My favorite book in the series so far! Loved the weaving of the traumatized heroine AND hero in this! So excited for Holly and Will's book!!!!!

The story of Mary Chase and Jack Talent who love to hate each other, hiding their feelings under a layer of disgust and sparking off each other all the time, they now have to work together and it's proving interesting. It's pretty predictable for the romance but the adventure kept me on the edge of my seat. However there were times when my interest waned. This is one of those stores with a complex back-story and I'm not sure the author knows what it is.

I think that the shaowdance is like the other books that I have read but this has what makes it unique by itself. The beginning was very different and more like detective work in nature but eventually turn into the other stories partten. Very unusal with the demon wanting to be part of the world it does not belong. Insignt for the lady to see beyoud her serifice that it was possible for her to defit the devil.

The characters are kinda needlessly enemies even though they're both drawn to each other, so we spend most of the book with them separated by their secrets and pushing the other away, and by the time they're finally honest with each other I was just kind of already exhausted from waiting. And then they were separated a couple more times and then next thing the book was over. I didn't get much of that fun feeling of a romance. Otherwise it was kind of average.

Reviewed by: Rabid ReadsThere are currently four installments in Kristen Callihan’s Darkest London series and every single one of them has been a 5-star read in my opinion, including Shadowdance. The last three books have fallen more on the historical side of paranormal romance but this newest one is packed full of steampunk-y goodness which only made me love it more. The story is captivating in that I-can’t-put-it-down kind of way and even though there aren’t any love scenes until the very end, the torturous build-up and flirting are almost just as satisfying. If you’re trying to find an author who consistently delivers first-class novels that are truly unique, you can’t go wrong with Kristen Callihan. In Shadowdance, readers get to learn more about the mysterious GIM (Ghost in the Machine) and let me tell you, they are as freaky as they are fascinating. It’s rare for me to come across a breed of supernatural that I haven’t read about yet so Callihan deserves some mad props! In this book the author gives us a brief history lesson, introduces their relatives the shadow crawlers and further elaborates on what we learned about their kind in Moonglow. But the surprises don’t stop there! If you’ve been following this series, then you’ve probably already pegged Jack Talent as being a shifter and he is. Well, kind of. There are some new revelations on that front as well and they will most likely give you whiplash. I’m telling you… this book is one OMG moment after another!I loved reading about Mary and Jack; they are both sharp tongued, no BS kind of people and when you partner them together you get the most delicious kind of friction. They’ve both been fueling their strong dislike for each other for the past four years and make an unlikely team but as their pasts come to light so do a few shocking similarities. I enjoyed discovering their respective tortured histories almost as much as I liked their snarky on-the-job exchanges. Hot tempers turn to even hotter flirtations which ultimately result in two of the sexiest non-coitus scenes that I have ever read. No one write descriptive detail quite like Callihan; who would have thought that a first kiss could be better than the big O?This book’s plot takes readers on a wild chase through the dangerous streets of London; the SOS investigation takes so many unexpected turns that you’ll be hard-pressed to figure anything out until the author wants you to. Many of this series’ lovable characters also make cameo appearances which is always a nice little bonus for fans and a few hints are dropped as to who will be the next paranormal couple featured in this series. I usually try to include at least one negative critique in my reviews but in this case, honestly, there are none. I read this novel in one sitting and I’m half-tempted to do it all over again!Kristen Callihan is 4-for-4 with her Darkest London series; Shadowdance is a 5-star read across the board!

As regulators for the SOS (Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals), Jack Talent and Mary Chase are tasked with keeping the existence of supernatural beings from the general public. Unfortunately, someone is killing their kind in very gruesome and very public ways. Forced into a partnership despite their shared animosity, Mary and Jack must work together to defeat a diabolical enemy whose nefarious plans may well result in their deaths.

This installment of Kristen Callihan’s Darkest London series has so many of my favorite elements: An intense love/hate relationship, an intensely tortured hero with a heart-wrenching past who doesn’t think himself worthy of being loved, a fierce and independent heroine not willing to put up with the hero’s BS, an incredibly smarmy villain who gets his just deserts not to mention detailed world building, a nerve-wracking plot and solid secondary characters.

My one small caveat is that Jack and Mary’s emotional tug of war went on a tad too long but the ultimate resolution to their relationship is exceedingly satisfying.

All in all, a fantastic addition to an entertaining series and the next book featuring Will Thorne and Holly Evernight is shaping into a real doozy.

    • The sexual tension is ridiculous with these two.

    • We get to meet William Thorne

    • There is a lot of mystery

    • Lastly, the action scenes are amazing.

Although I have no fault with the story since I do find it is enjoyable although it can be a bit uneven but I noticed this book tried so hard to sound British that there's a lot of grammatical errors in it. Usually I don't bother with it while reading but I think I skim over some of the quotes because some of them doesn't even make sense and fake.

Kristen Callihan is back with the 4th installment in the Darkest London Series. This time we branch out a bit from the usual Ellis family members to some "adopted" members of the family--GIM (Ghost in the Machine) Mary Talent and shifter (or is he?) Jack Talent. Both characters are part of the previous volumes in the series, so fans of the series have already been introduced to them. In Darkest London #3, Jack had a horrific, traumatizing, and life-altering experience at the hands of demons. He is now consumed with revenge and has shut everyone who loves him out of his life. Mary Chase has been through trauma of her own. For years these two have detested one another (or have they?), and now they find themselves partnered on a chase for the Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals to hunt down a vicious serial killer. Can they refrain from killing one another long enough to focus on the case? And what if one of them is the main suspect?I have enjoyed all of this series and look forward to the next one to come out in 2014, Evernight. (The end of Shadowdance sets up quite nicely for Evernight, of course.) I have waited quite a while for this one to come out, so my memory of reading the other volumes isn't the freshest, but I don't think I quite enjoyed Shadowdance as much as the others. I just don't think I connected with Jack and Mary the way I did with Poppy, Miranda, and Daisy.

I love a tortured hero in my books and Jack Talent is definitely tortured. He's also strong, loyal, dark, brooding and sexy. In other words, he's down-right irresistible. This series has been on my auto-buy list since I read the first one, Firelight, and will stay there as long as she keeps writing them. This series also gets better and better with each one. Here we learned more about the often snarky relationship between Mary Chase and Jack Talent. There was a few new creatures added in to make this a fresh new take on the paranormal genre. Definitely recommend this book, but in order to get the full enjoyment out of it I would read them in order. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: A fantastical world with dark and terrible secrets and a dose of pent-up sexual tension that kept me hooked to learn all the mysteries of these complex characters.Opening Sentence: Life was not a long, straight road, but a series of turns. The Review:I may be a little biased with this review because it is no secret that I absolutely love this series. I have been intrigued with the relationship between Jack Talent and Mary Chase ever since their first tension filled scene. I was ecstatic to finally learn their history and what exactly caused them to appear to hate each other so much. Jack would visibly seethe whenever he was near Mary and I really wanted to know why. Some time has passed since the terrible events of Winterblaze when Jack was taken prisoner by demons and he hasn’t been the same since then. Jack who was once clean-shaven and kept a tidy appearance now has let his hair just be an uneven shorn mess although his suits aren’t quite as bad. Jack has been on the case of the Bishop of Charing Cross, a serial killer who has only been targeting demons, and he hasn’t had much luck catching the killer. But perhaps there is a reason Jack is letting the killer stay on the loose…Mary Chase has worked for the SOS, the Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals, for a while now but she really hasn’t been on a case. Mary gets an incredible lead as to who the Bishop of Charing Cross is and she can’t believe it. In an even more unexpected move, Mary gets her first real case and it just so happens that she has to work with Jack and solve the Bishop of Charing Cross case. Mary is able to actually keep an eye on Jack now to see if the rumors are true.Shadowdance is set in this incredible underground world of London. It has paranormal with a mix of Victorian steampunk. The paranormal isn’t always what you think, Mary is a GIM (a ghost in the machine) and Jack is a shapeshifter or is he? I love the twists that Kristen Callihan puts on these marvelous characters. To find out more about a GIM, please read these novels! The other things that I really love about this series are how each character has a dark and terrible secret that is teased at many times before finally being revealed and how each relationship has this incredible pent-up sexual tension. I get really sucked in to how all these elements combine and how the characters play off of all this emotion.Mary is hard as stone tough but she does have a huge vulnerability and I really liked that about her. She really wants to do more with investigations but she also really wants to do something else with her life but in Victorian England she kind of has to deal with just being a woman in that society. She can’t show off her powers. She keeps to herself and doesn’t really confide in others. When she finally decides what she wants, she is the one to take it upon herself to do something about it. She doesn’t wait.Poor Jack Talent has had a terrible life. I don’t think anything has ever gone right for this guy except for stumbling into Ian Ranulf’s life where he worked for a few good years before turning to the SOS. Jack has many terrible secrets and to put them on paper, he may come off as quite the bad guy, except for the fact that he really isn’t. Life just hasn’t given this guy many opportunities and he channels this into the anger and aggression that he shows towards Mary since he isn’t allowed to show her his true feelings.I did have a couple hang-ups about this novel and it was only after the novel was over did I realize them. The ending left me wanting more but it also wrapped up way to quick. There were a few elements that were left undone/unsaid that I really want to know the fallout about. Because of this I’m having to take a star off my perfect read (*tears of sadness*) but if you would like to discuss this with me, leave me a comment or email me. I don’t know if the ending was just to give them their moment of happiness before the fallout of everything or what…Overall, I would wholeheartedly read this novel again. (Along with the whole series.) I loved the characters. I love this world. Shadowdance (with a wee bit of help from Entwined) neatly set up the next book in the series, Evernight, and I can’t wait to see how that plays out when it comes out in August.Notable Scene:Then she saw what he’d only given her a glimpse of before. Need. So stark and pure that the hard marble beneath her seemed to dip and sway. A surge of something fierce went through her body. The strong column of his throat worked on a swallow, and his words came out raw. “I didn’t want to feel this.”That she knew precisely what “this” was made her want to cry and to laugh at the same moment. “Neither did I.”He’d laid himself bare. She kept that knowledge close to her heart, and when she touched him, she did so gently, her fingertips skimming along his strong jaw. He held himself tight as new bed ropes, but his breath left in a small exhalation as her fingers slid into his soft hair to cradle his skull. The wool of his coat whispered as he moved. His big hands cupped her cheeks as if she were blown sugar. Inches away, he stared at her, his gaze a living thing that thickened the air and sent heat and trepidation skittering along her needy flesh. His gaze lowered to her mouth. Such power in a look, the way it made her lips feel fuller, softer. And he responded, making a small sound as he came closer, his breath light and quick, his lids at half-mast. “Do you know what it’s like to have what you want most in the world constantly in front of you,” he whispered, “and never dare take it?”Oh, yes, she knew. How well she knew that sweet ache. And she’d been a fool to ignore it. “If you never dare,” she said, “how will you know you are truly alive?”FTC Advisory: Forever/Hachette Book Group provided me with a copy of Shadowdance. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

This is the 4th book in the Darkest London series by Callihan. The fifth book will be titled, Evernight, and is scheduled for an August 2014 release. This was a wonderful book full of steampunk elements as well as romance. I do feel like it was weaker than previous books, mainly because the plot seemed to be merely a backdrop for the romance.I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was beautifully done. The narrator has a lovely lilting English accent and did an excellent job on character voices and conveying character emotion. Really it was a very well done audiobook and I enjoyed it a lot. This book tells the story of Mary Chase and Jack Talent. Mary is trying to make something of her life and the Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals has given her a cause to fight for. For Mary’s first case she is given the task of hunting down a vicious killer that has been plaguing the streets who has been called Bishop of Charing Cross. Unfortunately for Mary her partner on the case is Jack Talent, someone she is definitely not on good terms with. Jack is struggling with secrets and demons of his own, he has never quite recovered from his torture in the last book. Jack and Mary are definitely at odds, but they are also oddly attracted to each other. The book is told from both Mary’s and Jack’s POV. The book switches back and forth between the two kind of erratically. It may be because I was listening to this on audiobook, but it would take me a few seconds to realize that we had switched POV.I enjoyed reading more about Mary Chase, she is a GIM (Ghost in the Machine), and since the GIMs were introduced I have wanted to know more about them. GIMs are basically humans who have died; their hearts are replaced with clockwork hearts and their soul is put back into this bio-mechanical body. This book went into how GIMs are made in great detail and I really enjoyed this background.Mary Chase wasn’t my favorite character but she’s okay. She is definitely feisty and determined to do something with her life be it with or without Jack’s help. She is very resourceful and definitely has a strong sense of self. I thought it was admirable that she had the courage to strike out on her own and start to make her own way. She’s had a hard path throughout this series. We learn a lot of her background as well and that was interesting.Jack Talent wasn’t my favorite male lead ever either. He is a jerk to Mary for much of the book...yes he has his reasons. He actually comes off as a bit stalkerish and creepy throughout parts of the book. However, I found it hard to believe that Mary would forgive him so quickly after four years of animosity between the two...but you know whatever. Jack does have a very interesting background and I loved the story behind his history. The whole history there is full of demons and fallen angels and was very intriguing. Jack does have a twisted sort of nobility to him. However, he is one of the darker male leads we have read about in this series. The chemistry between the two is very off and on throughout the book. They have a very I love you, I hate you, I love you thing going on. There are parts of the book that do really sizzle. I have to say this book has one of the longest love scenes ever (although it may have just seemed long because I listened to it for a whole 40 minute car ride). The scenes between the two are sexy and beautifully written and generally well done.I felt like the plot really took a backseat to the romance for this book, much more so than with previous books in this series. Most of the book was spent on Jack and Mary arguing and making up, spying on each other and making excuses for it. I wished the story would have focused a bit more on the murders and solving them.I love this world full of magic, demons, steampunk elements, and fallen angels. It really is a well done world. The story is wrapped up nicely for this book and the story for the next book is started. Apparently the next book will involve Holly Evernight (the inventor who designed some of the clockwork hearts) and Will Thorne (a demon whose heart has been replaced by one of Holly’s devices).Overall I really enjoyed this book. It was probably my least favorite book of the series, but I absolutely adored the first three books...so that means this was still a really good book. Mary and Jack weren’t my favorite characters to read about but they do have excellent chemistry together. I was also a little disappointed that the story was so romance-driven versus plot-driven. I still love this world and I enjoy Callihan’s writing style. I am excited to see what the next book in this series brings to the series.
