About this audiobook

“These are fantastic adventures, and Mercy reigns.” —SFRevu

#1 New York Times bestselling author Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson series has been hailed as “one of the best” (Fiction Vixen Book Reviews). Now Mercy must deal with an unwanted guest—one that brings a threat unlike anything she’s ever known.

An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from a stalker. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right.

Soon her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the furthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get him, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

Mercy isn’t about to step down without a fight, but there’s a more dangerous threat circling. Christy’s stalker is more than a bad man—in fact, he may not be human at all. As the bodies start piling up, Mercy must put her personal troubles aside to face a creature with the power to tear her whole world apart.

Adam's ex-wife comes to visit, saying she's being stalked and he has to protect her. Mercy isn't please that half the pack leap to her defense. However the stalker unsurprisingly turns out to be much more dangerous than anyone expected. Trigger warning for the loss of pets, probably should have been on the cover, but isn't.

Another great entry into the Mercy Thompson series. Lots of action and magic, with characters that you have come to know from previous novels.

The narrative was excellent and I look forward o the next book in the series.

This is my favorite Mercy Thompson book so far. As usual, Mercy's got a lot on her plate but it really feels like it all ties in together. This is the first book where I've felt like Mercy was a full fledged character, not a mary-sue who was given a couple of flaws chosen by a list and a dice roll. And Lorelai King killed it as always with the narration. Loved it!

I always forget how much I love this series until I pick another one up. Mercy is an auto mechanic married to the Alpha Werewolf in her city. Mercy is not a werewolf she is a shape shifting Coyote and she is great. She is far from perfect but she is a kick ass woman who can hold her own. She isn't a damsel in distress and will fight with everything she has to protect the ones she loves. This was a great installment and really spoke to how the pack politics works. I also love that most of the books really showcase Mercy as a strong independent woman. By the end of this book I think the pack starts to look at Mercy differently as well.

Loved it. I thought I'd hate the ex coming back to try and mess stuff up but it is just a minor part of the story. Gary and Coyote made me laugh, Honey, rocked, and there is a monster in this story that is so bad, it makes werewolves look like puppies.

NIGHT BROKEN is packed full of strong writing – great moments of humor, horror, and suspense; emotion and drama; romance and redemption. It’s another wonderful story in a series that sets the bar. NIGHT BROKEN is highly recommended for fans of the series and for those readers who appreciate really thoughtfully written urban fantasy.

Another great installment! Mercy and Adam are forced to protect Christy, Adam's ex-wife, from a dangerous stalker while they battle then next big bad thing. Coyote is back, as are a few other characters from the cross over series, Alpha and Omega. We meet Gary Laughingdog...another walker...who has an interesting gift and a warning about Coyote. I really, really liked this. I'd heard the Smurf comment in some of the other threads, but didn't get it until late in the book. Awesome. And that walking stick.... Hmmmm....

Tad was fantastic and he'll be quite an asset to Mercy's fighting force. Christy was a real witch though. Talk about manipulative and selfish. How Adam ever ended up with her is beyond me. Honey is growing on me though. I like her character and the little "something" that's going on with Gary makes me wonder if he'll be back. Still enjoying this series and I don't know how I'll stand the wait for the next installment!

Things were just starting to go right for Mercy Thompson when her husband's ex-wife calls. Christy is always a pain, but now she's gotten herself into deep water with violent stalker. Rather than calling the police, she thinks it would be better if she moved back into Adam's house and he can just protect her. Not surprisingly, she's quickly insinuating herself back into the pack, causing trouble and trying to stealthily antagonize Mercy so she'll lose face. To make matters worse, the original owner of the walking stick - a powerful Gray Lord fae turns up wanting his father's magic relic back. He gives Mercy a week to retrieve it from Coyote before he returns and destroys her world. It's not long before it becomes clear that Christy's stalker is no mere jerk, but an old school volcano god from the Canary islands. He's basically impossible to kill so things are looking really bad for Mercy and her friends this time. Of course, just when things look the bleakest, the vampires show up. It seems like they also want to kill Mercy? Surprise, surprise. Coyote also turns up, along with another of his children who can tell the future. He gives back the stick, but it quickly becomes clear that he's changed it somewhat. Will Mercy be able to save her town, save her marriage, and keep her life? It could be a close one! There was a lot going on in this book. It was a bit cluttered, but at least I didn't get bored. It was a great vacation read.

I was worried I wouldn't like this book. The dust cover originally sounded as if there was going to be a cat fight between Mercy and Christy and I could just picture Mercy getting hurt, leaving, etc. I wasn't really interested in that but I wanted to continue the series anyways. I was thus very happy when the story didn't turn out that way. Instead it was almost on par with Brigg's other books. Very engaging - I had a hard time putting it down and didn't get much sleep the past two nights as a result. And I just love Mercy. While the main story here is Christy and her non-human stalker, other pieces get pulled in that keeps it flowing from the previous books and adds more than can be worked off of. I am definitely looking forward to seeing if another book to the series is in the making. The series is getting up near the two digits now but I can’t bring myself to mine all that much here.

Things are going well for Mercy, her husband Adam, and Adam's pack until Adam gets a phone call from his ex-wife asking for help because she has a stalker. He can't turn her down and Mercy is going to help, too, despite the fact that she knows Christy for the vindictive, manipulative kind of person who won't be good for their new balance. As soon as she arrives, Christy begins her insidious ways and tried to nudge Mercy out of her new place in the Pack while making it look like Mercy has it in for her. Besides, she isn't very forthcoming about the man she insists is stalking her. When the stalker visits Mercy's garage, it becomes apparent that Christy has been leaving things out. It turns out that her stalker is a volcano god who has fixated on Christy. Some immortal whose ability to channel fire is not something any of them have dealt with before or know how to deal with now.In addition, one of the Gray Lords is also on Mercy's case to return the walking stick that has been following her around for the last few books. Because it was developing a taste for blood, Mercy had gifted it to Coyote and now she can't find him.Mercy does find a brother she never knew she had. Gary hates Coyote and blames him for all sorts of dangerous situations he has gotten him into. This situation is no different. Gary's visions are essential for Mercy to find a way to defeat the volcano god and protect those she loves. This was engaging, fast-paced and entertaining. I like the sharp contrast between Mercy and Christy which shows that Adam has learned to make better choices about the women he loves. I like that Mercy has such a strong protective streak and won't let anyone she cares about suffer.

I'm writing this after a second reading. At first the drama with Adam's ex wife was exciting because it had the potential for passion and character development. Then things just got super boring. Not so much in a plot way (though that was a bit meh), but in a writing style kind of way. Most of the book went like this: Mercy in fight with creature, Mercy recounts fight to police, Mercy recounts fight to lawyers, Mercy recounts fight to pack x2. Repeat ad nauseum. Way too repetitive. Not to mention many smaller plot points regarding Coyote & the vampires & the fae that were pointless/dull.

Although the word "scene" seems like more of a screen thing, I prefer books that have good scenes all the way through. Where you think back to yourself and can name a bunch of scenes you really loved. Other authors in the genre- Ilona Andrews, Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison- are much much better at that. And the general tone was kind of flat, aside from a bit of banter between Mercy & Tad about Christy's cooking. Seriously- I think that was my favourite part of this book. That was right near the start though, and by the end I was pushing myself to finish the book, skimming through pages.

Overall, not a very fun read. I intially gave it 3 stars, but after the 2nd read I was tossing up a downgrade to 2. I think for now I'll stick with the more generous rating.

So this story was rough! I can’t stand Christy. And Mercy is trying to save the pack moral so she’s avoiding more than confronting. I get frustrated with this story but I also love that Adam lets Mercy do her thing. I like the little bits of Mercy and Adam and their relationship. I like meeting Gary and finding that If Mercy can survive she’ll live long.

I said in the review for book 7 that I was really enjoying how Mercy's grown and this book is the same. Stuck with Adam's manipulative ex, Christy, in her house, and protecting Christy from the powerful creature that's stalking her, Mercy stays calm and gets the job done. She's still Mercy, though, so Christy still gets hers in the end.

Coyote played a bigger part in this book than I expected, and it seems he's been playing a much bigger part than Mercy expected.

I just really liked this book. Mercy's familiar to me, I've been reading about her for a long time, and I love watching her grow and change and keep fighting. Her budding friendship with Honey is pretty cool, as is her meeting Gary Laughingdog.

The book was fun, I liked it, this series has only gotten better as its gone along.

    Night Broken
    4 Stars

The victim of a vicious stalker, Adam’s ex, Christy, arrives on the doorstep and proceeds to make Mercy’s life miserable. Whether it is taking over the kitchen or the bathroom or the entire pack, Christy takes full advantage of her situation and Mercy make it her top priority to locate the stalker just to get Christy out of her hair. Unfortunately, things are not as they seem and the threat posed by Christy’s less than human stalker becomes more and more dangerous to everyone Mercy holds dear.

An entertaining addition to the series with an action packed storyline and compelling character development. The pack’s history with Christy is quite insightful and it was interesting to see which members could be manipulated and which ones couldn’t.

Adam’s interactions with Christy are the most annoying element as even though he is quite aware of her narcissistic personality, he still allows her to browbeat him and isn’t as assertive as he could have been with her. He should have put her in her place immediately rather than waiting until Mercy’s life was in danger.

Another highlight is the reappearance of Coyote and the Walking Stick, but this is undermined once again by the negative portrayal of the female characters other than Mercy and Julie (although Honey does seem to have mellowed and the possibility of a love interest for her is intriguing).

In sum, despite my issues with the series, the books are fun to read.

Love going into this world. Includes a tough broad (something I love to see), characters who have real characters, and plots that are fun and often unpredictable. Patricia Briggs is one of my go-to-authors who can always be depended upon for an absorbing book based in a world that's nothing like my own. Highly recommended. I'll admit this particular one assumes that you know who some of the individuals are without a lot of explanation but it IS, after all, the eighth volume in the series.

Another entertaining Mercy Thompson book! Sure, it's a book about werewolves and shapeshifters and fae and volcano gods... but it's so well done that you believe it.

Number 8 in the Mercy Thompson series - I haven't read any of the others. Coyote shapeshifter Mercy and her werewolf alpha mate Adam receive a call from his ex-wife and mother of his daughter saying she needs help as a man is stalking her. Having the manipulative Christy in their home and making an obvious play for Adam puts Mercy on edge. However, there is a much greater problem looming; an ancient volcano god from the Canary Islands believes Christy is his lost love and will stop at nothing to get her back. Strong female protagonist. Okay read.

If you are dyed blue are you at risk of being abducted by Smurfs?

Mercy and Adam have an unwelcome house guest, Christy, Adam's ex-wife. She is fleeing a stalker who has killed at least one person and burned down a condo. Oh, and he might be a volcano god. Even more reason for Christy to try and manipulate her way back into Adam and the pack's life.

This instalment of the Mercy Thompson series is filled with tension. The injection of Christy back into the werewolf pack politics, the new enemy, the need to protect people who are trying to hurt you, and the suspicion of the werewolves being responsible for a rash of murders, could induce reader anxiety. Patricia Briggs has certainly left no obstacle out of Mercy's way in Night Broken.

Needless to say, the review of the next instalment, Fire Touched, will be coming soon.
