      Such a wonderful story of a kitten who finds a home in the public library and becomes the town mascot. What a great story! Love the fact it is a simple telling of a kitten/cat/senior cat without swear words, violence or sex. A real story for children, adults and seniors.

      It's an easy read, and so I was able to speed up the audio as fast as it would go because used to reading a lot more intricate books. This one is easy enough for an older kid to read and good if you need a very light read and want to read something a little heartfelt.

      This is the perfect feel good story! One freezing cold morning in Spencer, Iowa, Vicki Myron, found a tiny kitten clinging to life in the Spencer Public Library's overnight drop box. Vicki & the rest of the staff adopt the kitten & named him Dewey & he went on to be adopted by the whole town & after a while, the world.This is a lovely, engaging, easy to read book, perfect for this time of year. The story is the sort that just plods along at it's own pace, but it's a lovely pace. I loved reading about the staff at the library & the various battles they had with Dewey, The Battle of the Rubber Bands was my favourite! I also loved reading about the different relationships Dewey had with the staff members & the community. The thing I loved most about the story though, apart from the Dewey stories was reading about Spencer's history. Vicki Myron engages you from the first page, from the first page you feel like you're stepping into Spencer. Being a librarian herself, Vicki's skilful 'storytime' style, is lovely to read. Her descriptions of Spencer & the surrounding farms & cornfields are really vivid.To me, it wasn't 'unput-downable' but I pretty much finished it in three days so you can make your own conclusions about that one!All in all, if you need a bit of cheering up, pick up this book, even if you're not an animal lover it doesn't disappoint.

      Synopsis: This is a non-fiction book about a kitten named Dewey who was found in the book return box of the library and went on to become a famous library cat. My Rating:4/5I very much enjoyed reading this book though it is definitely intended for a young audience. If you enjoy the books written by James Herriot you will probably enjoy this because it gave me very similar vibes. Also, Dewey has a whole series of picture books based on him that my kids were enchanted by. They are still a bit young for this non-fiction but they did like the beautiful pictures in this book and it allowed them then to go read the younger books which where more on their level. This book was very moving and emotional. I cried at multiple points.

      I picked up a digital copy of this book on a lark; as a cat and library lover I figured it would be 2 bucks well spent even if it wasn't great. I must say I was bowled over by how well the authors used Dewey as a window through which to view a small American mid-western community's struggles with economic and personal challenges. No outlandish claims are made here. Dewey didn't turn the town around singled-pawed. But he did bring people in right when this farming community was suffering from the worst of the farm crisis of the 80s and needed to know that their local library could be there for them with resume building tools, career change guides, and home repair books when the cost of hiring a repairman or buying a replacement was out of the question. This is also the story of how animals help us connect with each other. How the usual workplace dramas were dialed back when Dewey was in the picture and how the librarian that was his primary caretaker knew that when her teenage daughter seemed light years away she could always count on a Sunday visit to feed Dewey to bring them together, if only for the length of a car ride. The overwhelming impressions left with the reader are that this is an excellent snapshot of small town America at a unique time in its history and an excellent biography of an abandoned cat so talented at making people feel like family that he makes the reader feel like family, too.Summary: A well-told tale of a small town in crisis and of an unwanted cat gifted at making people feel wanted.

      I have to admit right off that I am a cat person and that I am in library school. So it wasn't hard for me to just fall in love with Dewey. I highly enjoyed this book and found it to be a quick read. If you are not a cat person, you probably won't find this book as interesting and wonderful as I did. Further, I think this would be a wonderful book to read with a child/pre-teen.

      A Heartwarming true story you will fall in love with, even if you are a dog lover, the story of Dewey will enlighten you and remind you of the true purpose of pet ownership and why we love our pets.Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility (for a cat), and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most.I was chosen to review Dewey and was very happy with the opportunity the number one reason is I am truly not a cat lover and I wanted to give my heart completely to this book and provide an unbiased review. My 9 year old son noticed the book when he came from school one day and immediately asked if he could read it. He was familiar with Dewey's story and I was totally surprised. I told him he would have to wait until I was done and he was obviously very excited. I was captivated by Dewey from the start and found myself immersed in the words of the librarian Vicky Vernon and her life in Spencer and the joy Dewey brought to so many people in his lifetime. At first surprised that a cat could change so many lives and then as I read further I could see why. I also became aware that Vicky was truly chosen to have this special cat in her life and to share Dewey's story with the world. God works in mysterious ways and I do believe Dewey spirit was an angel that came to Spencer on that cold morning, a test from God to see how many lives the magical love of Dewey could touch. I fell in love with Spencer and it's community, that little town in Iowa, the setting of the story. I found myself sharing in the joy and the sadness of the relationship between Vicky and Dewey as I read. I am truly looking forward to getting my hands on a copy and reading Dewey's newest title Dewey's Nine Lives, released October 2010.
