About this audiobook

Young Savannah Dubrinsky was a mistress of illusion, a world-famous magician capable of mesmerizing millions. But there was one—Gregori, the Dark One—who held her in terrifying thrall. Whose cold silver eyes and heated sensuality sent shivers of danger, of desire, down her spine.

With a dark magic all his own, Gregori—the implacable hunter, the legendary healer, the most powerful of Carpathian males—whispered in Savannah’s mind that he was her destiny. That she had been born to save his immortal soul. And now, here in New Orleans, the hour had finally come to claim her. To make her completely his. In a ritual as old as time . . . and as inescapable as eternity.

SummarySavannah Dubrinsky, is the daughter of Raven and Mikhail, the prince of the Carpathian people. When she learns that Gregori, the infamous “Dark One” is her intented lifemate, known as the boogie man of their people, the most respected and feared of their kind, she knows at eighteen years old she is not ready to tie herself to such a creature. So she pleads for time, five years in the states. Gregori has lived for centuries, one of the oldest of their kind, he knows he will not be a easy mate, so he gives her that time, despite the fact that he isn’t sure he can wait five years for her. Savannah has now had her precious five years, and while on her last stop on her tour in San Francisco, her closest friend is killed by a vampire, and Gregori saves her. She knows that this day would come, but she also knew she would never be ready to be his lifemate. She is overcome with grief over her closest friend, and being tied to a dark and dangerous man, but they decide to head to New Orleans, for the jazz music festival, and soon they will be facing hunters from the human society out to destroy their kind, and a master vampire and only working together will they be able to survive. The HeroGregori “The Dark One” is the healer of his people, and second in command to the prince, who also happens to be his best friend. Gregori has defended his people and protected them and killed vampires left and right. He has studied and learned everything he can to be the most knowledgable and cunning. He has few friends, many enemies, and has searched for his lifemate for centuries. When Mikhail and Raven conceived a girl, he knew she was his lifemate, and he must stay strong for her. She is his only hope. Gregori can be a hard hero to like. He is very rough around the edges, believes women should be protected in a cacoon and away from any and all danger. He is very “alpha male” and he is possessive. But Gregori is also very easy to connect with. As soon as you see the real Gregori, who has lived a life of killing and darkness, we see a man that only wants to be loved and needed. The HeroineSavannah Dubrinsky, she is the daughter of the prince. She has her own special gifts and abilities. She is powerful in her own right despite being a fledging. She grew up with only her parents, and a wolf as her companion. She now resides in the states, doing magic shows and is infamous for it. But Savannah has one fear, her lifemate. She knows that she will have to be binded forever with Gregori, but she fears him more than any other. She knows he will be hard to live with, and she is very independent like her mother. I really liked Savannah, but at times she could have used a bit spine, especially in the beginning. I understand why she feels the way she does, but at times she could be a bit selfish. But what I really liked about her character, was how she stands up to Gregori, and doesn’t back down.Plot and Story LineThis is a re read or “re listen” for me. Every now and then I get in the mood to listen to the earlier books in the carpathian series, since I own them all on audiobook. I realized I had yet to review Dark Magic. So I decided now would be a good time to do so. The first half of the book isn’t always easy to listen to. We see the relationship between Gregori and Savannah have a bit of a rocky start. One of the reasons for this, is that Gregori has waited to long to claim Savannah, and if he doesn’t he will become a vampire. And no one will be able to destroy him. We see how his control is slipping away, and Savannah at first doesn’t realize how bad it truly is. They have a bit of a unsteady beginning with plenty of miscommunication and mistrusts, but then we see a turning point in their relationship. A turning point that makes Gregori despise himself, and Savannah reads his mind and memories, and learns who he really is, and a trust begins to form. We also get a side character that I hope one day gets his own story (Gary). We see him in future books too, which is fun and you see a hint of a story that could happen. There is some quick witted humor that is delightful, and the narrator is amazing. She has done most of the books from book 1 to book 10 I believe apart from Rebecca Cook who has done a couple. But I adore her inflections and I fell in love with her in Dark Challenge, so its always a delight to listen to her again. What I also liked was seeing their relationship develop more and you see a hint of playfulness enter the relationship, and Gregori softens towards Savannah, We see the romance between them really blossom especially once they get to New Orleans. There is some suspense elements as well from two different factors. Now this is a story that will either be you love it or you hate it, I love it because of seeing Gregori in previous books, and even though this isn’t my favorite book of the series, I always have fun with it. But I will warn you in the first part of the story, it is not easy to read, there are some darker elements, but the later half is more playful and light and fun.The CoverThis isn’t my favorite cover for the series. I do like the foggy background, but there is something non realistic about this cover, but I love the colors and the wolves at the bottom.Overall ViewDark Magic is a highly sensual and dark romance at times, but has witty humor, intrigue and danger, a story of redeeming love and passion.

I have waited for some time and long to learn about the wonders and tails of the story — the very details of Gregori in the “Dark Magic” The 'Dark' Carpathian Book 4. The becoming and the finding of his life mate the forging of both individuals’ ups and downs stories unraveling the lovely and dangerous mystical of the dark one. It is time for bringing out all about the very one that holds power, commands, will and ruled, the force of nature, and holding within his hand all the mystics of life and death. Time to learn of the roles played and finding out all about the dark one saving and struggles of the darkness trying to overtake Gregori the dark one.
The completion of their lives and love shared by both couples are stronger than one can ever imagine. It begins to reveal why Savana Dubrinsky becomes the only one female that is the light to Gregori world. Gregori became the right and perfect life mate giving Mikhail’s daughter the life mate that is meant to be; the powerful protection she needs as the princess and daughter to their prince. Understand that in their world, and the presence of the vampire Gregori is the perfect one for her or she would have suffered in the hands of any other male. The transcendences of one generation responsibilities of power, spirit, traditions, civilizations and cultural existences to another in their normal way of life structure.
I give the Dark Magic five start and more because it is the most important principle individual of their race and their world. Their prince was able to learn from their history the very existence of the healers and the reason for living on with their world.

Despite the obvious mis-treatement of Savannah, when Gregori fails to leash the beast within, this was another good Carpathian story.

Seeing Gregori's softer side is great, especially after him always seeming so aloof and untouchable. More repetition, however, especially in the 'romance' parts. Carpathian men seem pre-programed to have the same addictions over the human body, which gets a bit repetitive.

How to explain what I felt when i was reading this book? First, I was disgusted at how Gregori treated Savannah and then things started to get worse. savannah started creating all these reasons as to why Gregori's behavior was justifiable and how everything she did was wrong and in the way of Gregori's life. Towards the very end of the book, I was a teeny tiny bit more simpathetic to their current situation, but still.

If this were to be the first Carpathian novel, I absolutely would not continue with the series. Since I've read so pretty good reviews about the next installment, I'll give it a shot.

First, trigger warning for sexual violence - there is a rape in this book, and it's not pretty. If you fully accept Carpathians as being non-human, then you'll see this as a near-epic-level tragedy overcome through will and compassion, and it's fantastic. If you have trouble with the concept of non-human characters, then you're going hate how this turns out. There's really no in-between. Either you get it, or you don't.Savannah's got a lot of personality, and she's very naive, but she's not stupid. Gregori proves himself to be adaptable, compassionate, and unfailingly loyal - one of the better characters in the series, really.Gary Jansen is introduced in this book, and he's an important character. There're plenty of gross and scary vampire fights going on. This is Gregori and Savannah's story.

I was really excited to read this story. Gregori is my favorite Carpathian and Savannah is the daughter of the prince. It's a good combination and I like that they're opposites. I liked when they focused on them, but didn't care for the superfluous action in New Orleans.

With Feehan sometimes I get really involved in her characters and sometimes it just doesn't happen for me. I think I can blame it partially on my mood.

Dark magic sticks with her carpathian's and lifemates and while I love her writing in general, this book didn't pull all my attention. The leading female I feel gave in too easily, though i did enjoy how she managed to bring him back from the brink of his inner demon. I also liked how she was raised partially involved in human life.

The leading male, was strong, arrogant, but I didn't fall head over heels for him. He was sweet to his female, strong against the bad guy, and all sorts of confidence brewed from him, but I couldn't engage so easily with him.

Either way the story line continues in Dark Magic.
The writing is strong, the plot is good. It still worth reading.

I absolutely loved Gregori but my feelings towards Savanna are mixed. I liked how she challenged Gregori’s views but she embraced the idea of a lifemate faster than I would have liked. It seemed like one minute she was totally against it and the next she was all for it. I just didn’t get a feel for the transition from one end of the spectrum to the other. Overall, it was a good book with an engaging plot and I enjoyed reading it.

At last, we get Gregori’s book. Most readers who started the Carpathian series at the beginning with Dark Prince, have been waiting for our ancient warrior to get his happily ever after –and with Dark Magic, the wait is over. We only had to wait four books. And for me, the wait was worth it.Gregori is one of the oldest and the deadliest of Carpathian men. As with all the men of his kind, he lost the ability to feel emotions and see in color when he turned 200. He’s nearly a thousand now. And he is dangerously close to losing his honor and becoming the evil vampire he hunts. All vampires were Carpathians to begin with: they all drink blood; can use telepathy; shapeshift; and must avoid the sun. But Carpathian men who give up hope of salvation, of finding their lifemate, embrace evil and become the beast that is the vampire.Gregori has found his lifemate. She is Savannah, daughter to his best friend, Mikhail. She is a magician who has left the Carpathian Mountains of Romania to seek her independence. Gregori had come to her when she was 18, but she was not ready to be with him. She begged him for time and he gave her five years. These years have been very difficult for him. So difficult, that when they are finally reunited, he is almost more beast than man. He spirits her away to his lair and “claims” her. Savannah is very attracted to Gregori, but the act between them is far from gentle. She thinks him a monster, until she allows herself to use the telepathy of her people and see inside his mind.Gregori is a tortured soul. He believes himself to be the monster she has branded him. But he loves her; he needs her. He doesn’t think he deserves her; especially because he thinks he tampered with nature and somehow forced her to become his lifemate while her mother carried her in the womb. Savannah begins to soften toward Gregori as she sees the ways he is fragile. And she realizes that despite his strengths and dominating ways, she has much power, simply because of his feelings for her.The pair leave San Fransisco and head to New Orleans, where they take up residence. They quickly run into trouble with a ring of vampire hunters who are, ironically, led by a vampire. While raiding a safe house for our hunters, they find Gary Jansen, a scientist and true-believer, who they quickly befriend. He becomes Gregori’s first human friend, and goes on to become a reoccurring character in the series.Gregori is very old and has some old ideas. He is stubborn and overbearing. But he is also very sympathetic. He loves Savannah so completely. And their love scenes are very, very hot.Like all of these books, there is a little repetition with the language. We get several reminders that Gregori is “the Dark One.” And our standard reminder that he is “sensual with a hint of cruelty.” The only problem I had with this book is the first love scene between the two which…..well I won’t get into it, but it struck a nerve with me. I found that while I loved Savannah, for some reason I just couldn’t get past that scene with Gregori and wasn’t overly fond of him, even by the end of the book. The book is still a page turner and the action in it keeps it going. Poor Gregori will soon find his hands full with his mate and that was definitely something that kept me going with the read. Give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

This is Gregori's story and one of the reasons that I love these books. Gregori has been alone for so long and has scarificed so much for his people that when he finally finds his lifemate he is sure that it is because he messed with fate and made it happen. Savannah is such a free spirit and so fun loving she is the perfect mate to loosen up Gregori and make him see that not all human's are bad and that love and laughter do have a place in his life. You also meet Gary Jensen in this book. He plays a roll in future books but here he is just someone that Savannah convinces Gregori to save from the vampire hunters. Gary becomes very loyal to Gregori and Savannah, to the point of saving their lives. Gary also provides comic relief and he shows a great deal of courage for a science nerd. I love the touches of humor throughout the story and it is amazing to watch Savannah come in to her power as Gregori's life mate.

Great Book!! Would recommend to anyone who likes supernatural romance. Loved both Gregori and Savannah. Feehan makes all of her books so vivid. For anyone who wants to read be forewarned that you might not be able to put it down until you've finished it! Gregori is all Savannah could want in a man yet she doesn't want to be put in restraints all her life. I loved that Savannah could make people feel awesome by singing one song. Gregori is also impressive with his masculinity and rigid set of rules (which im pleased to say he made a few exceptions for Savannah). I think my favorite Carpathian would be Gregori and I hope that even though his book is over he won't disappear!

“I liked this book overall. I love Gregori. However, I couldn't stand Savannah. In spite of growing up wealthy, having two wonderful loving parents, a great magic career, an incredible man devoted to her, it seemed like all she did throughout the book was whimper, bitch, and moan. Half a dozen times I felt like saying, "oh come on, grow up".

The Dark One, Gregori knew his time was running short and he needed a lifemate. He believed he had the power to force the daughter of the Prince to become his lifemate but when she asked for a few years of freedom, he could do nothing else but let her go. Savannah Dubrinski may have been the daughter of a powerful ancient, she knows the basics about being Carpathian, but she never really understood the life of the male Carpathian until Gregori, the most scary of all males, claimed he could wait no longer before claiming her as his lifemate. Spending time with the humans in America had given Savannah a new way of life that she enjoyed the problem was if she could find a way to get her way mix with his way to make them both happy.Book 4 ….. Back to the basics, this is almost as good as ‘Dark Prince’. I love the ancients, they are strong, set in their ways, and knowledgeable. Watching them go from cold and dark to the warm light, is always interesting. Gregori specifically, he had given Mikhail and Aidan such a rough time about controlling their lifemates, I found myself laughing at him in all his frustrations. I normally like to see other Carpathians in the story, but this one doesn’t have anyone else, they talked about Julian (set up for the next book I think) but I was ok with it just being Gregori and Savannah and their human friends like Gary. I hope that just because Gregori has his lifemate, doesn’t mean we wont see him again, he is and has been one of my favorites, his stern ways, his certainty of right and wrong.

Finally, the book that's given me nothing but heartache (in a good way,) Dark Magic by Christine Feehan. I have been anxious to read this one since I began the series back at the beginning of the year. This is the fourth book in Feehan's Dark Carpathian series, and the (long awaited) story of Gregori and Savannah. Savannah is the daughter of Mikhail, the prince of the Carpathians, and his lifemate Raven (for their amazing story see the first book in the series, Dark Prince.) When she learned of her destiny, Savannah fled the safety of her home in the Carpathian Mountains and traveled to America where she became a world-famous magician capable of mesmerizing illusions. Gregori, the dark one, the name whispered by Carpathians and vampires alike, is destined to be Savannah's lifemate. He is the legendary hunter of their people and an extraordinary healer. The most powerful of all Carpathians, Gregori is a hard man. He has suffered more than any other Carpathian for he is called upon to dispense justice and all of that killing has taken a terrible toll. His own people fear him and the immense power he possesses. Savannah was born to be Gregori's lifemate, a terrifying thought for one so young. More than anything, Savannah desires her own independence and the freedom of her own choices. Gregori has given Savannah five years of much needed freedom, but at what cost to his very soul? He has lived for centuries, and without his lifemate, the light to his darkness, he will become a most dangerous monster. Now the vow he has made to her is at an end and so is his control. He is very close to turning and is now unable to seek the dawn to kill himself. He knows how incredibly powerful he is; knows that there is no one who could defeat him. Not Mikhail, Aidan or even Julian could hope to destroy him. He knows that if he turns, he will tear the world apart. Gregori can no longer trust himself and seizes Savannah. But it is too late? Having her presence near him sends him toppling over the edge. The struggle between the man who has struggled with insurmountable darkness for endless centuries, and his beast is truly amazing. Savannah merges her mind with his and "feels" the suffering he has endured for her. For the first time, she understands Gregori's plight. The five years of freedom he has given her have been horrible for him to endure. She recognizes that it is her fear and young age that have brought so powerful a man to such a pitiful, horrible state, and she is consumed with guilt. She reaches out to him despite her fear and in her total acceptance of him, he finds control over the beast. Together, they must learn to live in each other's worlds. Gregori must "allow" (as he so presumptuously puts it) Savannah freedom to walk among mortals and to make her own choices, and Savannah must learn that Gregori only wants what is best for the two of them (even if he has a somewhat pushy way of showing it!) This was a great story and I am looking forward to book #5, Dark Challenge.
