Author

Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson was born on 13 November 1850, changing his second name to ‘Louis’ at the age of eighteen. He has always been loved and admired by countless readers and critics for ‘the excitement, the fierce joy, the delight in strangeness, the pleasure in deep and dark adventures’ found in his classic stories and, without doubt, he created some of the most horribly unforgettable characters in literature and, above all, Mr. Edward Hyde.

Certainly a classic - Treasure Island first captivated me as a child, and did not fail to hold my attention now as an adult. Like many books I've read again as I've grown older, there were things I understood better, plot twists I could see but that nonetheless took me on a wildly exciting adventure like the one of my youth. I think this will always be a favorite for me - I love pirates, and the ones in Treasure Island were my very first taste of them. Not the ninnies or idiots of more recent pirate movie standards, these are true swashbuckling terrors, and I will always admire Jim for his adventurous spirit.

Disclaimer: I review books on how they stand alone without regards to anyone’s personal views about the author. I review based upon readability and how the book affects my life for good, and less upon literary style. This is an interesting read and does teach the qualities of both doing your duty and keeping promises. Jim, the main character boy, is loyal to his word. The story also shows the bad affects of drinking alcohol and being selfish. There are plenty of those types in the story, including the famous Long John Silver.

Pleasantly surprised by this novel. Thought it was a kids story, but it can get pretty dark in places. Although it has dated, still worth a read.

I can remember trying to read this as a child but found it quite hard to get into, but trying again later on when I was older I loved it. I re-read it again recently and once again became totally absorbed. I love Pirates!

A nice adventure book...one I cannot believe I haven't read before!! Long John Silver was well developed and very well balanced, and I am a sucker for an antagonist with a heart! The characters, though not fleshed out or fully developed, are enticing and realistic. This is, by far, a pure adventure story, though the adventure is slow in rolling itself out. The simple suspense is delightful, and the justice dispensed to those of blacker hearts seems reasonable and natural. Long John Silver's disappearance at the end definitely leaves a wide window for future legends, ideas and adventures to form themselves.

This is the first time I've read this book and I loved it. I had to do a lot of looking up of nautical terms to get a picture in my head of what was going on, but the story is gripping and well told. I'm also a fan of colorful dialogue and this is a great one for that. (It's also the obvious inspiration for all stereotypical pirate lingo still used today.) And I also wouldn't call this "Juvenile Fiction." Most kids today wouldn't understand a word of it...and you may lay to it!

I had heard it was one of the world's great adventures, but I always thought it would be a "little boys book." It turned out to be highly nuanced and can probably be enjoyed by all ages and genders because it works on many levels. The adventure itself is a great hook, and you don't want to stop reading at the end of each chapter, but it turns out that it's all really about loyalty and what that means, and about how to survive a journey with pirates and still keep one's honor. Long John Silver is one of the great complex villains/foils I've encountered in fiction, not a caricature like the brilliantly colorful villains in Dickens, and not so one-dimensional as the sadistic evildoers of other contemporary children's authors like Brian Jacques and Jerry Spinelli. He's as charming and compelling to the reader as he is to the hero-narrator. The illustrations in this edition are good, too.

This is an awesome novel! It manages to be a great adventure story, and a great Victorian period piece, without feeling dated or forced. Yes, the hero has things go unnaturally well for him, but it makes perfect sense in the story. It's a great read, and a great young adult read. The abridged versions, really, should be shot for the lame imposters they are.

And, on top of being a great story, this is where the whole pirate genre started, everything from buried treasure tropes, to the rules of "gentlemen of fortune." Every pirate aficionado should give this a gander.

The shortest form of this book which I ever read. Classic story about pirates, treasures on an uninhabited island, adventures. The first time I read this story when I was 10-year-old, right now I back to this book to improve my English, but I prefer whole story, so I hope- I'll read them soon.

As a mother of two boys, I felt that I should read this classic. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy it very much. It wasn't that women aren't present. It wasn't the language (though I did have some issues with getting into the style). It was the pace. For what is heralded as a boys' pirate life book, this had very little action. It felt as though the prelude was given all the pages; the story I would have been interested to read was given only a breath. Now, I love character development. I will argue that knowing the character is generally more important that knowing the plot of any given book, but Treasure Island seems to max out on this theory for me.

An adventures book that manages to be crafted as a masterpiece. The utlimate teens book. Beautifully lyric passages that made me, for the first time, realize the beauty of the English language.

A very great classic, and no one needs me to inform them of this fact. Of the many, many pleasures this book holds in store, let me just mention the riveting chapter on Israel Hands, a character based on the real-life second in command to Blackbeard himself, whose creepy conversation, struggle with , and pursuit of Jim Hawkins ends with a deadly encounter on the mizzen-mast. Even now, many years later, I recall my own instinctive recoil and shudder as the knife found its home.

Grandly entertaining story of a a young man's acquistion of a treasure map and the ensuing treasure hunt. Not as engaging as it could have been due to the way the story is segmented, but still a great read I enjoyed very much.

A copy of this text is in my personal library. Actually in a junior high theatre class I'm teaching they are reading the musical version of this text. I wanted to read it to see the way it compared to the script. The reason I gave it three stars is I believe certain portions of this text contained words and phrases students would struggle comprehending. I wouldn't make it a class wide assignment, reading the book independently, but rather read it as a whole class. I would love to use this book as a read aloud and then select a scene from the play to act out. I think it would work well for readers theatre.

Robert Louis Stevenson s classic Treasure Island is the adventure story of Jim Hawkins who on a voyage for buried treasure finds himself in the middle of a mutiny with some of the nastiest pirates to ever sail the seven seas, including the pirate Long John Silver. I think this would be a wonderful book for a young reluctant reader, particularly one who is interested in a fast paced adventure plot. I particularly liked the characters of Jim Hawkins—the observer of all- and the complex Long John Silver (though he is a pirate he has moments of goodness). 3 ½ out of 5 stars.

Now, I realize this was written for young boys, but, as far as classics go, I was underwhelmed. I just wanted SO much more from it. Even the ending was a little disappointing. I just wanted... I don't know what I wanted, but this definitely didn't give it to me. Maybe I was looking for more pirate-y antics? Maybe it was just that there was a lot of waiting around by all parties? I don't know, but it didn't deliver like I wanted it to. I think the most exciting part was when he and his mother were avoiding the pirates in the very beginning.

I still recommend it, because it IS one of the classics, but only for that reason. Although, it could be a good bed time story kind of book. Read a couple chapters a night, or something like that.

A beautifully rendered and surprisingly complex and morally ambivalent adventure tale about magical (if horrid) places like Treasure Island. A great rendering of fantasy and so convincing about the heroic role that a young man can play that one might forgive the bosh about "God save the Queen," English patriotism, and true men.

Billy Bones, former pirate and a drunk, has taken residence at the inn of Jim Hawkins' father. He's hiding out from his former comrades who want the treasure map he's hiding. When he dies suddenly, Jim Hawkins finds the map which starts him on a sea voyage to recover the treasure. Of course the pirates are on it from the start and it takes quite some adventures and luck to succeed.
This must be the source of all these treasure hunts and pirate adventures. It was a fast and enjoyable romp, with likable characters and villains that get their just deserts. I liked it more than expected - even though I kind of knew the story, the details of the tale were fresh and entertaining.

I finished reading this for the first time recently; I never was interested in it as a child, even though I always had a copy in my collection, and it wasn't until as a uni student being introduced to the other writings of Stevenson that I became enchanted with his narrative styles, his wonderful plots and the way in which he can draw you into a different world full of the most unique characters.Treasure Island proved no different, it was utterly absorbing from beginning to end, except for maybe where Dr Livesley took over from Jim Hawkins. I thought maybe the end was a bit abrupt as well, but the body of the writing was some very fine children's writing.

Treasure Island is perhaps THE classic pirate's tale. Robert Louis Stevenson, the author, created a rich story of adventure and treachery on the high seas all seen through the eyes of a boy named Jim Hawkins. Jim starts off as the son of tavern owners in a humble little port village. When an old seaman stays at the tavern, trouble soon follows him in the form of a pirate crew seeking revenge. I will not give away any more specific plot points, but events move forward to a great treasure hunt, treachery, and a surprisingly engaging story for adults as well as children.
