About this audiobook

Though Rylann Pierce tried to fight the sparks she felt for billionaire heir Kyle Rhodes the night they met, their sizzling chemistry was undeniable. But after being stood up on their first date, Rylann never expected to see him again. So when she finds herself face to face with Kyle in a courthouse nine years later, she's stunned. More troubling to the beautiful Assistant U.S. Attorney is that she's still wildly attracted to him.Just released from prison, Kyle Rhodes isn't thrilled to be the star witness in a high-profile criminal case-but when Rylann comes knocking at his door, he finds she may be the one lawyer he can't say no to. Still as gorgeous and sharp-tongued as ever, she lays down the law: she doesn't mix business with pleasure. When I wrote that I wouldn't mind Kyle's story I didn't know I'd get it in the next book. I'm not complaining. I loved Kyle.
If you read the series in order, you already know what happened to him and why.

Unlike the first two books though, this one has almost zero suspense. Yes, there is a case at first but it really serves only one purpose - to give Kyle and Rylann an opportunity to meet again.
About That Night is a light romance and one could find things to nitpick, but I won't. It was fun and very low on angst. It's because nothing bad happened between them nine years ago, nobody was abused or hurt or something similar. Neither needs healing and that's exactly what I needed to read. The bad things that did happen are connected to something or someone else.
The humour I expected was there too.
"You don't think it's too much? Like I'm trying too hard?"
Jordan put her hand over her heart again. "Oh, it's like watching Bambi take his first steps."

Anyway, even though I prefer more suspense, I enjoyed this book. "But you're supposed to be the girl with the plan." "Funny enough, I always seem to forget that around you," Rylann whispered.

It's not exactly that I don't like this book. It's that I don't care. I think, despite having two of this author's books left on my Kobo, is time to admit she doesn't do it for me. Heavily plot-driven, yet unrealistic situations aren't the romance I favor.

I'd be really surprised if an ethical lawyer didn't immediately, whether new or not, disclose history with a defendant anf/or a witness. I have a job where I have to disclose stuff. I do so unreservedly. What a dumb risk.

Anyway, that's not really the point. The point is I don't know how many more times I can read about what a legal mind she is, or how she works as a AUSA. IT'S every paragraph.

The book was ok but I'm preferential to books with more mystery in them.

The night they first met, Kyle Rhodes and Rylann Pierce made sparks fly. Now, he is an ex-con and potential witness in a high profile case that Rylann, a US Attorney, is assigned to. Neither can allow their past to cloud the present but passion has way of overcoming all obstacles.

Was expecting a romantic suspense plot and got a disappointing contemporary romance instead. Why deviate from the series style, especially since the potential for an excellent suspense story involving conspiracy in the prison system is definitely there?

Rylann and Kyle's romance is cute and steamy but their characters are too stereotypical and superficial - Rylann tries to be a tough as nails/play with the boys prosecutor and Kyle is the sensitive bad boy trying to make amends after a stupid mistake. Unfortunately, even their sarcastic banter, which is not up to the same standards as the previous books, cannot rescue the mundane plot.

The pacing is too slow and the long flashback toward the end is completely superfluous. The conflict revolves around keeping Rylann and Kyle's relationship secret to avoid embarrassment, which is both poorly executed and irritating.

There is another book coming out soon and I only hope that James returns to the tried and true romantic suspense plots of books 1 and 2.

About That Night is the third book in the FBI/US Attorney series by Julie James.

Nine years ago, when Rylann Pierce was in college she met this cute, handsome guy in a bar called Kyle Rhodes. Kyle walked her home, kissed her and invited her for dinner the following night. Next night Rylann is ready, waiting for Kyle but he didn’t show up nor did he call to cancel their date. She never saw him again but heard about him, impossible not to when Kyle is not only the son of a billionaire but a computer genius who was involved in big scandal years later.
After graduating from law school Rylann moves to San Francisco, where after years of hard work she has a job she loves and excels at, she is an Assistant U.S. Attorney. Rylann also has a stable relationship and can see wedding plans on her near future. But when her boyfriend of years blindside her with the news that he is moving to Italy with or without her all her plans come crumbling down.
Couple of months later an Assistant U.S. Attorney position opens up in Chicago; needing a change of scenery Rylann applies for it and gets the job. Rylann is happy to be back in Chicago close to her family and her best friend, Rea.
On her first day at work she is asked to replace another lawyer on a final disposition in court. The case she will be representing is U.S. Vs Kyle Rhodes aka The Twitter Terrorist.
Five months ago Kyle Rhodes’ super model girlfriend broke up with him via Twitter, minutes later she posted a video of her making out with a famous actor in a hot tub. Scorned, drunk and in a moment of rage Kyle brings down Twitter and leaves it down for two days while he’s getting wasted in Tijuana. When Kyle realizes what he did he fixes Twitter and returns to Chicago, he is ready to confront the consequences of his actions. At the airport he is arrested, soon after he is harshly prosecuted and sentenced. After serving four months in jail his sister Jordan helps the FBI with a case in exchange of Kyle’s early release (second book of this series, A Lot Like Love). The only thing left for Kyle is a court appearance to finalize the agreement and he will be a free man. What Kyle is not expecting is seeing the new Assistant U.S. Attorney, Rylann Pierce.

About that Night is one of those books you will be reading with a smile on your face, I call this kind of books “feel good books”. Julie James has done it again; she gives us another great contemporary romance.

Rylann is a smart, witty and sassy heroine. She is one of those women that plan her life to the minimum detail, she knows what she wants and what she needs to do to obtain it and works for it until she gets it. She is a career oriented woman who also dreams of having a family of her own. For her to fall in love with an ex-con is not an easy task, her career, her future is a stake if she let herself be ruled by her heart.

Kyle, omg I looooove him! (Yes, I know I’m using to many “o’s” but that’s how it sounds when I say I loooooove him.) He is sweet, caring, smart, funny, sexy as hell and… and… and… (Insert favorite adjectives in a hero in … ) Yes, he is that and more. Kyle is another one that knows what he wants and does whatever necessary to obtain it. I loved that he is rich as sin but never felt presumptuous or spoiled; he has work hard for what he has and when he made a mistake he accepted the consequences. Did I say he was dreamy and hot and … *swoon*

Kyle and Rylann relationship develops slowly, there’s an attraction from day one, something they can’t deny but still they take their time to know each other. There are many factors to take in consideration, their jobs, their lives, and their futures. Even though they tried to fight against what they were feeling the chemistry between them was too much not too succumb. That chemistry gave us scorching scenes and steamy situations.

Some of the characters we loved in previous books have cameos in this one; others have more important roles. One of those was Kyle’s sister Jordan, I loved her in her book (A Lot Like Love) and I loved her in this one. She is a great sister and a great character. I really love the dynamic of Kyle’s family and how they were there for him when he needed them, including his father, I loved how he tried to make light of the situation even though he suffered from Kyle’s actions and the consequences thereof.
Another character I loved was Rylann’s best friend Rea. I really hope to see more of her and Agent Wilkins.

With its perfect pace, its well-defined plot and its amazing and fun characters Julie James gives us with About That Night not only a great addition to a great series but a book to keep in our forever-favorite-shelf.
Once more Julie James asserts her position as one of the best Contemporary Romance writers and undoubtedly she continues as one of my top three favorite authors in this genre (if not my favorite).
I can’t recommend you enough this book and this series in general. Even though About That Night can be easily read as a stand-alone I recommend you to read previous books of this series first, they are as good, if not better than this book.

There is nothing not to like about About That Night! Rylann and Kyle are down-to-earth, mildly flawed and simply a great combination of sexy and sweet. Rae, Dex, Jordan, everyone else ... again, nothing not to like - even Jon gets sympathy in the end. Sweet romance. Contemporary, yet not so much courtroom romance. Just don't plan on needing more than two days with this easy read. Addictively cute banter; incredible first kiss that nine years cannot erase; billionaire heir who behaves like a regular guy (even when admitted in doozie of a mistake)....

With all this goodness going for the book, you may wonder at my rating of 4/5 stars. As many chick-lit books, this book is not particularly thought-provoking. It's not a book that sticks with you even after you finish reading it. It's a predictable, albeit delectable, romance presented in a completely non-singular manner. By design, it cannot earn a 5-star rating from me, but in no way does this disappoint me nor should it you.

I received a copy of About That Night through NetGallery and am pleased to give my honest review in exchange for access.

Good addition to this US attorney series with an enjoyable plot and well paced action. I liked the ambition and drive of the hero and heroine. It was fun seeing characters from previous books. Assistant US Attorney Rylann starts her new job on a case that involves billionaire Kyle who she once kissed back in college.

I thought this book was as good as the second one in the series, but it still didn't beat Something About You, which was a masterpiece for me. Kyle and Rylann had such an amazing chemistry going for them that I was completely sold on that first encounter they had. The witty banter and the sexual tension, followed by some hot scenes after made me fell in love with them a whole lot more by the end of the book. I didn't give it a five stars review because I thought that it lacked conflict. On the first two books of the series, we always had something major happening in the background of the two main characters lives and this time I don't think the author gave us that. But a very good book anyway.

    1/26/13 reread: Kyle. Happy sigh.

    -----

Another smart, witty novel from James.

Her previous heroines are strong, capable women. They're confident in themselves and their place in the world. I wish we'd see more like them in contemporary romance. Rylann is another stellar heroine. She knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it. I loved that there wasn't a lot of emo angst over the L word in this novel.

I think the conflict came across as rather weak. The fact that she was a US Attorney and Kyle was an ex-con should have had more punch, I think. In the end it seemed like a flimsy excuse to bring about the resolution. I admit, however, that I didn't think about this until afterward. While reading I was fully immersed in the story.

I am disappointed that it ended so quickly. I wasn't quite ready to see the end.

Wow, Kyle Rhodes, so much more than just another pretty face. Rylann and Kyle have a fantastic history before they meet again in the courtroom, and I really enjoyed reading how both of them work through their issues to be together. Also, Kyle's a talker. Be still my heart.

I was not even sure if I will read this book because the first two books in the series were just ok for me. But I liked this one, the best so far.

I am slightly disappointed with this book. I loved the 1st and 2nd book in the series but this book fell flat for me. When I reached the halfway mark I realized this was not going to have the action like the others. Rylann and Kyle were plain and nothing really happened. If this would have been the first book I might not have continued to read the series.

I liked the characters a lot, which makes me sad that I didn't like their story more. The first half was more legal drama and less romance drama than I was hoping for, and the best parts seemed like a rehash of the author's Just the Sexiest Man Alive. The second half was a lot more interesting to me (the h/h actually spend time together, which helps) but I kind of felt like there were about three or four storylines fused together awkwardly.

Okay, I'm gonna start this review off a little different from others. This series was phenomenal; an excellent read and even in my world where I try to get reading done, but often my life and/or my own writing interferes, I just couldn't put this series down, especially this book. I do think About That Night is the best of the series so far. To see Kyle finally get his HEA was a nice ride and the quirks that happen between him and Rylann were so funny, they had me laughing so hard I was in tears.I would definitely recommend this series to anyone looking for a bit of suspense, a lot of comedy and a whole lot of sexy scenes. A great read, once again.5 out of 5 stars.

A very solid book by Julie James. Very enjoyable. Rylann is a sassy heroine who has the smartness and drive I love to see, but also the ability to follow her heart. Kyle, who we have met before in the previous book by James, is determined and fun. These two came together really well and made for a quirky yet toughing love story. I will be re-reading this one, for sure.
