Reviews for The Conviction to Lead
41 ratings6 reviews
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Fresh insight to leadership principles. These are principles and keys that are practical and vital to the success of a leader. Soon to be a classic.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What is the essence of leadership? What is it that makes one person an effective leader and another a person who takes an organization to an early grave? According to Albert Mohler the essential characteristic to effective leadership is conviction. It is clearly knowing what you and your organization stand for and then always acting in ways that are driven by that conviction. The Conviction to Lead is a very readable book in which Mohler takes that idea of conviction as the driving force of good leadership and then explores it in various dimensions of a leader's personality and task. This includes things such as understanding worldview, the importance of reading to leadership and being an effective communicator. Mohler knows well the task of which he speaks, having served for 20 years as the President of Southern Seminary, and having relied on the principles he writes of while serving in that office. I found this to be a very readable and practical book, with the concepts being applicable to organizations that are very small as well as very large.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a great way to view biblical leadership. Albert clearly explains the ways we should be in our Christian walk as a leader
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Those who have read and listened to Al Mohler before may be surprised by The Conviction to Lead. Mohler leaves behind the theological realm long enough to share insights he has garnered from his time at the helm of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. When Mohler was appointed as president at SBTS, he was done so as the result of a larger movement in Southern Baptist Life to move its seminaries, institutions, and churches back to their conservative theological roots. Mohler's task was monumental as SBTS was perhaps the most liberal institution in Southern Baptist Life. Mohler stood on his convictions and has led SBTS (in a relatively short period of time) to be a bastion of conservative theological education. Such a turnaround is unprecedented. Liberal institutions don't move conservative. Ever. Except, by the grace of God, Southern Seminary. And Mohler's leadership was a huge part in that transformation.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Foundational leadership for anyone in a leadership role…whether leading a large corporation, leading a small group, leading your home or even leading yourself. Great principles from a Christian perspective that no Christian should lose sight of.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Of the making of books on leadership, there is no end. It has almost become its own genre. This is not a bad thing, for whether the leader is made or born, all need help with the assignment. Albert Mohler has entered the discussion with his latest book, The Conviction to Lead. Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is not immediately known as a John Maxwell or Steven Covey type of leadership guru. He is best known for his theologically astute commentary on culture and Christianity. However, in The Conviction to Lead, he has given an outstanding treatment on leadership from a Christian perspective. In the realm of pastoral ministry, evangelicalism is often divided into opposing ideas. There is the entrepreneurial pastor/leader that sees his main task as leading and building a church in ways similar to a CEO of a successful corporation. Others view pastoral responsibility in the shepherd/theologian model, eschewing leadership as a secular pursuit beneath the dignity of the pulpit ministry. Dr. Mohler sees that there is value to be gleaned from both models. His goal is “to redefine Christian leadership so that it is inseparable from passionately held beliefs, and to motivate those who are deeply committed to truth to be ready for leadership” (p.20).This book is a “must read” for everyone in any position of leadership in a Christian organization. That it comes from one who has over 2 decades of significant leadership under his belt and who is also one of the premier theologians of our day is commendation enough.
