Author

Al Yankovic

Known for more than thirty years as America's premier satirist of popular music and culture, "Weird Al" Yankovic has had almost as many careers as Billy can dream of. Advised by his father to do whatever made him happy, he has accordingly been a comedian, singer/songwriter, music producer, actor, director, and writer—often all at the same time. Mr. Yankovic has won three Grammy Awards and has sold more comedy recordings than anyone else in history. He lives with his family in Southern California.

I really enjoyed the book “My New Teacher and Me!” The first reason I thought this was an enjoyable book is because of the rhyming pattern. “The first day of school-it was finally here! I wondered who’d be my new teacher this year…” The rhyming pattern keeps the text fast paced and entertaining. In addition, the absurd stories that the main character comes up with in the story are extremely humorous. He talks about digging a hole to China and finding a dinosaur skull, two-headed cows, and his grandfather flying a kite on the moon. These types of stories are very appealing, especially for young children. Lastly, the illustrations are very appropriate to the mood of the story. One illustration that particularly stood out to me was of the grandfather sitting on the moon, flying a kite, with a whole campsite set up. The illustrator uses very bright, fun colors, and includes so much detail and excitement to each illustration which adds to the fun, silly mood of the story. My favorite line from the story was, “I’ll bet every great thinker and leader we’ve got could see all kinds of things other people could not!” The big idea of the book is for children to use creativity and imagination to look at the world differently.

Billy's back and he has a new teacher who learns to embrace a child's imagination and let it grow. There's a great message for parents and kids a like to take away from this and it's delivered in a cute and great way.

I enjoyed reading My New Teacher and Me because of its illustrations and the imagination of the main character. The story is about the first day of school and a teacher’s first impression of a student. He asks why the student’s shirt is dirty and from there the student tells some exotic stories that are unbelievable to the teacher. To explain the dirt the student says, “I was digging to China out in my backyard, and I almost was there when – I hit something hard! Well, I dug, and I dug, and I dug a bit more and discovered the skull of a real dinosaur.” The student goes on to tell exotic stories and the illustrations do a great job of putting you into the imagination of this student. For example, one of the pages shows the two dairy cows with two heads in order to help the reader visualize. The best quote in the story is, “I’ll bet every great think and leader we’ve got could see all kinds of thinks other people could not! So then why get upset if somebody like me tries to look at the world just a bit differently?” I think that this quote sums up the central message that not everyone knows everything and what may seem unimaginable may be true if you give it a chance.

I was so excited to have won this book from LibraryThing through a giveaway from the publisher. "Weird Al" Yankovic is a blast from my 80's past and when I found out I won this book, I was more excited than my kids! Plus, I'm a sucker rhyming books! They are the best kind for children and can draw them in easily with the lyrical rhymes. This book is exactly that way! My girls, ages 2, 6 & 8 all loved it! The book is a fun story with beautiful illustrations that make the story come alive. The message of the story: "I'll bet every great thinker and leader we've got Could see all kinds of things other people could not!(page 27)" is a wonderful message for kids to use creativity and imagination to "look at the world differently." This is nice addition for library at home and I look forward to reading more of Yankovic's books with my children.

Author (Last name first): Yankovic, AlTitle of the Book: My New Teacher and Me!Publisher: Harper and imprint of HarperCollinsDate of Publication:2013ISBN# 978-0-06-219203-5Price:$17.99Grade Level:Primary/LowerElNumber of Pages: 32VOYA Rating: 3Q 3P for ElementaryRecommended Mr. Booth is a new teacher and his room is full of rules. He wants to dive right into fractions on the very first day of school. Billy is excited about the first day of school, but he and Mr. Booth get off on the wrong foot with each other. Mr. Booth does not believe Billy was digging to China and discovered a dinosaur, or that his 3rd cousin has two headed cows, or that his grandfather walked on the moon. Billy is disrupting the class with his stories and Mr. Booth gets increasingly frustrated. Billy won’t admit his stories are absurd because to him they are true…with a few exaggerated details. It seems that Billy is quite the reader and has a big imagination and says “…why get upset if somebody like me tries to look at the world just a bit differently?” Towards the end of the book Mr. Booth begins to doubt himself and becomes more open to possibilities. Billy thinks that he and Mr. Booth will teach each other a lot this school year.I was not aware that Al Yankovic had become a children’s author. So, in my head I was envisioning him reading the book like he sang his satirical songs. I’m sure younger readers will not have this issue. The illustrations match the preposterous stories in the book. Readers could spend hours discovering new things in the illustrations. This book could be used as a read aloud about imagination and being open to possibilities. Children will probably laugh aloud at some of the descriptions. The illustrations are bright and engaging. It might be a little too busy for some readers, but it will be perfect for others. This book would be a good for a “beginning of the year” book display. I think boys would be very attracted to this book. It would be a good purchase for a school library.

Billy is excited to meet his new teacher Mr. Booth - but Mr. Booth isn't too excited to meet Billy. Mr. Booth questions Billy about why the boy is covered in dirt, and Billy launches into an imaginative story about how he was digging in his backyard and found a dinosaur. When Mr. Booth expresses skepticism, Billy's story gets wilder and wilder. Finally, Billy teaches Mr. Booth a lesson that the most inventive people in the world were also the most creative thinkers - they were people who didn't yield to hard-set rules set by color-within-the-line leaders. This is a fun story, with great illustrations, and something to think about. Perfect for little kids. :)
