About this audiobook
He came to England to rest. He calls himself Michael Shaeffer, says he's a retired American businessman. He goes to the races, dates a kinky aristocrat, and sleeps with dozens of weapons. Ten years ago it was different. Then, he was the Butcher's Boy, the highly skilled mob hit man who pulled a slaughter job on some double-crossing clients and started a mob war. Ever since, there's been a price on his head.
Now, after a decade, they've found him. The Butcher's Boy escapes back to the States with more reasons to kill. Until the odds turn terrifyingly against him...until the Mafia, the cops, the FBI, and the damn Justice Department want his hide...until he's locked into a cross-country odyssey of fear and death that could tear his world to pieces.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Author’s descriptions of practical details one might not have thought of, eg how to reduce a list of thousands (maybe) of suspects to 4.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Thomas Perry is a master storyteller. This book is well plotted with the characters realistic. I thoroughly enjoyed his first novel The Butchers Boy and wasn’t disappointed by the follow up but found it taut and exciting from beginning to end.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Butcher's Boy book two. Another great tale by Perry.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Our hero is an assassin, but otherwise quite a likable fellow in this fast moving and well written thriller.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Stopped reading at p121, no empathy for our protagonist. Lots of jumping around amongst the cast of characters meant to propel the story forward, which for this perhaps, dull witted reader, only spelled fatigue
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Stop! If you haven't read Perry's Butcher's Boy, read it first. Then grab this one. Ten years after the first book ends, the Butcher's Boy, the world's most successful and feared hit man, has been in hiding in England. He's been careful but a woman arrives about the same time his guard relaxes just a bit and he's recognized. Elizabeth Waring of the Justice Department, who's career was made with the first chase of the Butcher's Boy, is back as well. As usual, Perry's attention to detail and careful character crafting makes this book the excellent read that it is.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is even better than the first in the series (Butcher's Boy) and, while the story does stand alone, I'd suggest reading the first book before this one to fully appreciate the main character's situation. Without that "history" you won't like him nearly as much as you could... and if you don't like the main character of this book, you'll probably not like the book very much since he's really the only "feature".If you liked any of Block's Keller books, you'll like this one just as much... they are so similar in tone and pacing that they could have been written by the same author. Sleeping Dogs is more modern than Butcher's Boy, but not as modern as Hitman so, while there are car phones, there still aren't any cells around, and that does affect the story.I wish there were more books like this out there: with calm, cool and collected protagonists getting "justice" the only way they know how without the author trying to stog morals down my throat at the same time.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sequel to Butchers Boy. He comes out of hiding, and the crime bosses should have just left him alone!
