I thought that this was a good simple story about a daughter and a mother and overcoming a simple obstacle together and the words and amount or reading was perfect for the age range given.

Based on the true life adventures of the famous balloonist Myers family of the late 1800s, this tells a tale of the mother participating in a balloon race and the daughter's accidentally stowing away and coming along for the trip. The story seems a little bigger than life and I wouldn't believe it to be fact but it is an interesting introduction to this family, hot-air ballooning and independent women of the Victorian age. Cute folk art type illustrations add to the appeal.

Illustrations: acrylic painting. This book is about a young girl named Ariel who wants to race with her mom in a hot air balloon. Her mom says that she is too young to ride in a hot air balloon. On the day of the race, Ariel gets in the hot air balloon to look at it and accidentally falls asleep. Her mom starts flying the hot air balloon without realizing her daughter is in it. They go through several obstacles, but end up winning the race because of Ariel's help. This book is realistic fiction because it is a story that could actually happen and it involves real life people. Age appropriateness: intermediate.
