    Lincoln Peirce began creating comics in the 6th grade (just like Big Nate!). He went on to teach art at a New York City High School. Lincoln created the cartoon-strip character Big Nate in 1991, naming the character after a nickname he gave his older brother as a kid. He lives in Portland, Maine in the US and as well as creating Big Nate comic strips and books, he hosts a local radio show.

      Middle schoolers will enjoy the funny situations Nate gets himself into. I worry, though, that this book seemed to somewhat normalize bullying and making fun of other people.

      This was a humorous middle grades book. I found myself laughing out loud many times at the events (some of which were crude). Nate could be obnoxious sometimes, but I still found myself liking him. The audiobook narrator went all in trying to capture Nate's personality and I think he did a great job. I found him much more relatable through Fred Berman's presentation. The author captured the essence of a middle-school underachieving boy. I particularly loved the ending when Nate found out how he had "surpassed all others". It was very true to character and I think my boys would enjoy this story and be able to relate to the character's feelings.

      I brought home some books from my school library to read over break so I could be a better librarian for them. I fell in love with Big Nate! So fun, and so funny! I want to read more of this series.

      Blending comic-like drawings and text, Lincoln Peirce humorously chronicles a day in the life of Nate, an overly confident middle-schooler, who believes he is destined for greatness. Peirce captures the humor and the humiliation of middle school as Nate attempts to fulfill his fortune while navigating through a school day filled with mean teachers, pop quizzes and poetry. Nate is a clever, likeable character and readers will root for him even as all his attempts end with detention slips. While clearly riding the coattails of the success of Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid - Kinney even has a blurb on the cover - this is a natural read-alike and a good choice for reluctant readers. Book 2 in the series, Big Nate Strikes Again, is due out in October.

      This series is one of the best series their is if you like funny books then you will like this book it is not as funny as diary of a wimpy kid but it is still a good book and is one of the best books in the ever written

      Nate is a funny and over confident middle schooler who manages to break the school record by receiving a detention for every period in one school day. Along the way we meet different school characters-- teachers and principals, friends and enemies-- who keep the story moving quickly and the mood funny and light. Some very funny words and cartoons-- Big Nate and all the other books in the series are sure to be very popular with kids 8 and up. Very Diary of a Wimpy Kid-ish, but this is a lesser product in terms of writing and style --no subtly here--and i agree with the reviewer who observed that adults and kids both love Diary of a Wimpy Kid but Big Nate is only for kids. And the kids will LOVE him.

      This was actually my brother's book. It looked...interesting, so I started to read it. It's kinda like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. It was funny and weird, my kinda book. :)

      This is another book along the lines of the Wimpy Kids Series. A lot of kids will identify with Nate. He is kind of squirrely, (I can think of one student like him right now), constantly finding himself unprepared and often in trouble. Nate things he's going to have a really great day but it turns out you can't always trust what is on that little slip of paper in a fortune cookie. I've been teaching my students about foreshadowing. I believe the beginning of this book would be great for teaching that concept.

      My son would like me to give it 5 stars but I am giving this 3.5 stars. The book is very similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The book is funny and it did have a good plot. Nate received a fortune cookie that said he would "Surpass all Others" and he did and that was funny. The problem that I have with this book and a lot of other current popular children's books is how disrespectful Nate is to adults. This book could have been just as funny even if it was toned down a bit. My son however, loved this book and has requested the next in the series

      Jake's Review: Mom, this book is awesome, it reminds me a lot of those Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. Can I start reading the next book tonight (mom's note: nice try its 9:45 -- get thee to bed NOW). This book is hilarious, I have to lend it to Brian, he doesn't really like books, but I think he will like this one. It's got the perfect amount of story and sic (this is a good thing old people -- it's our version of Cool) pictures. They totally have to make this into a movie. I like Nate, he is sort of sarcastic like Daddy but in a nicer way and he gets in trouble as much as I do (Mom's note: ahh Jake, that is not a good thing btw). Jake's Rating: 9.5/10Mom's Review: Wait a sec -- this book is written about Jake (Jake's note: nice Mom). I can see why Jake enjoyed this one. Filled with witty writing, sarcastic kids and clueless adults, what's not to like for a 9 yr old boy --- o.k., Mom totally thought it was funny too. But I think we all know by now, that I am not your typical Mom. This will be one the middle school kids will really get into, sort of on the same lines as Diary of a Wimpy Kid. A good mix of writing and illustrations to keep the kids interested, and fabulous for reluctant readers. I recommend that all middle school and public libraries get a couple of copies of this one, I think it will be a huge hit. I look forward to reading more about Big Nate, his buddies and his hippie Dad. BTW, when I was asking Jake about the book before we wrote up his review. I was asking him what his parents were like -- and he goes well Nate only has a Dad, you know not every family has a Mom and Dad -- families are made up of all kinds of groups. Some kids are raised by their grandparents or by two mom's or two dad's -- think about that before you ask that type of question (yup Mom being lectured to by 9 yr old boy)Mom's Rating: 9/10We received this from Harper Collins Children's (From OLA conference)

      A new series with appeal for Wimpy Kid fans, boys and reluctant readers, with plenty of humorous cartoon drawings and comic panels inserted throughout the text. Nate has a penchant for getting himself into trouble, whether intentionally or not (mostly he has a boyish lack of control over his actions). During a school day when his fortune cookie predicts "today you will surpass all others," he tries to come up with ways to make the prediction come true. Instead, in the process, he manages to rack up seven detention slips. Happily for Nate and his fortune, that number turns out to be a record at the school. "Big Nate" doesn't have the smart, sly humor of "Wimpy Kid" but the intended audiences will eat it up anyway.

      Big Nate was great fun, even for this grown-up. Diary of a Wimpy Kid fans will eat it up! As for the inevitable comparison with DWK, I found Big Nate to be wittier and more well written.

      This is a book for poeple who would want to have a laugh. It is basicaly the same as diary of a wimpy kid.If you reed this book you are garentied to like it.the best part about this book Big Nate by Lincon Preace is that read about how much his teacher heats him. everything he does is falowed up by a pink slip.he is like one of those kids that that does not kare. the things th didnt realy make me want to read it constantly is that it was not in color.he also dident diserve some of the detention slips. i also liked it becase it was not sooper long .and if you are going to read somthing funny i sugjest this book.

      Nate is quite the trouble-maker but this middle schooler gives a good perspective of his life. When he gets a fortune cookie saying "You will surpass all others" he gets a bit confident and ends up with five different detension slips, landing him a spot in school history, surpassing all others in the numbers of detentions he received in a day.A quick read, but a bit more risky than Diary of a Wimpy Kid so I won't be putting it into my 2nd/3rd grade class.

      Big Nate is about an over confident kid. he recived a fortan teller that said that he would surpass all the others today. he tries to find how he will surpass by many differnt ways. they each got him dition. even at lunch he got detion because he was making a mess of green beans. he dicided that he had to eat the most green beans in ten minitues. this spayed all the juice at the princble. he got a detion in every class. he surpassed everyone by the amout of deteions in one day.this book was very similar to dairy of the wimpy kid. it had an okay story line. this book is for younger kids about 7 or 8. not for 13 year olds to easy. i recomed this book to a 5th grader.
