About this audiobook

An object of desire? Or of fear?

It was stolen from a New Orleans grave—the centuries-old bust of an evil man, a demonic man. It’s an object desired by collectors—and by those with wickedness in their hearts.

One day, its current owner shows up at Danni Cafferty’s antiques shop on Royal Street, the shop she inherited from her father. But before Danni can buy the statue, it disappears, the owner is found dead…and Danni discovers that she’s inherited much more than she realized. In the store is a book filled with secret writing: instructions for defeating evil entities. She’d dismissed it as a curiosity…until the arrival of this statue, with its long history of evil and even longer trail of death.

Michael Quinn, former cop and now private investigator, is a man with an unusual past. He believes that doing the right thing isn’t a job—it’s a way of life. And the right thing to do is find and destroy this object weighted with malevolent powers. He and Danni are drawn together in their search for the missing statue, following it through sultry New Orleans nights to hidden places in the French Quarter and secret ceremonies on abandoned plantations.

Cafferty and Quinn already know that trust in others can be misplaced, that love can be temporary. And yet their connection is primal. Mesmerizing. They also know that their story won’t end when this case is closed and the dead rest in peace once again.

Let the dead sleep by Heather Graham another great series very different but altogether beautiful works.I have read by Heather Graham and I was impressed. The evil in New Orleans does not always cover the good and this book is about good winning over evil. Danni Cafferty inherited her father's curio shop in the center of New Orleans but she was not aware of just what this meant but P.I. Michael Quinn was there to help her and explain. Danny's father had worked with Michael on several cases but he wasn't sure if Dannie understood her role in everything. Together, they worked to find a bust that was evil and a lot of bad Gus wanted for their own benefit. Fortunately the police chief was an ex-partner of Quinn's and he helped bring the bad guys down. Great story and great details about New Orleans.

In Graham’s paranormal mystery novel, the bust of an evil man has been stolen from a New Orleans grave. It’s an object most art collectors would covet in their personal collection. Out of the blue, the current owner shows up at Danni Cafferty’s antiques shop, a shop she inherited from her deceased father. But before Danni even has an opportunity to buy the bust, it disappears in the wake of the owner’s death.Michael Quinn, former cop and now a private investigator, is determined to find and destroy the bust before its long history of destruction can lead to even more deaths. Drawn together, Michael and Danni go in search of the antiquity as it makes its way through New Orleans to places hidden deep in the bayou.Once more, Heather Graham has created a gripping story that will hold its readers spellbound until the end.

This was a frustrating book. It was only just good enough to keep me going and I'm not sure finishing it was much of a pay-off.

On the audio side of things, the actress/reader, Natalie Ross, did a very good job. The last audio book I listened to, Disturb by JA Konrath, was annoying due to the poor actor/reader.

    My Thoughts:
I read this almost a year ago and thought I had done a review at that time...but can't find it anywhere. It was a well-written, captivating story with some likable and not so likable characters. The suspense and plot was well crafted. The duo of Danni and Quinn, (maybe it should be a trio since Wolf, the retired police dog is a big part of their team),complement themselves and their interactions are fun even if the romantic part is not the strong point of this thriller. A great first novel in a new series..

Why did I read this !? Well, I was looking for something different from my usual crime fiction, the plot summary looked good, and it seemed like it would be an interesting quick read. The set-up was fairly good, but there were early warning signs. We are told twice very early in the book that shop owner Danni has these incredibly deep and beautiful blue eyes. Sounded like a cheap romance novel to me - I should have stopped right then but I continued. I came upon too many little things that were annoying and caused second thoughts about the prose. A thought like how Danni was "surprised by the pleasure she felt when she heard his voice" and hearing a cop say that he must "work within the law" made me cringe. Who talks like that except characters in a TV show? I've known a lot of priests in my life and I've never heard any of them refer to their parishioners as their "flock"; nor have they ever hinted at anything heard in the confessional. Then there were the protracted and too oft repeated scenes between hero and heroine which went something like this: "Stay here where it will be safe", "but I want to help", "Stay", "Go", "Stay..." etc., etc. Despite the subject and occasional scenes of violence, I found the story rather dull. It seemed little happened and when it did there was little excitement. What's it about? An ancient bust (as in sculpture) that exudes evil and is perceived as a tool to control the world.

A marble bust, an evil spirit and the dead piling up in New Orleans. Can Michael Quinn and Danni Cafferty stop it so that the dead can finally rest? I’ve enjoyed other books by Heather Graham and hoped that this new series would be one of those. The idea of an evil spirit ‘living’ within a statue of itself, and able to have the living kill for it, is not thing new. I was hoping for. The characters were not believable and the dialogue stilted. I want more suspense and intrigue. I had to force myself to finish it.

4 starsDiscription below taken off of Goodreads.Wow a lot of suspense and murders. I guessed some of the mystery but not all of it. I have a feeling that we will see more Cafferty and Quinn in the future. Their is some paranormal in this book. This is one dirty book, They get covered in mud and other junk a few times. Plus their is some love scenes too.Danni's father just died and he tells her to not sell the shop and read the book with the light. Danni finds out that she did not know about a lot of things her father had been doing all his life. Now Danni was supposed to pick up where he had been and making a better world.Michael a PI demanded that Danni step up for the job like her father would and to meet him at 5 and the address. Danni had a customer come and demand that she come to her house and buy a bust that was cursed. She said it killed her husband. That she had to come. Before her customer came to the shop Danni had painted her portait before ever seeing her. When Danni got to the house she found Michael their searching the house for her. Her car was parked in driveway, her housekeeper said she was imside but could not find her. They all searched till they found her in the attic she had hung herself. The bust was missing having a thief steal it at same time she killed herself.Whoever had the bust was soon killed. Even if you were just looking for it you might not survive. The body count kept rising as they trailed the bust. People were willing to pay a lot money for it. They thought they could get power owning it.The characters were a wide range of people, some good and some bad. The settings were creepy for some of them. I don't think I would break into a cemetary at night and go into a crypt too. And a New Orleans one too.Plot line was good. I could not get that interested in it like others of Heather's novels.I was given this ebook to read and asked to give honest review of it by Netgalley.Publisher: Harlequin MIRA (March 26, 2013) 336 pages ASIN: B00ALTVI6K

Danielle "Danni" Cafferty leads a very "normal" life as an artist in New Orleans. She's still grieving the death of her father, Angus Cafferty, and is focused on running the family business, an antique and curio shop. Her life is forever changed when Mrs. Gladys Simon enters her shop and wants to give her an antique marble bust. Mrs. Simon states that the bust is evil, responsible for her husband's suicide and she wants it removed from her home. If that wasn't strange enough, Danni must contend with the appearance of Michael Quinn, a private investigator, who informs her that he used to work with her father and he's willing to help her get the bust as it is imbued with evil. Sadly, when Danni and Quinn arrive at Mrs. Simon's home she is found dead of an apparent suicide and the bust is missing. Danni begins to feel as if she's walked into an episode of the Twilight Zone as things go from strange to downright bizarre in their search to find the mysterious bust before more evil is released and more people die.Let the Dead Sleep is the first in a new series by Ms. Graham. This is a paranormal-mystery-suspense-romance that is shades of the Twilight Zone meets the SyFy channel's Warehouse 13. Danni has inherited more than just her father's store, she has also inherited his sometime partner, Michael Quinn and a mysterious family heirloom called The Book of Truth. Although Danni has some difficulty believing in the so-called "evil" nature of an inanimate object, she quickly becomes a believer after discussions with some of her father's friends. Let the Dead Sleep introduces some interesting characters as Danni and Quinn's support system, such as Father John Ryan, Natasha (a local Voodoo priestess and business owner), Billie McDougall - longtime business associate and friend of Angus Cafferty, Detective Larue of the New Orleans Police Department, and Wolfe - a retired canine police officer. Ms. Graham has crafted another great read with Let the Dead Sleep. The characters are strange, quirky and yet wholly believable. I found Let the Dead Sleep to be a rather fast read and even though I had pretty much guessed the accomplices to the bad guy (no I will not reveal that information, read it for yourself), I still enjoyed this story. If you enjoy mystery-suspense with hints of romance and loads of the paranormal, then you'll definitely want to add Let the Dead Sleep to your reading list.
