      Good story. Typical sexy stuff that I dont need but doesn't bother me. Another fun Sandra Brown experience.

      Five years ago a disastrous fire gutted the police headquarters. Seven people died in the flames but thanks to four brave men, most of those inside were rescued. The next day, and forever after, they would be known to the world as heroes.Now, one of them has called Britt Shelley, a hotshot newswoman, offering her the scoop of her career, and asks her to meet him. The next morning she wakes up naked in his bed to find him lying beside her - dead. She remembers nothing of the evening before but, to her horror,the police don't believe her. As the finger of blame points to her, she realises that she is the next intended victim . . .My Thoughts:I always know what to expect when I read Sandra Brown. The formula is the same, a crime to be solved, a cat and mouse relationship between hero and heroine and some sex. This book like all her others is a pacy thriller with all the twists and turns for good measure. I like to make sure that I always have this type of book on my shelf so that if I go through a bland patch of reading or just don’t know what I fancy I can always pick up one of these books. For me they are my comfort books because whatever the plot I know I am going to reasonably enjoy it.Just another pacy thriller with the romance element to it too and will appeal to anybody who likes these type of books. Very much in the same vain as Erica Spindler/ Tami Hoag/ and Karen Rose.

      Picking up a novel by Sandra Brown is a guarantee that the next reading hours with be filled with suspense, intrigue, and romance. The copyright is 2008 but as with many of the author's novels there is a timeless quality to the storyline as the corruption, betrayal, and deception could just as easily be ripped from today's headlines. The addition of the character Delno elevates interest to Raley Gannon's survival during his five years living in a cabin in the woods.

      Once again I missed the twist that brought an even more suspenseful ending than anticipated!

      Had a hard time getting into this story. After a seemingly endless string of incidents with the main characters careening from one life threatening event to another, the plot twists such that from page to page people switch from being "bad guys" to heros, and the characters that allegedly are on the side of law and order aren't. After a few more near misses to kill or maim the primary characters, the FIB arrive to save the day. However, there is yet another opportunity for our hero to be killed, before a "happy ever after" end to the novel.Overall, this is not one of this author's better books.

      Britt Shelley is not having a good week. When Jay Burgess, an old hook-up, calls and says he has something to share with her, TV reporter Britt is eager. What she doesn't expect is to wake up the next morning without her memory and with Jay Burgess' dead body next to her. Given that he is a homicide detective and one of the four heroes of the police station fire some years earlier, the police are very suspicious about Britt's story.Before she can convince the police that she is also a victim, she is kidnapped by Raley Gannon. Raley was a fire department arson investigator and Jay's best friend. He was investigating the fire at the police department when he went to a party at Jay's and woke up next to a dead girl who overdosed on cocaine. He also suffered from a memory loss. The ensuing investigation ruined his reputation and cost him his job and fiance. He has been brooding in a cabin in the woods and plotting revenge. When he hears Britt's story, he decides that together they can find out what happened and get both their lives back. The story was well-written and very suspenseful. It was filled with false friends, betrayals, and danger from assorted hired killers. Britt and Raley have a large number of suspects and no one they can trust. They are on the run from both the police and the hired killers. Fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this story.

      Couldn't finish this book. Woman reporter is drugged and framed for the murder of a dying detective and then is kidnapped from her bed by a mean, bullying, threatening recluse and taken to a cabin in the woods. The circumstances of what happened to her are like what had happened to him 5 years earlier. They team up to clear their names. Only read 3/4 of this book because everyone was so reprehensible -- couldn't stand it any longer

      A very nice, fast paced suspense which had a couple of unexpected twists, especially near the end, to keep me on my toes. The romance part was nice, even though it took little space, and the hero wonderful. I'm glad I read it.

      Another excellent one from Sandra Brown. I liked the chemistry between Britt and Raley. and their deep analysis of how, what, why and when of the past occurred. As with most of her novels, there is a twist at the end. This was a fast read, I felt as if I was a fugitive with them, it was so real.

      Another pretty good one from Sandra Brown, though I made the mistake of reading this too closely to the poorly done Standoff, which also featured a reporter and the man she (inadvertently?) harmed. There’s generally not a lot to be surprised about in these sorts of books — you know the male and female leads (Raley and Britt, in this case) are going to eventually join together both for their crusade and for their libidos — but I still enjoy the journey we’re taken on. Though I had some suspicions about what was really going on, I was still surprised by what exactly happened and who exactly was in charge. There was just one detail that bugged me. At one point, Britt decides to waylay the men who are chasing them by removing the valve covers from their tires, which then go flat as soon as the men try to go anywhere. Maybe tires were made differently (ahem) two (ahem) years ago, but I recently (inadvertently) drove for a few months with no valve cover on one of my tires, and it did not go flat. That seems like one of those details that a veteran writer and her editor should have picked up on. Sloppy!

      Good Thriller with a little romance. Girl wakes up with a guy and finds him dead. This leads her back to another person with the same experience. There was a fire a few years ago and 7 people died. Also many people were saved and several people were heroes. But were they really?

      TV reporter, Britt Shelley, wakes up next to the corpse of heroic detective Jay Burgess. She doesn't remember going to bed with Jay or anything else from the prior night.Britt got her first big break in reporting the fire at the police department five years before. Jay Burgess and three other city employees led others to their safety.Firefighter Raley Gannon and Jay were best friends. Raley kidnapps Britt and tries to make her tell him what really went on at Jay's home. Britt can't remember and then a report comes out that Jay died from suffication and Britt is a suspect.Raley amazes Britt by telling her that the same thing happened to him 5 years before. He was the lead arson investigator and felt that something was incorrect from one of the people who died at the police department. Then he went to a party at Jay's home. A woman gave him a drink and he woke up next to her coprse. Raley was removed from his investigation. Later when Britt broke the story on the fire and created sympathy for the woman who died at Jay's home, Raley was dismissed from the fire department.They realize that they had both been set up and that Raley's investigation and the fact that Jay had terminal cancer and had called Britt to give info about an old case, someone was guilty of something and not stopping at murder to keep their secret.Sandra Brown does and excellent job at building the suspense, letting the reader wonder how Raley and Britt could possibly save themselves then a surprising end.Well done and highly recommended.

      My aunt, who is a huge Sandra Brown fan, lent me this book. I can understand why she enjoys Ms. Brown's books. The plot was fast paced and fun -- I did not want to put it down. The story was interesting and kept my attention, though by the end I really didn't care who the killer was. The best part of this book was the relationship between the main characters and their journey to figure out who killed their friend. Great summer beach read.

      Mystery, danger, romance leading to passion (hot passion) - sheer fun. An exciting storyline with real good guys and bad guys and a doozie of a twist at the end. Spicy, spicy! Don't leave this lying around when the altar society comes for tea. I always enjoy Sandra Brown!

      Sandra has a knack for keeping a reader interested in her stories even though there is a common thread throughout all of her novels. Sey, mystery and intrigue. Smoke Screen fits in perfectly

As she tries to explain that she thinks she was drugged, it is patently clear that she is a suspect in his murder. The next night, she is kidnapped from her home and meets Raley Gannon, a disgraced firefighter who experienced a similar situation five years ago. Together, they try to figure out who set them up and realize that all the evidence points back to a fire that Raley was investigating and four police officers who were involved in that fire.This is a tense thriller with some steamy sex. I was surprised to learn the identity of the perpetrator. Very entertaining.
