A little confusing in the beginning but it got better as you go through the story. Zoe was sometimes annoying and she knows there are times when she should stay quiet but she can't help herself and puts herself and other in unnecessary situations. Saying that, I love her will to survive and once she realizing that she can't go back to being human, she accepts her lot. Hopefully with Simon, Justus and Adam's help, she will be a superb mage.

Last chapter of the audiobook was messed up. I missed a few bits of dialogue because the audio would just go silent for several seconds.

I could just kick myself. I've had this book for awhile now thinking it was a young adult book, which I have to be in the right mood to typically tolerate, but it's not. Great read with a good plot & interesting storyline. Looking forward to book 2.

This was a fun book to read. It was never dull or boring for me. I didn't think the pacing was super fast, but the plot moved along at a comfortable rate. The world of the Mage is an interesting one, and seemed unique to me. There was lots of sexual tension between Zoe and Adam and Justus and Simon. It will be interesting to see if she ends up with one of these men in future books. I am looking forward to reading the next one.

I really enjoyed this book - although there seemed to be a lot of loose ends - maybe they will all resolve later in the series. I'm sure there's more to Adam - else why introduce us to his former partner. I really liked Adam, at times I really liked Justus, same for Simon. Definitely didn't like Samil or Merc! Will be interested to see where all this leads. What bothered me most was that she never got her cat back! I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

Wow, Adam, Simon and Justus...who will win her heart? Maybe all three. Lots of loose ends to clear up in the next book!

Not as good as her other series, but as this was the beginning of her first series, I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt.

This is a weird one. The world that's built up has a lot of potential, but that potential is poorly explored, and a lot of loose threads of left hanging in such a way that it's unclear to the reader whether the author has a grand plan that will be laid out in future books, or whether the author has merely forgotten about (or ignored) the apparent inconsistencies.

I'll read the sequel when it comes out, because the world does have good potential, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend reading this book until I see if the sequel takes it anywhere.

My biggest complaint, in terms of storytelling, was that the main character had almost no agency. This was by design, since the world and society the author creates does not permit people in her position to have agency. But it's frustrating none the less, and the overall story ends up being about events that happen to or around her, rather than events that she has much of an active role in.

STERLING starts with Zoe Winter Merrick heading for a night out on the town with her best friend Sunny. After a few hours hanging in a club, Zoe heads home. Zoe is attacked violently by an unusual supernatural being on the way home and is left “dead”. Well, dead for a little while, she wakes up in an ambulance’s body bag Upon waking confused and scared, Zoe rips her way out and runs for her life. She runs right into Adam Razor.

Adam find Zoe crumpled on the ground bloody and confused and he takes her home and cares for her. He witnesses a strange transformation and knows Zoe has become something else but he continues to care for her and helps her face her new “self” and life. Zoe is unsure what she’s become but knows there are changes in her appearance as well as physically. Zoe dreams are also is haunted by the evil man that attacked her. Zoe and Adam develop a strong friendship and deeper emotions for each other during their time together.

While on a photo assignment with Adam, Zoe runs into a mysterious, chick magnet named Justus De Gradi. Zoe soon finds out Justus is the same “breed” (Breed = paranormal unlike humans) as herself and he offers an opportunity to become his learner and he her Guardian. He explains the dangers for her being untrained and the dangers that come from rogues (Mage kind that suck the energy out of other mages). Zoe decides to go with Justus and is introduced to the Mage world.

Zoe’s introduction to her new world is rocky at best. Once her violent maker Samil enters the scene it becomes down right brutal. Zoe must fight for her life with every fiber of her being and hope she has the strength to live with the scars.

This book is engaging... a fresh new look at the meaning of a Mage... a fantastic fantasy world...wonderful characters…great dialog that leads to brilliant one liners…at times the trials Zoe faces are just heart wrenching. That being said, I found the first have of Sterling a solid 4 but in the last 70-75% this book became magnificent, gritty, raw and completely captivating. Did I mention that there are three, super ALPHA males (Adam, Justus and Simon) all very interested in Zoe, great romantic tension! All in all I’m giving Sterling 4 ½ stars, I already have book 2 of the Mageri Series, Twist. Caution: once you hit the 75% point of this book you won't be able to put it down...burned the midnight oil with this one.

Zoë Merrick is an ordinary human woman that is until she comes back from the dead after being brutally murdered after a night out with her best friend Sunny. She wakes up in a body bag in an ambulance and makes a run for it back to her apartment, however along the way she runs into a stranger called Adam and collapses. Adam takes Zoë back to his house and whilst she sleeps for three days her body transforms into someone and something else. However it’s not until Justus walks into life some months later that Zoë finally learns what she is. This is the debut UF novel by Dannika Dark and I thought that it was wonderful and brilliant and I loved it. This is the first book in the Mageri series where Ms Dark has a new take on things, there is a lot of character and world building going that is setting us up for book 2. I really liked all of the characters in fact there was nothing that annoyed me about them or anything that I would like to change. The plot and pacing were good and I found the book and Ms Dark’s writing engrossing. Whilst there is some romantic interest from all three men in the story nothing really happens apart from two scenes where Zoë gets a bit friendlier with two of them and I look forward to see how things will play out on this front.I would have given this book 5 stars however I don’t think that I can do that because there are some spelling errors etc. and I feel that the book needs just that little bit of extra polishing off. I also found that the story jumped around a bit too much and I would find myself thinking ‘have I just missed something’. Now in Ms Dark’s defence this book is written, edited, published and marketed by her, she even does the cover art (which I think is beautiful) herself. I cannot imagine how much hard work this must be especially for your first book so that is why I have knocked only half a star off. Things should improve for the second book though as we are informed on Ms Dark’s web site that she is using Beta readers for the next instalment. I would definitely recommend this book. At the time of writing this Sterling is only £1.14 at Amazon even though it is a full length book as opposed to a novella, I would have paid lots more for it. I cannot wait for book 2 which I will most definitely be buying.

I didn't really warm up to Zoe. I felt like she's a tease as far as the men surrounding her are concerned, flirting and seducing. As a Mage, she's powerful, formidable and her instinct to survive is very admirable. I find Justus a coward and Simon naive. Why? I find it preposterous that they didn't try to challenge Samil on behalf of Zoe, now Silver, and let Adam, a mere human, do their work for them. Only Adam tickled my fancy. DDark's villains are deplorable and the Mage Council is something to watch out for.Now I have these thoughts swirling in my head when I was 85% into the book. Then as I was moving the towards the ending, that's when I had my BAM! moment. It totally caught me by surprise. It's full of superlative emotions like wrath, vengeance, grief, greed and death. It's a power punch that left me teary which ended up changing the entire story for me. Adam changed my viewpoint on the series.
