    When New York society beauty Madeline Hammond buys a ranch near the turbulent Mexican frontier, she gets more than she bargained for including a bloody revolution and the ravages of a bandit raid. Additionally, she is abducted by Mexican guerillas and finally rescued by Gene Stewart, the daring and legendary El Capitan, with whom she falls in love. Then when the tables are turned, and Stewart becomes the captive and is sentenced to death by the bandits, Madeline and her vaqueros ride into the lawless wilds of Mexico in a desperate bid to save his life.

    American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father’s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey’s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey’s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

      Grey has a way of coloring a story with words

      This was a book club selection. I probably wouldn't have read it otherwise. This was written in 1914 and it was a little difficult to get around the stereotypes of that time. With some eye rolling on my part I did finish it and really enjoyed the landscape and story. There were editorial gaps in his stories timeline and possibilities of the characters abilities to get things done in the time allotted.

      later the words "a romance" was added to the title (circa 1942). well it should be. call me a fuddy-duddy, but i still thrill to the non-physical descriptions of romance mr. grey gives us with the hero gene stewart and heroine margaret "majesty" hammond. it makes me eager to tackle another grey novel.
