    The Happy Prince
    The tale of a statue of a prince how he teaches generosity and the gift of love to a small sparrow who becomes his friend.

    The Nightingale and the Rose
    A young Student is infatuated by the daughter of a Professor. She promises to dance with him till dawn at the Prince's ball if the Student will bring her a red rose. But in his garden there are no red roses. The Nightingale, who night after night romantically sings of such love as she believes she now sees demonstrated, is moved to provide the red rose so as to facilitate the love between the Student and the young woman.

    The Selfish Giant
    A Selfish Giant has a beautiful garden he refuses to share with the children in his village. Spring refuses to visit the giant's garden until he meets a little boy who teaches him how to love others.

    The Devoted Friend
    A young lad is befriended by a prosperous farmer, who takes advantage of the boy's generosity and only gives him broken promises in return, in addition, the farmer says horrible things about the boy to others. The young lad's last act of kindness costs him dearly and the farmer changes his tune.

    The Remarkable Rocket
    The king's son was to be married and there was to be a superb fireworks display for the event. All the rockets and different kinds of fireworks were excited about their big moment. The Rocket was a real better than thou type...very arrogant and deprecating to the other fireworks with much going ons about who was the most important,etc. The rocket always taking the road that he was indeed, the best of the lot. All the fireworks argued and fought over being the best with the Rocket asserting that he was.

    Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish poet and playwright who rose to global fame in the 1880s as a larger-than-life public persona with plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband, and Lady Windermere's Fan. The author of countless brilliant epigrams that form part of our popular lexicon, he was sentenced to two years of hard labor in prison for having relations with men, which ruined his reputation and career. Upon his release he exiled himself in France, where he died penniless. Today Wilde is celebrated as a courageous crusader for free expression, gay love, and anyone oppressed by hypocritical conventions.

      The stories of Oscar Wilde speak for themselves but I love this beautiful edition illustrated by Michael Hauge.

      Richer, more sophisticated, and more valuable than Andersen's stories, but having some things in common with them, such as a pervasive theme of humility and sacrifice as service to God. I read some of these as a child, but re-reading them as an adult is a whole 'nother experience, and one I recommend. This edition would be the one I'd recommend, as the illustrations are indeed very pretty and the font is clear, the pages heavy, etc. Otoh, I'm sure you can read the tales for free from Project Gutenberg, too, if you aren't as lucky as I to find this in the library.

      I picked this wonderful book up while in Ireland for vaction. What can you say, Wilde wrote some of the best Fairy Tales for children ever. Beautiful book, buy a copy and give it to your children, better yet read it to them!

      Oscar Wilde was wide-ranging in the literary forms he engaged and I've enjoyed many of his other works, but his fairy tales don't strike me as being one of his strengths. He was no Hans Anderson, not even J.K. Rowling (see: Beedle). But if you're looking for a purely Christian slant in classics for children, you can't do better than this.(4/5) The Happy Prince - A golden statue has opportunity to help his city with a bird's assistance. It's all about charity. Saw the 1974 animation as a kid, so the nostalgia won it some points. (3.5/5) The Nightingale and the Rose - A nightingale selflessly assists a young wooer. Love isn't love unless you're willing to die for it. Most kids won't grasp this without assistance. (3.5/5) The Selfish Giant - spring won't return to the giant's garden after he ejects a bunch of hooligans. Embrace Christianity for everlasting life. Made little impression on me when I was young, and none at all now. (3/5) The Devoted Friend - A tale about give-and-take that's entirely open to misinterpretation, thus the awkward framing story about the water rat.(3.5/5) The Remarkable Rocket - A supremely self-centered firecracker leaves no impression on anyone. A strange note to end on, but there it is.

      It's hard to imagine a better reading of selections from the brilliant collection of Wilde's "The Happy Prince and Other Stories". Since the first time I heard one of these stories read by Sir John on the radio, his voice is the voice I hear in my head when I read anything from "The Happy Prince". Hearing these recordings is like having your grandfather tell you stories by the fireplace at night. If you can find this spoken word treasure, buy it!Os.

      So sad - so sad! Don't cry when reading the Happy Prince, because he is a statue with a heart, and that's a rare thing indeed.
