About this audiobook
It starts with a double homicide. Because of the high profiles of the victims—a politically connected socialite and his glamorous fiancée—the mayor of San Francisco herself demands that a high-ranking detective be put on the case. And so Abe Glitsky is thrust into the controversial investigation.
Dan Cuneo, the officer already working the case, is immediately wary of Glitsky and doesn’t hide his distrust. Matters are made worse when Cuneo starts to focus on his primary suspect—who also happens to be an old girlfriend of Dismas Hardy. For Hardy and Glitsky, this is an awkward and uncomfortable coincidence. But for Cuneo, it’s proof positive of collusion, and yet another instance of Glitsky cheating with his insider friends and cronies.
Convinced that Hardy’s client is the wrong suspect, Glitsky breaks ranks within the police department to continue his own investigation. As Hardy’s murder trial builds to its stunning conclusion, Glitsky’s search for the truth does more than fuel suspicion against the two men. It reveals a trail of deception that leads beyond San Francisco, where exposing desperate secrets can be the most deadly offense.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed this book, but am giving it a mixed review. The only distracting thing is the failure of both cops and defense attorney to adequately investigate the case before trial. The things that were investigated during the trial would never have been missed in real life, particularly in a high-profile situation. Nevertheless, determining motivation was very interesting. In addition, there was a lot about the pleasures and minefields of loving marriages, which you don't see too often in murder mysteries.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Very good read. Exciting and detailed and excellent insight in court room action. Perhaps a bit too detailed and long for my tastes but a very good read nevertheless. He paints some very visual scenes with his descriptions. I plan to try him again real soon.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The Motive starts off with a fire at a Victorian house where a prominent San Francisco businessman and his girlfriend are killed, not from the fire, but from bullets to the head. The businessman turns out to be a friend of the mayor. When the case stalls, the mayor hands it over to Abe Glitsky. Meanwhile the deceased’s daughter-in-law hires Dismas Hardy to represent her. She happens to be an old flame of Dismis, something that brings tension between he and his wife. This starts a winding investigation that involves with the auto-towing industry. The novel has many twists and turns along with a good bit of intrigue along the way. Glitsky and Hardy are ostensibly on opposite sides, but as expected they wind up teaming up. There was nothing earth-shattering about the plot or the characterization. It’s not a novel that will resonate long after you read it, but it fairly entertaining, and not a bad read.Carl Alves – author of Blood Street
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Excellent book! It kept my interest trying to figure out 'who dunnit.' Not your typical ending, and I liked that. David Colacci does a great job narrating.
