About this audiobook
The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.
A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants—from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before.
When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down—along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom—or with each other.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I don't read contemporary fiction very often but this is just the type of book I love to stumble across when I do. Nice characters in an interesting story with a happy ending.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a super cute that reminded me of “practical magic” but had more herbalism in it. Definitely enjoyed it and great for anyone who loves gardening and magic!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5oh my goodness. I can't say enough about how much this book sucked me in! mysterious trees, a magical garden, romance, (and just the right amount )... I loved it.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This book started out mystical and captivating with such promise but then turned into a kitschy, predictable, romance novel with a few gays thrown in to get on the "homo is ok" bandwagon. Waste of time.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is one of my favorites. It was the first book I read by this author and I’ve read all of the rest. I wish she would write more but for now I settle for reading and rereading them.
The audio version is lovely. The narrator does a great job with the different voices and I liked the added touch of changing the sound when they were on the phone. Highly recommend !!1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really like how the author makes fantasy an everyday thing in the lives of her characters. They live in the modern world, but they accept that magic is around them and making a difference in their lives. She does this without it feeling like the book takes place in a different world.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I liked the charm and spice of the family dynamic. It’s a little predictable, but entertaining!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good but a little boring at times and often predictable.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The outer space was my favorite part with Constance. For me the ending was most confusing? Wished I could ask a few questions to clear up a few things. It diffidently kept me wanting to read more,
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved this book my sister made a comment about it I couldn't stop listening till it was done.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Cute, predictable with a little twist. A lighthearted story for this dark time we are in.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I've read other novels by Sarah Addison Allen before and loved them, so perhaps I am a tad biased, but this book was wonderfully written and wonderfully narrated. The character development was believable and well-structured. The characters themselves were all intriguing and each had their own voices within the novel (not just from the narration style). The narration being from multiple points of view was done just right and contributed to the story's plot perfectly. The magic that's depicted throughout the town is beautiful and just the right amount of fantastic. The conflicts between the characters felt real and not over-dramatized. For anyone looking to read/listen to this book, I would advise that the triggering topics of domestic abuse and rape violence are brought up.
