About this audiobook
William Monk knows London's streets like the back of his hand; after all, they are where he earns his living. But the river Thames and its teeming docks—where towering schooners and clipper ships unload their fabulous cargoes and wharf rats and night plunderers ply their trades—is unknown territory.
Only dire need persuades him to accept an assignment from shipping magnate Clement Louvain to investigate the theft of a cargo of African ivory from Louvain's recently docked schooner, the Maude Idris. Monk is desperate for work, not only to feed himself and his wife, Hester, but to keep open the doors of her clinic, a last resort for sick and starving street women.
But he wonders: Why didn't Louvain report the ivory theft directly to the River Police? Why did he warn Monk not to investigate the murder of one of the Maude Idris crew? Even more mysterious, why has Louvain brought to Hester's clinic a desperately ill woman who, he claims, is the discarded mistress of an old friend? Neither Hester nor Monk anticipates the nightmare answers to these questions...nor the trap that soon so fatefully ensnares them.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This series just gets better and better. Monk has to find a stolen cargo of ivory tusks and the murderer of the man who was guarding it. Esther is still working in her clinic for women of the streets when a man brings a seriously ill woman to her, the same man who hired Monk. Monk and Hester are such a perfect couple, each so strong in their own way, and this book tests the boundaries of their relationship in a new and scary way. Hester especially must deal with soul-wrenching issues while Monk tests himself in a new area, the Thames river, all the time worrying about his wife.Oliver and Margaret make appearances, adding to their story. It was nice to see the stoic Oliver in a new and better light. Callandra makes a brief appearance; I'm glad for her and hope it's not the last we'll see of her. There are some new characters that I really enjoyed: a rat catcher and a mudlark. I had no idea about the River Police, but I found that whole idea interesting and looked up more about their history. I always learn something from this series.Another great read. On to book 15.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Resisted reading for a couple days because I have been so disappointed in the last several books.
What a pleasant and welcome surprise this book was!!
Great mystery, well developed characters, good sub plots, good dialogue.
Well done, Anne Perry - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5The narrator is dull, dreary and boring, wether this book is any good I don’t know as i cannot continue being made depressed by a voice that shouldn’t be employed
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Monk's intro to consulting must move into high gear to deal with the Thames scene. Monk's search for some missing ivory takes him deep into an alternate London environment the Thames River area. Lots of bumps and bruises acquired before he sorts it out with some assistance from the River Police. Meanwhile, Hester is dealing with plague in her neighborhood care center. A family connection leads to several tragic deaths before both difficult scenarios are brought to a final but not pleasant end.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Anne Perry is the queen of historical mysteries with few others even coming close
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5William and Hester Monk continue to struggle financially - Monk trying to earn enough for their living expenses while Hester donates her talents and efforts to a women's clinic for sick prostitutes. As the story opens, Monk is accepting a job, unlike his normally inquiries into murder but instead trying to recover a stole cargo. Meantime, Hester and her fellow volunteers are put into a precarious position by non-other than the same man as Monk is working for.The plot twists and intricacies take the reader on a emotional roller coaster, first with Monk in trouble, then Hester, then the entire clinic. The story was fantastic!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I love William and Hester Monk. This series by Anne Perry never fails, and this one involving a drastic problem at Hester's clinic for London's prostitutes, and a really convoluted case of piracy for Monk to solve, certainly wasn't light, but it did not require the mental energy I didn't have to give during holiday week. This is a great series, and I love to keep up with the adventures of this compassionate, intelligent, and gentle couple. If you've not read them, give them a try. THey're especially good on audio if you like that forma
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5So many events happen and new people are introduced in this book. Lady Callandra has decided to marry Dr Beck and the two of them are headed to Austria. Sir Oliver Rathbone has discovered his love of Margaret and has asked her to marry him. Monk has taken a case that involves the river and a different class of people. Monk also meets and forms a friendship the Scruff and the River Police. Hester faces grim facts when she discovers that one of the woman under her care died from the Black Death. The clinic must be guarded and no one can leave, and all stand the chance of contacting the dreaded disease. As usual, Perry does an excellent job in describing the setting and the characters. The reader can feel the panic and fear. Again, Perry drives home the fact that many will willingly donate money to help the "heathens" in Africa, but will ignore the "fallen" women suffering in London.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Typical Anne Perry story of her ex-policemen turned private detective, William Monk. As always Perry seems to have a knack of showing the seedier side of Victorian London. Monk must discover who stole a shipment of ivory from shipping magnate Clement Louvain. As usual, Monk makes use of the urchins and whores that populate the area around the Thames to help him solve the obvious mystery as well as the more sinister one that lurks at the back of the book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Monk is hired to find Ivory stolen from ship by a powerful man on the docks. Meanwhile this same man has brought a woman to Hester's clinic to be nursed. It's frightening when Hester discovers that the woman has the black plague and that has sentenced them to quarteen at the clinic and no one must know. Meanwhile Monk is working his case while worrying about his wife and what will happen to Hester.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I listened to a lot of Anne Perry's book's (audio versions obviously) a while ago and kind of got tired of how formulaic they were. The main thing I objected to was how the plot was often artificially drawn out by having the main characters NOT talk to each other, despite their obvious closeness and cooperation in a common cause. This felt forced and usually made me quite impatient. BUT this book didn't do this, there just seemed to be more plot to it and as a result it was more interesting and enjoyable. And the moment when Hester discovers the dark secret, shivers! Very scary!
