About this audiobook
This bold undertaking covers Western theatre from ancient Greece to the present day. It traces the development of dramatic art through the miracle plays, the great Shakespearean period, Molière and Racine in France, Goethe in Germany, through the nineteenth century and the main movements in the twentieth century. It is illustrated by numerous examples of differing styles, with some historical recordings as well and excerpts from nearly fifty plays – a fascinating journey. It is written by David Timson, the British actor and director who features extensively on Naxos AudioBooks in both roles.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book for tc and a few other steps in my life
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5excellent overview of the history of the theatre. Of course, when something has to cover so much, it may appear to be a little superficial, but this history does cover all the main developments and can point the reader into further areas of exploration if they want. An excellent introduction and highly recommended.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Clear, lively overview of Western theater with a bias towards England--often with insightful analysis. Regrettably, other historic theater developments (Sanskrit, Kabuki, etc.) aren't mentioned. Jacobi, no surprise, is a witty, expressive narrator, and the brief, dramatized excerpts with other actors are excellent. Listen at 1.2X for an engaging 4 hour summary of theater from 5th century BC Athens to London in 2000 CE.
