About this audiobook

Special Agent Dagny Gray is smart, athletic, and fearless. She’s also fragile, depressed, and anorexic. If she doesn’t get healthy soon, the FBI will drop her—and she’ll never have a chance to end the crime spree of the so-called “bubble gum thief.”

It all started with the theft of a pack of gum, and the ominous note he left behind: THIS IS MY FIRST CRIME. MY NEXT WILL BE BIGGER. Every two weeks, he delivers on this pledge, committing a bigger crime, and promising that the next will be even worse. When petty theft gives way to bloody murder, the stakes become clear. He may have begun with the smallest crime possible, but he’s building toward the biggest crime imaginable.

There’s a method to the gum thief’s madness, and Special Agent Dagny Gray knows she can figure it out…if the Bureau will let her. But will it be in time to prevent the cataclysmic finale of his escalating spree?

It begins with the theft of a pack of gum and a card left behind stating “This is My First Crime, the Next Will Be Bigger”. As the crimes become bigger and include murder, the FBI becomes involved and Agent Dagny Gray wants to solve it and kill him before his crimes grow to an intensifying catastrophe. This is a large novel, and I was intrigued by why the theft of the gum would snowball into such as it did. It took a while to pick up speed and although it becomes a little wordy at times, I found that the action and mystery made it that much more exciting. It held my attention to the very end, which to me makes it a good story.

The Bubble Gum Thief by Jeff MillerThomas & MercerDecember 4, 2012ASIN: BOO7RZ0716426 pagesThis is my first crime. My next will be bigger.“This is my first crime. My next will be bigger.” So begins The Bubble Gum Thief. This message is found on a card to which a stolen stick of gum is taped. What follows is a series of crimes that escalate is horror and body count. Solving the crimes falls to FBI agent Dagny Gray, who has a handful of personal issues, not the least of which is severe anorexia. Dagny must fight through her medical problem, an FBI bureaucracy that hinders her every step, and a serial killer that is increasingly cleaver and brazen. Well written and fast paced and populated with interesting characters, especially Dagny who is well drawn and likable. A good read.DP Lyle, award-winning author of the Dub Walker and Samantha Cody thriller series

I very much enjoyed "The Bubblegum Thief" despite the fact that I found the main character Federal Agent Dagny Gray frustrating, due to her inclination to limit her calories to the point of making herself physically ill. While I have compassion for anorexics, bulemics and/or any obsessive personalities,it was difficult to sympathize with someone who had so much going for her including a loving boyfriend, yet still refused to see herself through his eyes, until he sculpted a beautiful statue of her. Even then, it took a horrible loss for her to stop focusing on her destructive tendencies and focus on the crimes being committed. And the author then simply put her anorexia behind her and described her eating in scene after scene. Too tidy and far too easy a solution, I think. So while it bothered me, I still expected a more logical resolution to her issues, and I found myself wondering if Miller's intention was to make her a slightly annoying person. Other than that the book moved forward nicely, and the other characters were well-developed. I would pick up another book by Jeff Miller. If you enjoy a fast-moving mystery, with lots of characters and a rather complex plot, you'll like "The Bubblegum Thief."
