About this audiobook

Its cool gulf breezes lured him from a life of danger. Its dark undercurrents threatened to destroy him.

After ten years of living life on the edge, it was hard for Doc Ford to get that addiction to danger out of his system. But spending each day watching the sun melt into Dinkins Bay and the moon rise over the mangrove trees, cooking dinner for his beautiful neighbor, and dispensing advice to the locals over a cold beer lulled him into letting his guard down.

Then Rafe Hollins appeared.

How could he refuse his old friend's request-even if it would put him back on the firing line? Even if it would change forever the life he'd built here on Sanibel Island?

I love the Doc Ford books, but the guy reading doesn't sound like Doc at all! At least not like the one in my head. He makes him sound like a tough guy. But Doc is a scientist first and foremost. Other than that, very enjoyable to revisit these books. It's the only series that even partially satisfies my need for a Travis McGee replacement.

I love Doc Ford novels but could not stand the narrator on this book enough to keep listening. Bummer.

Not what I expect from Doc Ford, but a decent read nevertheless. The title is misleading, as most of this book has absolutely nothing to do with Sanibel or the flats. I don't believe I would be as turned off by this book if it was my first Doc Ford novel, but RWW's writing has gotten so much better over the years that, if comparing them, this one falls pretty flat.Honestly, this could have used another 100 pages or so to flesh out characters as well as the subplots. With such an abrupt ending after opening up so many potential story lines, I was a little disappointed with the quick wrap-up.

Yeah. Good story. Fantastic narration by Dick Hill, whose great characterizations of all the players would have kept my interest even if the story weren’t that great. And there are indeed some pretty colorful characters!

The first in an extremely captivating series. All consistent and individually engaging.

I was raised in Florda, but live in the north now. I miss my Sunshine State. So when a fellow Florida exile recommended this book, I was amenable. It's not my usual. I don't read a lot of action-spy-intrigue stories. But I enjoyed this - that is to say, I stayed up way to late one night to finish. The characters had depth and felt real. The plot was a nice mix of action, science, humor, angst, and history. I'm not running to buy the next in the series, but if I find it cheap, I might pick it up.

Synopsis:Its cool gulf breezes lured him from a life of danger. Over the years I have enjoyed a fair few crime fiction books set in and around Florida. A couple of names spring to mind as being near the top of the list of my favourites – James W. Hall and Carl Hiaasen. Both of these I have followed fairly closely, maybe not reading every book as it came out, but acquiring them later, to add to the ever-increasing pile on Mount TBR.Possibly, there could be another name to add to the list. I say possibly, because I’ve only just read the first title in a series that to date runs to 20 books. A friend tells me the wheels fall off at or around book 12, in her opinion, but I’ve enjoyed this one enough to want to hunt down the 2nd and I’ll stick with author White and Doc Ford for a while longer.Ford is an ex-CIA agent now out of the business. He’s living his life at a slower pace, getting by using his skills as a marine biologist to supply samples to schools and colleges throughout the country. He’s formed some easy friendships with the locals without giving away too much of himself.Cue mayhem; a call for help from his best childhood friend, Rafe Hollins rips apart his sedentary lifestyle. Hollins’ son has been kidnapped and he wants to enlist Doc’s help in recovering him, in exchange for the merchandise Hollins stole from them. When Doc goes to meet Rafe he finds a corpse swinging in the breeze instead. With his friend gone and his young son missing Ford starts looking into Hollins associates and past. As the plot develops, Ford’s investigation uncovers corruption in Florida, smuggled artefacts and he suffers a trip back to the same Central American war-zone that was the scene of his previous retirement.Fairly fast-paced, interesting and at times informative, I enjoyed reading Sanibel Flats. There’s a likeable cast of characters that White has assembled around the Doc that I’ll look forward to meeting again.4 from 5I bought my copy on Amazon UK.

My father had been recommending Randy Wayne White's Doc Ford series to me for quite some time and I finally decided to give White a try. Superb writing and excellent characters, it goes to show that I am never too old to listen to my father. I am looking forward to the next book in the Doc Ford series.

Based on other reviews I was looking forward to reading this series. I opted for the audio version and the narrator was making me crazy. None of the voices worked for me and not too far in I had to call it quits.
The story seemed fun though, I may download and read it.

Reread, previously read it in the 90's around the time of it's release. Something like the Travis Mcgee novels updated for the 90's.

Doc Ford discovers his friend hanging from a tree and has to try to rescue the dead man's son from South America. There is action, suspense, a mystery involved in this story. I liked the characters.

This is the first of at least four and maybe five Doc Ford mystery series. Doc is a marine biologist in Florida but he has a past. He's done with that past now and living out a laid back laissez faire life on Sanibel Flats. But, he past calls him one day. His old friend, Rafe Hollins calls in distressed because after Rafe kidnapped his son from his ex-wife, terrorists kidnapped Rafe's son from Rafe. Doc must now re-enter his past. There's a little Hiassen here and a little of all the other Florida writers, but White also has something that's all his own. His second Doc Ford is out of print but I'm hoping his new publisher is going to re-print them. I'd hate to miss one.

First in the Doc Ford series, but need to read more. Mystery set in Florida, when childhood friend of Doc Ford calls for help and then gets killed. Doc and his friend Tomlinson set off to rescue the deceased friend’s child being held for ransom. Interesting characters, but sometimes the central plot gets lost. Still fun to listen to.

The introduction of Doc Ford, a retired NSA agent and a marine biologist and his best friend from high school Tomlinson, who still looks and talks like a 60's hippie. Not only do we follow them on their first adventure but learn a little about the history of the Myan's as well. A very good read.

This is a great series! I really enjoy the characters, Marion Ford aka Doc & his weed smoking friend Tomlinson. He cracks me up. If you like audiobooks, then you have to listen to the audio version of this series to get the full experience. I've listened to every book and the narrator is just fantastic. He really makes Doc & Tomlinson come to life.

This started out interesting enough, but ended up w/a couple too many balls in the air and a little long on clichés that I don't enjoy all that much. Also, Ford's notions about "promiscuous" women were annoying, especially coming from a guy whose only apparent claim to sexual purity was not paying for it. Manly men are virile, women are just slutty. Man, that shit never gets old [eyeroll]

Smart engaging thriller with a heart and a brain-- the heart is the community gathered around the marina on Sanibel Island, and the brain is Doc Ford's knowledge of the complex eco-system of the Florida everglades and Gulf of Mexico.Lifted far above the average by excellent writing, the Doc Ford novels are compulsively readable. The plot of this novel had **too much** going on, enough for two books, and linking them together strains credulity.Strongly recommended.

I think I was expecting a bit too much from these based on reviews of the author in general. A bit slow in parts, a bit too fast in others, but it did end with e wanting to read the next installment in the near future.

This is the first in the Doc Ford series. My sister (who is not a reader - however is an excellent fisherman) suggested this to me and I have been a Randy Wayne White fan since. Twists and turns to satisfy mystery readers, adventure to satisfy thriller readers, humor. If you have ever hung out at a marina, you will identify with the characters. I was left feeling as though I know these folks. (characters continue to develop as the series continues. I recommend that you begin the series with this book, even if you do not usually read in sequence.
