Jenny Carpenter has given up on love, left her profession as a high school math teacher, and bought The Jonquil House, on the edge of town, to turn it in to a bed & breakfast. She's in the home stretch now, most of the renovation done and the inn's new furniture about to arrive, when, on a genuinely dark and stormy night, the house's former owner, Gabriel Raintree, pounds on the door looking for a place to stay.

Gabe is a bestselling horror writer who has hit a painful bout of writer's block. It's not random; he's got a very real personal stress going on, the details of which are not fully revealed until much later in the book. He's hoping that in quiet little Last Chance, staying in the old Raintree family home, he can avoid those stresses and get back to writing.

There are just a few problems.

Gabe doesn't remember the day, when he was ten years old, that his brother Luke was accidentally shot and killed, and knows only what he's been told. Those suppressed memories may be trying to come to the surface.

Jenny has given up on romance for herself, but her friends haven't given up on it for her. The new Methodist preacher in town is drop-dead handsome, and the town's very successful but now slightly senile matchmaker has said that a "handsome man" will come into Jenny's life. None of her friends thinks the preacher's fire and brimstone rigidity is any sort of an obstacle.

Oh, and there's the awkward fact that the inn seems to be either haunted, or the target of a very quiet intruder with some definite opinions about both Jenny's and Gabe's activities.

Jenny and Gabe are both interesting, likable characters with thoroughly engaging strengths and weaknesses. Zeph Gibbs, a mentor figure from Gabe's childhood, who is widely believed to be the person who fired the accidental shot that killed Gabe's brother Luke, has unexpected depths. This was an entertaining and rewarding romance novel.

    Recommended.

With it's quirky characters and crazy goings on Last Chance is never a dull place. In this latest installment of the series Jenny is opening an Inn but will the ghost living in her home be ok with that? Gabe Raintree returns to Last Chance for some peace and quiet to finish his latest novel. Dealing with the past may keep that from happening. This is a good read but if you haven't read the prior books in the series I would think it would be confusing.

Inn at Last Chance by Hope Ramsay is a charming addition to her Last Chance series. In this delightfully homespun romance, new B&B owner Jenny Carpenter clashes with gruff author Gabe Raintree when he returns to town to work on his current novel.

Jenny is sweet and good-natured and although she can be a bit of a pushover, she easily resists Gabe's offers to repurchase his old family home from her. Having had her heart broken recently, she is focusing all of her attention on completing the finishing touches on the B&B. Jenny is a nurturer and she is well-suited for her new endeavor but she sometimes has difficulty asserting herself. It is very gratifying to see her finally stand up for herself when her friends and some of the townspeople try to force her to do what they think is best for her.

In the beginning, Gabe is so grumpy and demanding that it is difficult to like him. He is intensely private and getting to know him is nearly impossible. Gabe is very troubled by his inability to remember the circumstances surrounding his brother's long ago death and he refuses to heed the ominous warnings to leave town.

Gabe and Jenny's relationship is adversarial right from the start and it stays that way for much of the novel. They are attracted to one another and while Jenny tries to woo Gabe with her tempting cooking, Gabe resists her efforts. They do eventually form an uneasy alliance as they try to uncover the truth about the ghostly shenanigans that are plaguing them.

While the overall plot is quite interesting, the pacing is a little slow. Although Inn at Last Chance is well-written, the dialogue is occasionally stilted and certain parts of the storyline are a little repetitive. The characters are well-developed but certain aspects of their behavior are frustrating. Gabe's history is revealed in bits and pieces so it is not easy to put his attitude or actions into context. Jenny takes her Southern upbringing and values so seriously that in an effort to avoid conflict, for much of the novel, she won't stand up for herself.

The storyline is interesting and engaging. The ghostly presence is quite intriguing and although a little mischievous, the ghost is also helpful. Gabe has mostly ignored a tragic and defining moment from his childhood and he finally comes to terms with long ago events. Jenny embraces her single status, makes a few changes and finds the courage to go after what she wants without any expectation of what may or may not come next.

Despite a few issues, Inn at Last Chance is an entertaining addition to Hope Ramsay's Last Chance series. It is the perfect combination of intriguing mystery, paranormal elements and understated romance that old and new fans will enjoy.

I received a copy of this via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That in no way changes my opinion of this book.

First of all, I wish I had known this part of a series; otherwise I would have opted out of reading it since I haven’t read the prior books. With that being said, this book is not something I typically read, and the details are a bit much. A lot of the book is very slow moving, and really, the last 2 chapters were probably the best.

Jenny is a former teacher, quite the baker, and just decided to buy a house to turn into a B&B. She soon encounters Gabe, an author, who used to live in the home. He is suffering from writer’s block, and wanted a quiet place to stay and focus on his writing, and decides that his former home is the place to do so.

Gabe’s older brother, Luke, was killed as a kid by a freak shooting accident, much of which Gabe does not seem to remember. The ghost of his brother haunts him, but not in a freaky, scary way. Instead, he is there to help direct Gabe, he just does not see it as such until later on.

All in all, I give this 3 stars.

Pretty good book that is both romance and ghost story. Jenny has given up her job as a high school math teacher to follow her dream of owning an inn. She bought Jonquil House, which has been deserted for years and is said to be haunted. She is just a few weeks from opening when Gabe arrives. He is a best selling author and the former owner of the house. Suffering from writer's block, he wants to buy the house back and live there while he gets his writing mojo back.Their first meeting doesn't go so well, as Gabe is quite rude to Jenny and she feels fully justified in slamming the door in his face. Thanks to some other circumstances, Jenny ends up letting Gabe stay at the house with her. She is basically a caring person, and senses that Gabe is not a happy man, so she tries to take care of him. She's also attracted to him, but having been burned a couple times in the past, she is determined to resist the attraction. Gabe is attracted to her also, but has enough secrets and unhappiness in his life to keep him from giving in.I liked Jenny's determination to follow her dreams. She has multiple people telling her that she's making a mistake, but she isn't giving in to them. She doesn't believe in ghosts and has her plans well in hand. When Gabe arrives, things start to get a little freaky. The bedroom where he's staying used to be his brother's, until he was killed in a hunting accident at the age of fifteen. Gabe was there when it happened but has no memory of it. It soon becomes obvious that the ghost is that of his brother, and Gabe is forced to face the demons of his past. The relationship between Jenny and Gabe grew pretty slowly, Both are determined to protect themselves. Jenny has a couple failed relationships behind her and believes that love and marriage are not likely to happen for her. She's attracted to Gabe, though she doesn't want to be. She can see that he's unhappy and the more she learns about his past the more she wants to help him. Gabe is keeping quite a few secrets that he sees as obstacles to any kind of relationship. He tends to use rudeness to keep Jenny at a distance, but when strange things start to happen he's determined to protect her. Jenny is equally determined to help Gabe deal with his own past.Everything that has happened comes to a head at the library fundraiser, where Gabe finally learns the truth of what happened. There's a lot he has to deal with and Jenny is there to help him. The aftermath has a couple of strange twists that I didn't see coming, especially the identity of Jenny's attacker. The scene at the vet's office was very moving and I thought it was a good resolution to the ghost problem. There were some pretty funny moments in the book. The ladies of the town keep trying to push Jenny and the new preacher together. Though it had its dark moments, I enjoyed the dinner that he came to and the way he and Gabe seemed to be competing for Jenny. What happened to him there was funny, and his later visit too. The ghost certainly didn't like him. The dog also brought some lighter moments into Gabe and Jenny's lives. There were some down sides to the small town actions also. That same preacher was a self-righteous ass, and I didn't like the way he treated both Jenny and Gabe. I also didn't like the way so many people treated Gabe like he was evil, just because of the type of books he wrote. I completely understood Jenny's frustration when her friends tried to warn her away from Gabe.Overall I enjoyed the book, though it was darker in tone than the others of the series. I'm looking forward to the next one, though I hope it goes back to a lighter read.

There were some things I did like and some things I did not like. Jenny and Gabe were as different as night and day. Ms. Ramsey almost succeeded in making Gabe so dour that I did not like the entire fighting and strife that was the first 25% of the book. I almost stopped reading it. I liked parts of the middle when things were moving along with the inn and the dog. I could have done without the ghost. I liked the secondary characters of Zeph, Nita, Sheriff Rhodes, and Maryanne. They helped the book along tremendously. I loved the setting of Last Chance, SC to be fun the description were well written and painted vivid pictures of all the settings. Overall the book was not as much my style of reading that I thought it would be. I do think the author is a talented writer. Her use of words and description were vivid and well done. Her storyline was consistent and well developed. I would like to thank Net Galley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.

4 STARS This had some twists that blindsided me. Lots of drama, action, book reviews and saving libraries, secrets and ghosts. I like the reading guide questions. Sometimes I would like to read them first and if I had it would have ruined some of the twists for me. I like Jenny. She is going for her dream. When she is offered a lot of money to sale her dream she says no. She is willing to fight for her dreams. Also willing to do a lot to help make her town better. Gabriel Raintree has writer's block. He wants to come back to Last Chance and live in his family's Jonquil house that he just sold. He is brooding, stubborn and has secrets. He believes everyone has a price. He is a famous writer and his books have been made into movies. Zeph is always quiet and seems to walk around with a gun in the woods. He warns Jenny and Gabriel to leave Jonquil alone. He does woodworking. He used to work for Gabriel's family. His grandfather blames Zeph for the death of Luke years ago. Luke died as a teenager. Gabriel was 10 years old but does not remember the accident. Zeph was the only adult their with the three boys. Simon was their too. Luke has definite ideas about what he likes and dislikes. Luke loves animals. Jenny has given up on finding a husband. She is starting her own business. She bought the old Jonquil house and is fixing it up to be a bed & breakfast. She loves to cook. She belongs to the local book club. She always read the chosen book till the end even if she does not like it. The book club and saving the library are big components to the story. I admit to not having read most of the books they have discussed. Tempted to read some of their selections though like Little Women. The setting for the story is outside of Last Chance a small southern town. Jenny so far has no furniture in the bed and breakfast except an old iron bed that she has cleaned up and new mattress on it. When Gabriel wants into stay before its open Jenny says no. So Gabriel offers to buy it back. He wants to stay for three months so he can write his next book. When Nita comes up with ideas to save the library it involves getting Gabriel involved with it. Get lots of folks interested and convince the county to keep its library. This book is a good mix of a ghost story, romance and mystery all in one. Part of the violence is the ghost but someone else is trying to ruin Jenny. Lots of strong opinions come out that are causing fights around Last Chance. I hope more stories come out that are set in Last Chance. The three stories that I have read set in Last Chance I have liked. I was given this ebook to read and asked in return to give honest review of it by Netgalley.

My first book by Hope Ramsay, as was drawn to the B&B sign (nice cover), as tend to gravitate to this subject, as a marketing consultant, having worked with many bed and breakfast inns across the country, as well as hotels. There is always some sort of action (guests and owners) within the walls of these quaint establishments.

The Inn at Last Chance, SC definitely adds some flavor for the “haunted” and mystery inn lovers at the old Jonquil House, when persistent Gabriel shows up on a rainy stormy night at Jenny’s door step, prior to opening her charming inn.

Jenny does not like this annoying interruption to her plans for establishing her new business, and all her well laid plans and preparations for baking, website, gardens, marketing, and all the fun things to do when running a new B&B.

However, mysterious Gabrielle (the former owner’s grandson), is a successful mystery thriller writer and best-selling author, in dire need of seclusion (writers’s block) and wants to rent a room long term to finish his next twisted book, in order to meet his deadlines, as he feels the old family mansion would provide inspiration.

Jenny is torn, as she does not want this rude and demanding guy intruding on her space; however, the money will be good, as he can afford it.

She allows him to move in and shortly thereafter the ghost and haunting begins (a light version), just to make the novel interesting. There are secrets from Gabrielle’s past he has to confront, regarding a tragedy and his brother’s death some twenty something years ago. Zeph, another characters- the family handyman was involved with a connection to ghosts and battered animals.

Through all of this drama, somehow Gabrielle and Jenny provide some romance and sparks to this old haunted house, and become close while they figure out the mystery, and learn more about themselves in the process. Jenny has to convince Gabrielle to leave his ghosts behind in order to move forward.

A light easy Southern small town read with quirky characters, some romance, and newfound writer, which I enjoyed. Look forward to reading more from this author, and may go back and pick up the earlier books in the Last Chance series.

Fans of Sherryl Woods, Mariah Stewart, Susan Mallery, Debbie Macomber, and Nora Roberts would enjoy this author and Home Sweet Home.

A special thanks to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for providing a complimentary ARC in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Jenny Carpenter, a former math teacher, has poured everything she has into a B&B, The Jonquil House, which should be opening soon. Gabe Raintree, a successful best-selling author, returns to Last Chance to the house his family owned for years—which just happens to be the inn Jenny is refurbishing. Gabe has always been the second son in a family where everything hinged on the first son, Luke, until his accidental death as a youth in a hunting accident. Though having been with him at the time, Gabe has no recall about the accident or what happened. Through some strong persuasion, Gabe has convinced Jenny to let him stay at the not yet ready for operation inn. However, they are not the only ones staying at the inn. The inn has the reputation around Last Chance as being haunted by a ghost of Gabe’s dead brother. An old friend of the family, Zeph Gibbs, a well-known, eccentric recluse tells both Jenny and Gabe to get rid of the house, though he never does explain why. This latest installment in the series is unlike any other part of the series. In fact, it is unlike any of the author’s other books. The new ingredient the author has added is the paranormal element in the form of Luke’s ghost presence. I am not sure I like this new twist in the story. There is a definite romance budding and growing between Gabe and Jenny, which definitely holds the reader’s attention, and I am not sure the inclusion of the ghost helped that element or detracted from it. The ghostly presence is very evident, but somehow did not seem as realistic as it has in other paranormal books, or perhaps the author had difficulty with it because this is her first foray. It just seemed to get in the way most of the time, though it was an integral element. I did enjoy the book, but I think I would have enjoyed it as much or more without the inclusion of the ghost. Once again, Hope Ramsay has captured the small town feel of Last Chance, which could easily ne any other small town in the area or in many other areas of the country. I enjoyed meeting up with other characters I have come to know and love, as they “helped” Jenny along with her romances. The picture the author painted of Gabe Raintree, the well-known author struggling with his latest book, was quite well done. I am not sure, however, about the surprise inclusion from his past. I found that strange and saw little or no foundation for it before the event.Jenny Carpenter, a former math teacher, has poured everything she has into a B&B, The Jonquil House, which should be opening soon. When Jenny Carpenter bought The Jonquil House in Last Chance, South Carolina, she didn’t listen to the naysayers’ who warned her that the abandoned house was haunted: all she sees is the possibility of making her dream of owning a Bed & Breakfast a reality. After months of renovation, her grand opening is in sight but a freak ice storm hits, leaving her stranded in the unfinished Inn. None of her friends want to drive out to the swamp to rescue her. She’s had only one visitor before the ice got too thick and she knew she’d have to stay overnight; but she turned him away. The visitor was Gabe Raintree, a famous author of horror books, and the former owner of The Jonquil House. The dark brooding Gabe, is haunted by things from his past, and hopes to find some peace in the house that his grandfather built, so he isn’t about to let the town’s tiny spinster send him packing. As determined as he is to get her to rent him a room, the house itself seems just as determined to keep him out. Then there is Zeph, a man who took care of Gabe when he was growing up, and whom Gabe turned into a popular villain in his most famous novel. Zeph doesn’t want Gabe back in Last Chance and tells him so. Gabe thinks it’s because Zeph had something to do with his brother Luke’s death many years ago, but Zeph refuses to talk about it.An intriguing mystery, a dog, and a town full of great characters fill this Southern story with memorable scenes; add in a few scary moments, offset by humor and a touch of romantic tension and Hope Ramsay has created a place you’ll want to return to. Luckily she has written more books. There is a little bit of sexual content and some language. 5 stars.
