the cat mysteries I've been reading lately.

About mid-way through the book, the heroine witnessed her cats being magic and seemed to be in denial; once she got out of that phase, I enjoyed her a lot more. The secondary characters were fun, too. One issue I have is that there seems to be an attempt to force a relationship coming in future books, so I'm not sure I will continue with the series. (Luckily that part didn't start until the very end of this book.) I may try the next one and see how the possible relationship is handled, but it's made me wary of the series.

(I might give 3.5 stars if that was an option, but since it's not I'm choosing to round up.)

I was skeptical about the magic cats portion of this book but it wasn't over the top and they mystery was interesting although not that surprising. I'll try out the next books in the series since I already have them before I can say I enjoy the series.

I love the humor in the two books of this series that I've read--it's not "wacky." Usually I don't like books with magical elements, but the main protagonist in this series reacts to her cats' magical powers the way I think I might react--that they're weird, and no one would believe her if she told the people about them. The cats have very specific powers, and it's interesting to see how they play into the plot. I had a hard time keeping track of all the characters...not all the significant characters were well-drawn.

Kathleen Paulson left her life in Boston behind to be head librarian in Mayville Heights, Minnesota. Shortly after moving she is adopted by two cats who literally follow her home. Owen is a tabby with a catnip addiction and Hercules is a tuxedo cat that shares Kathleen's fondness of Barry Manilow. Small town life is nice and quiet until murder interrupts Mayville's Summer Music Festival and Kathleen suddenly finds herself as one of the main suspects. This was a fun, cat-themed mystery. A light, easy read that was a nice change from what I had been reading lately. The mystery itself is fairly easy to guess after a few clues though Kelly did try to throw in a little twist that made me second guess myself for a chapter or two. The cats' magical abilities were down played. I hope they are developed more in future books.

I thought this was a good start to what could be a very interesting series. I liked that the author allowed the cats to act like cats, even when exhibiting their magical abilities. I like that their mysterious abilities were not yet explained too. The mystery itself was very well done and the end was plausible but not obvious, so that I did not foresee it. There were hints of some very witty, humorous writing, although not enough - perhaps that part of the author's voice will get stronger with subsequent books. I'm really looking forward to the next one.

This is a fun beach read for cat lovers. The cats are not your ordinary cats. I enjoyed the story and loved Owen and Hercules and their antics.

Two cats in a small town “400 miles north of everywhere” with a literary protagonist, no it’s not the newspaper reporter Qwill from the Cat Who series, this is Kathleen the head librarian and her two magical cats.
The two series are really very much alike, with this series being given an edge for a decent mystery, The Cat Who series being better for the number of likable and quirky characters. But a cat fancier who enjoys a cozy mystery should enjoy this novel.

A warm cozy mystery featuring cats. Kathleen Paulson, daughter of actors and librarian extraordinaire, has settled in a small Minnesota town to put down roots. She adopts a pair of cats from a local abandoned house. Life is good. Except those cats have powers. So, Kathleen is also in danger of becoming a “Crazy Cat Lady.” But that is nothing compared to the danger she fonds when she’s suspected of murdering a well-known guest conductor who has shown up for the upcoming music fest. Like most cozy mysteries, this one features wonderful smalltown personalities with unexpected histories. Unlike many recent cozies, these characters are well-done; the plot is not too hokey; and the mystery is entertaining. If you like the genre, I recommend this book. I will continue with the series because this first story is good enough to hold my attention.

Escaping a failed relationship, Kathleen Paulson takes a job as library director at a small town in Minnesota. A couple of cats adopt her, but they have some uncanny abilities. They possibly came from an abandoned home where feral cats live. Both cats (Owen and Hercules) can turn up in places impossible for them to do so, and she finally catches Hercules walking right through the door as if it wasn't there. Kathleen's first task as director is to supervise a library renovation but the contractor is slow and appears to be botching the job and avoiding Kathleen. The local music festival's guest conductor turns up dead, and Kathleen finds him. While she becomes a suspect, it's clear the detective in charge of the case doesn't regard her as a serious suspect for long. This book is fun because of the cats! It's a perfect book for a cat-lover to listen to on a long drive.

Our heroine is a librarian who is new to town and here to help refurbish the library and work as the new head librarian. She has two magnificent cats that she rescued from a abandoned field when they where kittens. They seem to be more that the average cats however. The cats steal the story with their abilities and general cuteness. Owen, one of the cats suffers from a terrible cat nip addiction. it's so cute. : ) She has this bit where she bakes goodies for everyone for almost any reason. (my kind of girl !) Everything is going fairly well, till our librarian finds a body and then the twists and turns delve into the darker side of the town's people. There is and attractive detective, several shifty towns folk, a lie long thought buried.
It was a nice cozy mystery. Low on the violence, language and very low on the smut scale.

Curiosity Thrilled the Cat: A Magical Cats Mystery by Sofie Kelly is a 2011 NAL publication. Cats, libraries and books are a winning trifecta, and they tend to complement each other, especially well when these three elements apply to mystery novels. So, it’s no surprise that there is no shortage of mystery series, especially in the cozy genre, featuring cats, books, and libraries, in one combination or another. I wasn’t sure about this series when it was recommended to me, because, although I love it when pets and animals have a role in a story, I’m not especially fond of the magical or paranormal elements, since, well, it’s just too silly for me. But, in this case, I found the entire story very charming. The mystery is solid, well plotted, with quick pacing, strong dialogue, with a little humor sprinkled in along the way. Hercules and Owen, Kathleen Paulson’s adopted cats, are ‘special’, and they do help Kathleen find clues, in small ways, but I found myself caught up in the spirt of the book, and enjoyed the pure whimsy of it. In fact, the cats are what made the book so utterly charming. Kathleen is a likeable character who is licking her wounds after a bad break up, and adjusting to small town life, as well as her decision to try a super short hairdo, which is driving her nuts. (I can relate!) Her new job as the town’s librarian is fraught with a plethora of issues due to a major renovation, which is not going so well. But, when Kathleen finds the body of a famous, and difficult, musical conductor, things get a whole lot worse when she discovers she is suspect number one. Things get dicey from there as she copes with Marcus, the detective working the case, and a string of ‘accidents’, as well as feeling as though someone doesn’t want the library renovated, for some reason. This first book in a series, sets the stage for future installments, giving it a nice foundation to build on, so overall, this one turned out to be an unexpected pleasure, so I’ll be adding yet another series to my enormous TBR pile. 3.5 stars

All cat owners think their cats are special, but Kathleen Paulson’s cats really are! Leaving behind Boston and her broken heart, Kathleen is making a new life for herself, at work restoring a library in Minnesota. One day while exploring an abandoned house, she discovers that she has two ardent followers – a tabby cat and a tuxedo cat. Now named Owen and Hercules, she is amazed to discover each has a hidden talent. But what really shocks her is her discovery of a dead composer at the theatre. More distressing is that it seems someone is setting Kathleen up to be the fall guy in the murder. With a little help from her friends – the four-footed variety – Kathleen sets out to find the culprit. The first in a series, this cozy of magical cats will charm the socks off you.

In Kelly’s mystery novel, Kathleen Paulson has been transplanted from Boston to Mayville Heights, Minnesota and is now the head librarian of a small community library. Since her arrival, she has supervised the on-going renovations of the library, adopted two mysterious cats, and found herself a person of interest in a murder investigation. The most stunning discovery revolves around the somewhat “magical” tendencies of her cats and their sleuthing to help her solve the murder of a visiting conductor. An exciting new series that is inventive, “magical”, and introduces Kathleen Paulson as a likeable amateur sleuth.

This is the first book in the Magical Cats Mystery and a pretty good start to a new series. Kathleen has a new job in a new town in Minnesota. She also is a suspect in the murder of a visiting conductor. She and her new friends work to figure out who did. The characters are well developed and interesting for the most part. There's a love interest between Kathleen and a detective. The plot moves along with an ending I did not foresee. And the cats were nice -- not as included in the plot as say the Cats and Curios Mystery Series by Rebecca Hale, but then there's the magical part,...hmmm...not my favorite thing but it's a minor point. Overall, good, but not great.

I really enjoyed this first novel in this series by Sofie Kelly. Kathleen Paulson moves to small town Minnesota to become the head librarian at the local Carnegie library, which is undergoing renovations. She adopts two very special cats, Owen and Hercules, from a nearby abandoned estate that houses many feral cats. Accidents during the renovations, a dead body connected to a local music festival and a lot of secondary characters with a name that begins with 'R' caused the book to wander a bit for me, but the mystery was good in the end and well played out. I will definitely read the next one in the series and hope a few of those kinks are smoothed out.

CURIOSITY THRILLED THE CAT was one of those books that you hear about before release day, you get excited about it, buy it on release day and then it sits in your TBR pile. I was so excited when I heard about CURIOSITY THRILLED THE CAT that I raced to the bookstore and bought it. Of course it then spent quite a few months in the ever-growing reading well. Well lately I've had a bit of a reading slump and I was eyeing my shelves and saw it sitting there. I thought I would give it a go. I thought maybe those magical cats might get me out of my reading slump. And, guess what? THEY DID!CURIOSITY THRILLED THE CAT is the first book in the Magical Cats Mystery series and tells the story of a librarian, Kathleen, who has been adopted by two cats, Hercules and Owen (of course its cats that adopt us, not the other way around). Kathleen is working hard at the Mayville Heights Public Library, getting it restored, when suddenly she finds herself in the middle of a murder. Okay so I'm not going to be subtle. I adored every single page of this book. I LOVED Hercules and Owen, and yes by the way Hercules is named after Kevin Sorbo (and if you don't understand this reference you are far too young!). They are full of so much mischief, and remind me of my own cats. I loved their magical, supernatural powers (which I won't spill - you have to read the book to find out!).Adorable cats aside, I fell completely smitten for Mayville Heights. Being the first book in the series, Sofie Kelly, introduces us to a lot of fun, quirky characters in the town. Each time I met a new character I kept thinking "oh don't be the murderer" because I want to read more about these delightful people again and again. As to the murder mystery itself, it was very enjoyable, and nope I didn't guess who did it, although towards the end I did get very close. It wasn't too predictable at all, and I had fun finding out who did it right alongside Kathleen.I've already picked up SLEIGHT OF PAW from the library, and intend to start it very soon.

Librarian Kathleen Paulson finds murder is not only on her bookshelves.*** Author Sofie Kelly mixes librarians, cats, murder, and a hunky single detective in a new “Magical Cats Mystery” series set in the Lake Pepin area of Minnesota. Single newcomer Kathleen Paulson left Boston to lick her wounds after her longtime boyfriend quickly and unexpectedly married somebody else within two weeks of their first real serious disagreement. Her new job is to renovate and update the Mayville Heights’ Carnegie Library. The librarian finds small town gossip means no one has secrets, unless murder is involved. The shock that her two feral cats, Owen and Hercules, like Detective Gordon, is set aside, as she becomes the prime suspect in the murder of well-known composer and conductor Gregor Easton. It didn’t help that her cat Owen jumped on the conductor head when they first met in the library. Hercules appears to have magical powers and just happens to gather items that give Kathleen hints to who really murdered the conductor. There is nothing magical about the accidents at the library, or the murder and infidelity that will lead to a storybook ending, but it is a satisfying beginning to an interesting mystery series.

Delightful. A cozy little mystery replete with libraries, cats, murder, interesting characters, and a subtle touch of magic. A Boston transplant to Minnesota (what is it about cozy mysteries and Minnesota?), Kathleen is overseeing a library renovation that seems snake-bit. Delays, accidents, and incompetence seem to dog the project, and Kathleen is usually catching the short end of the various mishaps. Things get a little more serious when she discovers a dead body with evidence tying it to the library, and finds herself a "person of interest." While the part of the mystery concerning the on-site accidents turned out to be a little lame, I loved the characters and the atmosphere of the story. I especially enjoyed the cats and their "special" abilities. They helped solve the mystery, of course, in such a way that Kathleen can never explain. I truly enjoyed this one and will look for subsequent titles.

Kathleen needs a change in her life so she accepts a job to head the renovation of a public library in small Minnesota town. No sooner does she get there than 2 cats attach themselves to her. Fast forward a few months, as the renovation is lagging behind and the town prepares for it's annual music festival, Kathleen has settled into the town and made many friends. Too bad the same cannot be said for the celebrity guest conductor who is heading the music festival, Gregor Easton. When Easton is murdered, Kathleen has the misfortune of finding his body. Now she is determined to discover who killed him, and she soon has unexpected help.I enjoyed this book but there is a lot going on. It is the first book in the series and those often suffer from information overload. But the characters are so homey and the town is so nice. I know I will read the next in the series. I really need to find out about the mysterious deserted house and the strange attraction Kathleen seem to have to the magical cats that live at that house and with her.

At first I was not sure about the Magical Cats but soon found them delightful. Ms. Kelly has made the characters so that you feel like you know them but still want to learn more about them. Very good start to a new series. I am ready for the next adventure of Kathleen Paulson.
