It was great to read about Prinrose et al again, but I marked this down a star because the recipes weren't as good as on the first one. I blame the sudden addition of mini marshmallows. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5If anyghting I liked this book better than EVERYTHING ON A WAFFLE. Returning to this small Vancouver Island British Columbia town is like coming home. Primrose is an excellent narrator as she invites us in to share her life. Foster kids, romance, interesting characters. Its all there. Its not necessary to read EVERYTHING ON A WAFFLE before ready this one. This one stands on its own. Primrose has some great insights into her neighbor's characters. I listened to this on my iPod and the narrator is excellent.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In this episodic sequel to "Everything on a Waffle," Primrose relates a variety of sagas from a variety of the residents of her little Canadian town of Coal Harbor. We have the story of Ked, a foster child taken in by Bert and Evie, the school teacher who has started crying a lot, Uncle Jack, who is building a restaurant right across from Miss Bowzer's Girl in the Red Swing, a logging company about to clearcut a mountain nearby, a Coal Mountain expatriot who wants to donate a million dollars to the town, and a group of scraggly kids who have come to town to protest the logging. There's more, that's just a few of the big ones.Still, it's all told in the warm, funny style that Primrose uses (though it's not the way any 12-year-old would actually write). An entertaining read. Not quite up to par with "Everything on a Waffle" but still mighty good.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5One Year in Coal Harbor by Polly Horvath is the sequel to Everything on a Waffle. Although Primrose returns to narrate, she isn't the main character. That honor goes to Evie and Bert's newest foster child, a troubled boy named Ked.Ked spends one year with his foster parents. In that time Primrose does her best to help him fit in. She can still remember the time when she was ridiculed for being a foster child.Primrose's uncle and the owner of the Girl on the Red Swing continue to compete. Now it's all about cooking. Nudged on by Primrose, Kate Bowzer is convinced that Uncle Jack doesn't think she can do French cooking. She wants to show him a thing or too about her skills!Meanwhile outside of town there's a protest over the proposed clear cutting of the nearby mountain. It seems as though Coal Harbor is on the eve of becoming a very different place. Primrose observes and reports on the adults' protests and meetings over the logging.Although Coal Harbor is a fictional small town on Vancouver Island, it's history as laid out in Horvath's two books bear an uncanny resemblance to that of the city of Vancouver. Readers familiar with the story of Stanley Park — next door to an area named Coal Harbour, might see some similarities with this fictional Coal Harbo(u)r.The Canadian edition, by the way, is One Year in Coal Harbour and frankly I wish the U.S. edition kept the Canadian spelling.
