About this audiobook
Penny Nichols has the London apartment, the classic cat, the villa in France, the fabulous bank account, and the great guy to share them all with. So everything’s perfect, right? Er, well... Pursued by gigolos, gold diggers, an ex-wife, and highly aggressive salesmen, all chasing after their millions, freelancer-turned-heiress Penny Nichols and her boyfriend, Jeremy, decide to take a whole summer off and sock away most of their inheritance. But they allow themselves one big splurge from their wish list--and that’s where all the trouble begins. At an auction on the French Riviera, Penny and Jeremy win much more then they bargain for, as they uncover a centuries-old rivalry involving the theft of a strange priceless treasure linked to Beethoven’s Germany. Investigating everything from a 1920s yacht on the Mediterranean, to the legendary superstitions of the island of Corsica, right up to a castle on Lake Como, Italy, Penny and Jeremy track down a mysterious elderly count whose fractured memory may hold the piece of this fascinating historical puzzle.

Reviews for A Rather Curious Engagement

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Heiress Penny Nichols is back, this time investigating a missing aquamanile that, according to the dictionary, is a cast-iron pitcher, often made in grotesque animal forms. The missing item belonged to the elderly Count who previously owned Penny’s yacht, Penelope’s Dream. Although aquamanilia can be worth a bit of money, but this particular items could be worth millions because of its alleged tie to Beethoven. And finding it is the first commission by Penny and Jeremy’s new investigation business. In the first book in this series, A Rather Lovely Inheritance, Penny Nichols hooked up with Jeremy Laidley, who also received a substantial from their Great Aunt Penelope. Now they’re taking some time to explore the world together (thus the yacht) and decide what to do with their vast fortunes. Now they’re aboard Penelope’s Dream, sailing the Mediterranean and exploring exotic locals and also explore their own romantic relationship. The book blurb contained a quote by Lauren Willig, who writes the “Pink Carnation” series of romantic suspense novels, all set in Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. And I’m a huge fan of Lauren Willig. Like the Penny Nichols books, Ms. Willig’s combine mystery with romance … although Penny and Jeremy inhabit the world of today. After reading Ms. Belmond’s first book, I rushed to buy A Rather Curious Engagement … and I plan to read #3 post-haste. I occasionally enjoy escapist fare … and these C.A. Belmond books certainly fit that category. My only complaint is that the author tends to overuse the word “pretty.” It’s such a meaningless word and every time I saw it in print, which was way too often, I cringed. Please find a Thesaurus, my dear Ms. Belmond!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I'm really enjoying there series from Bemond. The characters are interesting, the surroundings are sophisticated and the concept of someone who is suddenly wealthy having to find out how to live with that new wealth. There's romance, mystery and great descriptions.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was cute. Not as good as the first, but definitely kept my attention. I do have an issue with the whole ex-wife thing. The set up made it seem as though that would be a central plot through the whole book, and it really was just sort of dashed in and out of.
It's still a charming story with a solve a mystery component that was done well. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5What would your life be like if you just unexpectedly inherited beaucoup dinero? Well, for one thing you would be dealing always with people who have a need or use for your money and have tons of ways to help you spend it. This includes ex-wives, shady family members and hordes of the deserving poor. Penny Nichols and Jeremy her boy friend have thrown their lot together and before settling down to new business ventures decide to take a gap summer. They have one exciting adventure after another which take them from the French Riviera, to Lake Como in Italy and even to Corsica, Napoleon's birthplace.
If your summer plans include a staycation on veranda beach this is one way to get away. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A Rather Curious Engagement continues the adventures of heiress Penny Nichols and her boyfriend Jeremy. Penny and Jeremy decide to allow themselves one big splurge as they try to figure out what to do with their new fortune. A vintage yacht being auctioned off catches their eye and they dream of quiet, relaxing boating trips. Naturally, what they get is more than they bargained for and when the yacht mysteriously disappears Penny is on the case. This second book in the Penny Nichols series is as light and entertaining as the first one. Again read by Katherine Kellgren, the audio book is perfect for a summer road trip. Her posh accents combined with Penny's wicked sense of humor kept me laughing! What fun books!
