About this audiobook

In the frozen Alaskan wilderness, former state trooper Jenna Darrow survives an unspeakable breach of body and soul. But with her narrow escape comes an even greater challenge. For strange changes are taking place within her, as she struggles to understand-and control-a new hunger. To do so, she will seek shelter in the Boston compound of the Order, an ancient race of vampire warriors whose very existence is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most mysterious of them all is Brock, a brooding, dark-eyed alpha male whose hands hold the power to comfort, heal...and arouse.

As she recovers under Brock's care, Jenna finds herself drawn to the Order's mission: to stop a ruthless enemy and its army of assassins from subjecting Earth to a reign of terror. Yet in spite of their resolve, a purely physical relationship without strings soon binds Brock and Jenna together with a desire fiercer than life and stronger than death itself-until a secret from Brock's past and Jenna's own mortality challenges their forbidden love to the ultimate trial by fire.

"We're in Boston, at a private facility. It was the safest place for you to be now. The safest place for all of us."

Read for my Set in New England Halloween bingo square.
Way more of a paranormal fiction story than romance, this couple had no building relationship at all. This book felt like series filler, not a lot of advancement in Dragos vs The Order. I wanted Hunter and Mira to get together (Mira could age super fast or something) but I see Hunter is the hero of the next book with a different heroine. Boo.

    Synopsis:
After being attacked by the Ancient, Jenna Darrow finds herself struggling to understand the changes going on around and inside her. Not only must she come to terms with the changes occurring within her own body and with the existence of vampires in the world but also with her inexplicable attraction to Brock, a Breed warrior who has the power either to heal or destroy her heart forever…

    Review:
The last two books in the series have been hit or miss for me (Ashes was a miss but Shades was an amazing hit). Unfortunately, Taken by Midnight is more miss than hit, although there are some highlights such as the continuing story of the battle against Dragos and the search for the missing Breedmates. I really enjoyed the fact that the women of the Order take an active role in the story and are not merely window dressing.

Another positive aspect is the information provided regarding Hunter, the cold and logical warrior who has fascinated me from book 5, and Chase who seems to be coping with some serious issues. I am eagerly awaiting their stories.

The romance is the most disappointing aspect of the book because, even though Jenna and Brock are interesting as individual characters, their relationship lacks the chemistry and intensity of connection that characterizes the other couples in the series. While you cannot help but sympathize with Jenna’s suffering, it is difficult to completely identify with someone who is completely immersed in their pain and guilt to the extent that they have almost lost the will to live. Brock, on the other hand, is an amazing hero, loving, patient and protective but his attraction to Jenna didn’t mesh with me.

Overall, the writing flows and the action scenes are excellent. However, many questions remain unanswered regarding Jenna’s transformation and I hope that details will be forthcoming in the next installments.

8th book in the series. A vampire book based on The Breed, a race of vampires descended from aliens.
Dragos the nasty Breed who is trying to create a super race of Breeds is up to more evilness in this book. He kills and plots against The Order (the good Breeds) but has many victories denied to him by the quick thinking Order and their mates.
Jenna an ex cop living in Alaska to hide from the horrors of her past is found alive after being tortured by an Ancient that escaped from Dragos. He offers her a choice, one that changes everything. She is found by Brock a breed male of the order. He is placed in charge of her and takes it very seriously. Both are damaged by past loses and try to fight the strong attraction they feel.
The Breed Mates welcome Jenna into their fold, she jumps right into their investigation and search fro the missing breed mates taken by Dragos years ago. Together them slip through the clues and possibly find the path that leads them to the women and their freedom.
The romance between Brock and Jenna is realistic and sweet. They are two wonderful characters that you just can't help but to wish well for them.
I enjoyed the story, it had just the right mix of story/mystery/ romance.

The couple in this story is very different from all the others. That being said I have to wonder what will ultimately happen to Jenna Dawson. There is no resolution by the end of this story as to what the Ancient actually did to her. It seems that she is turning into a Breed. Which means that the Ancients had the ability to turn humans into Breeds they just never did it. It would also be nice to know why the Ancient save Jenna in the first place. I also don’t believe that he is really dead. If it were that easy I think that others would have died in the centuries that they were alive. So Jenna is human to begin with. She was an Alaskan State policewoman. She has also suffer great lose and a lot of trauma over the last four years. She is confrontational, stubborn and at times rude. Jenna also has to always be in control. She has a chip on her shoulder the size of a small SUV. I understand that she is this way because she has always tried to be tougher and meaner than the men she has been around. For most of this book and part of the previous one she has been really very likable. She puts the compound in danger when she runs away at the very beginning. She thinks that she is invincible and doesn't need anyone’s help or compassion. She learns differently very quickly. I was glad to see that she came around and might make a wonderful addition to family that is the Order.I haven’t had any real opinion on Brock. He is a smart mouth Breed that has become close friends with Kade. He is good at his job and he pulls his weight with the other Breed in the compound. I had no idea that his power is calming and/or emotionally healing others. I don’t think that there has been much mention of his power in the earlier books. I am surprised that he hates the cold so much. I mean he comes from Detroit and I know that they have some bitter winters in that part of the country. Like all the other Breed he is compassionate and kind to those that are weaker than he is and has no patience with those that would harm woman. While catching up on his story in this book I came to like him very much and I was glad that he found someone that he could love. I hope that they are able to form a bond like the other mated couples. All through this story I have had a growing sense of dread. I know that there is an end to the conflict between the Order and Dragos and I feel that it is going to be a very bloody and violent end. I mean the things that Dragos is guilty of so far make my blood run cold. He is a psychopath with seemingly unlimited power. I also have to wonder how many people he has turned into Minions at this point and how high in the government they all go. I wasn't as surprised that he had infiltrated the FBI. I could see that coming. Someone had to be in a position to draw attention away from his many illegal endeavors. I am still hoping that some of Dragos assassins can be saved but I not sure that will happen. The Order does do some damage to his plans in this story I am hoping that they can make greater headway soon. These books are involving, quick reads. You just don’t want to put the book down. You are drawn to find out what is going too had next. Ms. Adrian can also write some really hot love scenes and this scene has plenty of those. I am surprised that Brock and Jenna don’t set the furniture on fire. For those that love paranormal romance and vampires this series is for you.

Well, well, well..... there are some insane developments in this book.
First, Jenna's a mutant? Cyborg? What the hell is she? I'm pretty sure she's immortal now, especially sporting glyphs. lol

And at the beginning of the book I was thinking that it's surprising there was no shower sex so far in the series. And I was rewarded with some steaming (pun intended) shower fun. Yay.

Not my favorite of the series, but a good, solid read. I loved Brock, but I wasn't really a fan of Jenna's. Her push-back got irritating after a while. I totally understand her hesitance, but her attitude rubbed me the wrong way.

And I was literally on tears at the ending. Not exactly how I want a romance to end. (fyi: there was an HEA, just ended with sadness)

This book - this glorious, lovely book – has enamored me from the very first paragraph. Such strong characters here, such a fast-paced storyline. The author dealt with family strife, cultural differences, love, loss, grief and more in this book but never once did it feel overdrawn or trite. I loved Brock and Jenna, each living with a world of guilt and hurt, each finding something they needed as the story moved along. And the overall story arc . . . it felt as if I was being dragged up a hill to be thrown off of later. I am utterly impressed with these books.

I really enjoyed this book. I am interested in learning more about what the Ancient did to Jenna. I am glad that both Jenna and Brock were able to move past thier old wounds and move forward to a life together. I won't go into details so as not to riun this story for you, but their is a HEA ending that is not expected
In this story. Next is Hunter's story which I cannot wait to read.

Jenna Darrow left her job as state trooper because she could'nt cope any more, the death of her husband and child in an accident she blamed herself for left her feeling broken inside. Then she was kidbapped by a vampire who tortured her for days, and when she's rescued there's something he's done to her, something that will change her life forever. The Breed come to her rescue, but she chafes against the restrictions they impose. However Brock awakens feelings inside her and the two of them have to explore what's happened and what's going to happen with her. It's interesting, felt like a different twist in the series, and boy they won't be able to ignore Jenna or put her to one side, she's a warrior all the way.Cover art is completely out of whack with the actual book.

Oh boy, okay, here we go. I’ve always been a fan of Ms. Adrian’s Midnight Breed series and was looking forward to his book (even though it took me so long to finally read it.)The book read very well, was intriguing and kept me on my toes throughout most of it. I liked the suspense buildup of just what was going on inside of Jenna and found their chemistry and tension something that had me on the edge of my “seat.”What I found lacking, unfortunately, was the normal sensuality between the couple. For some reason the “hotness” of this couple just wasn’t there for me. It felt as if Ms. Adrian was dialing back a bit on those scenes. I liked the building friendship and seeing more of the Breedmates but I MISSED the warriors as they were barely there in this book.Had the ending two chapters not played out, or lack of played out, happen in the book, I would have given it four stars out of five. HOWEVER, the ending completely left too many questions still out there, many that NEEDED to be answered. It was a quick ending, almost as if the story was given up. I really like her series so I’m hoping the next book will give a bit more. Unfortunately if it doesn’t, I will most likely stop reading this series. :(

So much potential but so awkwardly put together. The only reason I keep reading these is because I have a friend who keeps lending them to me, but I think it's time for me to just say no to this series.

The ordeal she suffered left Jenna frail in both body and mind. Jenna never expected to love again after the loss of her husband and daughter four years ago. She existed day to day on a sort of autopilot – until her home was invaded by an ancient, otherworldly being who forced her to make an impossible choice. Brock, a powerful, stoic Breed Warrior was interested only in performing his job flawlessly. Keeping Jenna safe and alleviating the pain from her injuries was Brock’s responsibility. His assignment definitely did not include falling in love with the frail, stubborn human woman. When Jenna awakes she finds herself thousands of miles from her home in a secret underground facility. She wants nothing more than to bury the trauma of the attack and return home. Unfortunately, returning home is not an option for Jenna and she is forced to come to terms with her new reality. After a bumpy start, she is surprised to discover new friendships and a renewed purpose in her life. She and Brock come to care for each other as the days pass but both are adamant that any sort of lasting commitment is out of the question. Both continue to be haunted by their past failures. This stand-alone novel was easy to read and had lots of excitement and several hot, passionate sex scenes. I have not yet read any of the earlier books but had no trouble picking up the general premise of the series. I would certainly be interested in reading the other books. I particularly liked that Jenna was an astute, capable fighter in her own right. I felt a couple of scenes would have benefited from a tighter, more fluid choreography. The author, Ms Adrian, is a remarkable storyteller. She does not overload the narrative with the back story but provides enough of the history to make the character’s motivations convincing. It was an enjoyable read.LaurieReviewer for Coffee Time Romance & More
