About this audiobook
True Story of Courage and Compassion in a School Under Siege As 870 children waited in fear, their elementary school rushed into lockdown mode. As the nation faced yet another Sandy Hook story of tragedy, one woman rewrote the ending. Yet the story doesn't start with those first steps Michael Hill took into that Atlanta elementary school. It starts with Antoinette Tuff, a woman who faced her own pain, hurt, and rejection, yet held onto grace, faith, and hope. A hope that anchored her in the most high stakes of moments, a grace that allowed her to empathize with a hurting young man, and a faith that gave her the courage to love him back from the brink. This is more than just the amazing account of tragedy averted. It's the evidence of what we can do when we allow ourselves to be used by God. And it's a story of how God uses all of our life experiences--the good and the bad--to prepare us for our own moment of divine purpose.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5What a touching story. So hard to figure out what you would do despite your own personal history when trauma and tragedy is thrown in your face. So glad that she was able to find the strength and faith within herself to save those kids. A great memoir and heroic story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This woman's story of courage is very moving. Obviously her faith in her god kept her calm under pressure. Or it could also be the phone call she received just before the situation began just putting life into perspective. She spoke calmly to the intruder, she resigned herself to the situation and let rationality take over. Be a calming presence, don't talk too much, listen.I had to put the book down, though. I got really emotional when all was safe and she was explaining what was happening just past the office door. Brought tears of joy to my eyes, literally. I will finish the last chapter or two alone, at home, just in case I need to let the tears flow.Bravo to this brave woman. In the face of the intruder and her personal life.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Excellent book-could have done without the religion part of it-I think the story would have held strong without bringing prayer up every second page or so. I respect the author for dealing with what she went through and appreciate her calmness and intelligence.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was an inspiring and uplifting book. I could not put it down. Antoinette faced adversity and struggle in her own personal life, but remained a woman of great faith. The book alternates between the account of that day when the young gunman entered the school and stories from Antoinette's life. She was a brave, courageous woman being used as a "vessel" of God.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I, at first did not want to read nor review this non-fiction book, as I am saturated with school children's violent attacks and deaths. As I decided to start the book, I had no idea how the story line would unfold. What a surprise the it absorbed me so much that I finished the book one sitting. Author Antoinette Tuff uses a plot that I usually find confusing, and yet she (along with Alex Tresniowski) wrote in such a way the her personal life and that of talking down a school hostage situation blended into a compelling story. Praying to stay calm, amidst the turbulence around her, Ms. Tuff was able to use common sense in a terror-filled situation..Using her belief in God's protection and staying calm, she became a hero. For those who question leaning on God or your own belief system, this book will re-affirm your faith. I highly recommend this book to everyone, to get the inside story on a recent news event but also to realize that America is behind on treating mentally ill people, and making sure that they can obtain medicines when needed. Money should not be an issue, when the outcome of not taking medicines needed for mental health is so important.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a very interesting book. It was only partially about the day Antoinette Tuff was working at the front desk of the school when an intruder came in with a gun threatening to shoot people. It was also an autobiography of a woman who struggled a lot in life. But mainly it was a Christian book. It has many quotes from the Bible and it talks every few pages about how God has helped her in her life.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Have you ever thought what you would do if you were in a place where a shooter came in threatening to kill everyone? Neither had Antoinette Marie Tuff, but that's where she found herself. Her life to date had been tough, hard childhood, disappointing marriage, handicapped child, financial woes led right up to minutes before she met the man holding the gun in the front office of the school where she worked. But all that, a close walk with the Lord, and a mentor showed her how to listen to the Lord through His Word were at work in her life preparing her to face the man with the gun, to talk to him calmly. Could she talk him out of his plan to kill the children in the school and the police waiting outside or would she watch a tragedy unfold in front of her eyes? A page turner book that made me wonder how people face such odds and what my own (minor) struggles are preparing me to face.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I have to say right off the bat that I could not put this book down. Once I started, I stayed glued to it for the entire day and read it cover to cover in one sitting. Antoinette Tuff's story, even before the events of August 20, 2013, is gripping. Thanks to her faith in God and the Bible she has always had an abundance of gumption and spunk. No matter what hardship was throw in her way (and there were a lot of them), she handled every single one the best way she knew how - through prayer and strength. The fact that Ms. Tuff is a now motivational speaker is an example of a divine calling.
