About this audiobook

She was of American blood, born in the islands. He was a native islander. Their love bridged two worlds that would one day threaten to tear them apart. As a child, Jana Rutherford played barefoot on the sparkling Hawaiian beaches with her friend, Akela, and Akela's handsome cousin, Kimo. But that carefreeness would change as Jana grew...and the quality of her and Kimo's friendship grew as well into something deeper, stronger. It was then that Jana first heard the whispers, "He's not her kind" -and discovered the differences people drew between a Hawaiian-born American and a native islander. Faced with the ignorance of others and a painful time of separation from Imo, it would be easy for Jana's love to grow cold. Especially with Bayard, the dashing brother of Jana's wealthy friend, Edith, showing such evident interest. Attractive, charming, and of American stock like herself, Bayard represented a lavish, exciting world that Jana had only read about. But Kimo stood for all she had known and loved. In each intricate quilt of the Hawaiian women, a secret was hidden known only to its creator, a story contained in its design. Jana's life seemed much like a quilt: delicately yet passionately fashioned by a Creator who knew how to assemble the pieces into a mysterious, glorious pattern- a life's tale yet untold.

This is the final story in “The American Quilt Series” and takes place in the 1880s in Hawaii. The two main characters from “The Pledge”, JoBeth and Wesley Rutherford, are now living in Hawaii and raising their daughter and son there. Jana Rutherford, their daughter, was born and raised playing barefoot on the Hawaiian beaches with her lifelong friends, Akela, and Akela’s handsome cousin, Kimo. But as time passes and people grow up, situations in life change also. Kimo goes off to school and then to an apprenticeship in Germany. Jana and Akela continue to enjoy the beauty of Hawaii, along with their friend, Edit Preston; a wealthy Hawaiian landowner’s daughter. When Edith’s older brother, Bayard, returns from the mainland he finds Jana all grown up and shows some interest in her. Jana though “truly believed that for some people, there is only one deep, passionate love in a lifetime. Whether that love is fulfilled or unrequited, the memory of such a love will give sweetness and strength to all one’s days. That’s the only kind she wanted, the kind she would wait to have.” Will Jana experience this love and with whom??I liked this story for many reasons; the way it started, you feel like you are reading the story as a flashback of Jana’s thoughts. The story also doesn’t give you a clear concise ending, but a hopefulness that true love will prevail. I also loved the way the author took you to Hawaii and made you feel like you were there, falling in love with this island and the Hawaiian people and their way of life and their language. It was a great way to end this series. Aloha!! This is a series of books I will keep on my shelf and remember the enjoyable time I had reading them. I especially liked the new updated covers on these books.
