My rating: 4 of 5 starsThank you Edelweiss and the publisher for this ARC .This book is a historical romance written by Jennifer McQuiston . The publisher is Avon . There are 384 pages . The scheduled release date is 2/26/13. This was a fun romance novel. Georgette is a wealthy widow. She is invited by her cousin ,Randolph, to visit Scotland for a few weeks. But, it becomes clear that her cousin had ulterior motives for inviting her. After turning down Randolph' s marriage proposal, Georgette finds herself waking up with a strange man that claims she is his wife. Horrified, she runs away. Then she realizes she has to find the man so they can annul their marriage. Confusion is rife when the couple can't remember what actually happened that night .When James wakes up hungover and allegedly married, his new bride not only ran away , she stole his money. So, not only does he need to find out if his marriage was legal , he wants to file charges against the lady. In the meantime , someone tries to kill James and Georgette acquires a cat , a dog , and a new ladies maid. Part lighthearted comedy, part romance , part adventure , this book will match any mood your in. If you're looking for something to take you away from the day to day junk , dive into this book for pure escape from reality. The only complaint here again, is the way too relaxed language that doesn't fit with the era of time the story is set in. Now , this was an uncorrected proof, so some of the more modern phrases may be polished before publication.
I thought the characters were lively and fun. I like to see the inhibited lady lose her timidity and become emboldened. I like a guy that has honor and integrity, even though he's a little flawed and conflicted. The secondary characters were delightful.Overall a B +

When Georgette awakens in the arms of a naked stranger, she is stunned to discover that she has no memory of the previous evening. She has no idea how she got into a strange bed but apparently she has done some pretty scandalous things...and then she finds a ring on her finger....and in a fit of panic she hits her new apparent husband over the head with a chamber pot and abandons him and flees. When Georgette returns home, she finds that her memory is starting to slowly return....like she has to put the pieces together....so she starts investigating trying to find out the identity of her "new" husband. But when she finally does find him....she finds out he has been trying to find her because he believes her to be a thief, and doubts that they are truly really married....as they together search to find out the truth....there is something powerful building between them....and they start to wonder if and when they find out if they are truly married....will they both want to stay married? What Happens In Scotland was a fun and adventurous romance novel....and I am so grateful and Avon and Edelweiss gave me the opportunity to read this and be able to review it. When I first saw the cover....I was thinking "This Is A Must Read", it just drew me in and the moment I was the Synopsis, I was hooked, I started reading it, and I was amazed by how much I loved it. Jennifer McQuistion is a new author...and I just loved her style of writing. It was witty, and crazy, and a breath of fresh air. Most historical aren't very comical without ruining the whole plot...however I loved how McQuiston just put everything together, and how smoothly the story flowed and synced together to make a truly magical love story that will put at the readers heartstrings. There were quite a few things I loved about this story. One of the first was how Georgette just bangs her new husband over the head with a chamber pot (now that was pure genius) and I definitely laughed my head off at that one, and I just loved the creative way Georgette goes about to find her Husband....there were so many things that made me laugh and just got me more into the story. I also loved how Georgette and James interact with each other. At first they are enemies...and then friends...who turn into lovers....and there is definitely some twists and turns...and as always...a Villian who really makes things happen....Overall A Delightful Read that will make you eager for more from this debut author!

I had such a difficult time getting into this book, more than 100 pages in, and once there, I only really finished just to see how it ended. There was a lot of back and forth with the POV which seemed confusing to me.

A delightful tale! In a few places the pacing was irregular, but it did not detract from the overall story.

‘What Happens in Scotland’ is a début novel of Jennifer McQuiston and despite a few historical discrepancies, an unbelievable plot and a couple that don’t even know each other’s names through most of the book, I found it very entertaining.

The characters of Lady Georgette Thorold and James MacKenzie were not as three-dimensional as I might have liked them to be, but they were fun to follow around and anticipate their actions.

If this author set out to make me laugh out loud, she’s succeeded. I actually chuckled my way through the book.

If you’re looking for a quick, lighthearted read with almost slapstick comedy in it, a predictable plot and witty dialogue, Ms. Jennifer McQuiston delivered on all. And sometimes we really need books and authors like her so we would relax and just enjoy the unpretentious writing and humor they’re gifting us with.

Very fun book. Georgette has been a widow for two years. Her marriage was an unhappy one and she has no intention of marrying again. She plans to enjoy her freedom and has come to Scotland to visit her cousin. Unfortunately, he is trying to coerce her into marrying him and she runs from him. The next morning she wakes up naked, in bed with a man she doesn't know, with a ring on her finger and no idea how she got there. Horrified, she runs away before getting the man's name. Then she realizes that she needs to find out who he is so they can annul the marriage. In the first part of the book she and her new prostitute turned lady's maid, try to track him down. At first Georgette fears she married some crazy rake, but as the day goes on learns more about him, discovering that he's a local solicitor and son of an earl. This makes her feel a little better, until she finds him and discovers he thinks she's a thief. Meanwhile, James had been having dinner at the tavern when Georgette appeared, obviously drunk, and in need of assistance to escape a forced marriage. He had been doing some drinking himself and now has only vague memories of the night before, especially after she hit him in the head with a chamber pot. He does know that his money is missing and can only assume that she took it. As he tries to find her he is also trying desperately to remember what happened the night before. What he does remember doesn't agree with his belief that she's a thief, but he needs to find her. He does have a few pleasant memories and when he finds her at his office he has to decide what he believes. Once the two meet up things really start to heat up. There is a definite attraction between them, but neither is sure they want the marriage to continue. The fun is seeing them fight the feelings that are growing fast. Georgette has some self esteem issues thanks to the emotional abuse from her late husband. She doesn't believe that James would ever really want to stay married to her. James is estranged from his family, especially his father, because of some things that happened ten years earlier. He certainly doesn't think he deserves to have someone like her in his life. Georgette has two sides to her personality - the prim widow acting under the influence of her late husband, and the passionate woman that came out when she was intoxicated. Never knowing which one was going to show up at any given moment keeps James intrigued and amused. I loved the way that James and Georgette uncovered the mystery of what had happened the night before. Each thing they learned sent them on a quest for the next bit of information, meeting up with many different people. Each character brought something different to the story, exposing either a clue or a facet of the hero's/heroine's personality. There were so many fun moments, from the moment of waking, to Georgette's instructions to her "maid" and James's frequent injuries, to her refusal to stay and be protected, that I couldn't put the book down. I'm looking forward to reading the other two stories in the series.

What a delightful story. If you want to read a story that you can’t possible know how the story will end or anticipate how it is woven together, this is a great read for you. From the first sentence I was hooked. Jennifer McQuiston’s wit and descriptive writing kept me laughing and shaking my head throughout her story. Both hero and heroine were lovable as they were, faults and all. I virtually didn’t want to put the book down. I am eagerly looking forward to reading her second book.

I really enjoy this story full of suspense. We are as confused as the protagonists at first. But then it becomes funnier and funnier. A page-turner.

Read from April 29 to May 05, 2013Read for BookClub (Kindle)(DFWTea/The Cover Girls)Overall Rating: 3.50Story Rating: 3.00Character Rating: 4.00First Thought When Finished: That was a laugh out loud romp that was super cute. The "love" was a little rushed for my taste but the characters were fantastic!Story Thoughts: The humor of What Happens in Scotland kept me in stitches during the hijinks that were done by Lady Georgette Thorold. The story takes place over a 24 hour period which is a very short time. I am going to admit that this is probably what kept me from loving it. I am not a fan of insta-love but with humor that was done excellently, it was easy to forget the short time frame at times. My suggestion, just get lost in the hijinks and try to ignore the timeline.Character Thoughts: I think Jennifer McQuiston has written the most awesome kick butt characters from leads to sides! Georgette and James were both strong, fun, and full of gumption characters. However, it was the side characters of the used to be prostitute ladies maid, the butcher who refuses to serve horse meat and likes to give kittens as thank yous, and the rakishly handsome former best friend sheriff that really stole the show. I was in stitches as this unusual group of characters managed to find out what happened on the night where "memories" were a little fuzzy!Final Thoughts: I love Jennifer McQuiston's humor and character development. I think the 2nd book in the series will be a hoot!

I am a First Reads lucky winner! Waiting for the book to arrive so I can read and review it.

4/4/2013 I agree with Jennifer, this book may not be perfect but it was a lot of fun to read and is great for a debut novel.

The book starts out with a bang when a normally prim & proper widow wakes up in bed with a handsome black sheep second son, beans him with the chamber pot, and makes her escape. Georgette is on the run but the pace lapses to a walk for a couple of chapters while Georgette tries to figure out where she is running to. The pace gets back on the fast track when Georgette and James get back together.

By not perfect I mean that there may have been a few lapses in historical accuracy. Since this isn't so much "historic fiction" as it is "romantic humor" I'm not going to spend all my time fact-checking but I suspect that the expression "Tell it like it is" was not on everyone's lips in the 19th century.

The story is funny and feel-good. The writing is smooth and the dialog is comfortable. There were only one or two "dinna"s to remind us that we were in Scotland but not so we had to puzzle over what the characters were saying. The characters are (mostly) likable and the author introduced us to one or two single guys I would look forward to seeing in a series.

What Happens in Scotland by Jennifer McQuistonThis is Ms McQuiston’s debut novel and sometimes it shows. This book actually reads a bit like two novellas melded together at times instead of one whole book. There are so many characters to start with and they are all so confusing. And the points of view are constantly changing which makes it a bit difficult to stay engrossed in this story.. However, there is a very good reason for that…you see Lady Georgette has just come off of mourning and without remembering how it happened, she wakes up one morning next to a naked man, a naked man with a beard, a naked Scotsman! Apparently, she had gotten very drunk last night and cannot remember a single thing of what happened. Now she has run from the naked man, after cracking him over the head with a chamber pot mind you and every one she meets seems to be in on what happened to her, but she is too scared and ashamed to ask what happened. Of course, she is imagining the worst had happened.About halfway through the book Georgette and James finally meet up and it is still a comedy of errors, and if anything, it is even worse. Since neither of them remember the whole of what had happened. The characters James and Georgette are at times very strong ones, and at other times, they are both lacking in backbone. Sometimes to the point that you might like to slap them upside the head or shake some sense into them. Secondary characters that seem to be important one minute, somehow disappear and we don’t hear from them again There is very little back story and what is there comes to us in dribs and drabs. Much of the beginning of the story is told within the characters own head and I am not very fond of that tactic from an author. The secondary story line was an important one and I felt that it should have been explored in more detail and given a little more importance. This was a very cute , light read, but I do not think it is one I will be taking the time to re-read. I believe that the next book will be better than this one so I will be checking it out. *ARC Supplied by publisher*

Many reviewers are comparing this book to the movie The Hangover. It's a good comparison. Lady Georgette Thorold is in Scotland visiting her cousin. She wakes up one morning in a strange bed with a strange man wearing a wedding ring. She has no memory of the night before. When he wakes up, instead of asking him what happened, she freaks out and runs. James McKenzie is not much better off. When he wakes up, he doesn't have complete memory of the night before either. And then he is bashed over the head and knocked out by the woman he wakes up with. Once Georgette regains her composure, she goes on a mission to find out what happened the evening before and who the man is that she supposedly married. James is also on the hunt for Georgette, thinking her a thief. They spend the first half of the book making their ways around the village working out what exactly happened. It's a really cute story. The hero and heroine spend half the book apart, but the journey to their reunion is fun. Once they are together and after James realizes Georgette is not quite who he expected, the story takes a very sweet turn. Also we get a bearded hero for once. I liked that.ARC provided through Edelweiss.
