Greg Iles wrote my favorite mystery of all time - Mortal Fear. I have not loved all his books but I'm thinking this one is going into the 'Liked a Whole Lot' category. Will and Karen Jennings have a nice life with their young daughter. Until they become the next victim of a clever and very practical kidnapper. In general, I think the kidnapping of small children is a too easy central plot device but in the hands of this craftsman, it's nearly peripheral to the match of cunning that is the real plot. SPECIAL NOTE: I just discovered that this is the second entry for this same book! Apparently, I read it and did not like it much 7 years ago. The most recent version was an unabridged audio version. Maybe that's the difference. First time this has happened in more than 13 years of keeping this list!

My first Greg Iles book but it will definitely not be my last. Non stop thriller from beginning to the end. Intriguing notion of how to commit the perfect kidnapping and a race against time is set in motion. Plenty of action especially in last 100 pages. 4.5 ⭐️. I look to forward to reading more from this author.

Very disappointing! Usually, Greg Iles' books are engaging and multi-layered. Definitely not true in this suspense novel. The story is straightforward and simple, a tale of kidnapping. Nothing about it stands out. Too bad!

This will be my first and last book by Greg Iles book. The plot is plausible but the denouement and other aspects are too far fetched to be believable. I skimmed the last half of the book. Mr. Iles is also remarkably sexist. The audience at the convention consists of " doctors and their wives"... Does he know that half of med school grads are now female. Also, Karen Jennings has to leave medical school just before finishing because she is pregnant.. Do they not have child care in the USA. This causes great resentment on her part towards her husband.

Definitely a page-turner. This was written back when Greg Iles books were concise enough to be read in 24 hours, and this one is worthy of doing just that. The suspense level stays high throughout. On the negative side, I found that as the climax approached, the ending became just a bit too predictable. Almost like a 'made in Hollywood' ending. While I know that this book was ultimately made into a movie, I didn't want to feel like this novel was going to follow a formula. All in all, still a very enjoyable suspense thriller.

Kidnapping -- a perfect kidnapping -- repeated annually. This time he picked the wrong family to victimize. Good.

24 Hours by Greg IlesIles never fails to please IMHO. I have read several of his books but since audiobooks have become so popular and so many of his books are offered on audiobook I find that I prefer to listen to them when I am driving. It keeps me awake and entertained while I am driving and never causes me to lose focus as people have suggested. If anything it keeps my brain working instead of becoming mesmerized by the road ahead. Anyway, 24 Hours is classic Iles. The daughter of an anesthesiologist is kidnapped and her parents are not about to sit back and take it. Of course the kidnapper is extra wiley and full of revenge and the little girl who has been kidnapped has an extra complication, she has juvenile diabetes and it is time for her injection. The mentally disabled man caring for her may not be capable of giving her the care she needs. It grabs you and doesn't let you go until the last word. I feel the same way about most of Iles books, although in honesty I haven't listened to one in quite a while. I am kind of glad because now I will get back to listening to some old favorites and maybe some new ones that I missed over the last few years. I'm not sure if he has been putting any out lately but I know at one time he was quite prolific.

The book was a lot better than I was expecting from reading the first chapter. It has it's moments that are over written and silly and yet the story is interesting and entertaining. The plot is tight and everything wraps up nicely in the end. It's also one of those rare mystery/thrillers where the police and FBI are actually competent!

I happened to want to see what else Iles had written while I was listening to this gripping audio---only to discover his own horrible car accident in 2011. I have not looked far enough to see how Isles is doing now but it made this action filled novel all that more compelling to listen to.

The book opens with a kidnapped child being released in a busy McDonald's parking lot. The kidnappers have a devious method of divide and conquer to get what they want, and they have their sights on a new family. It's every parent's nightmare. The book opens with tension and never lets up. The only knock I have comes at the end where credibility is stretched molecule thin (no spoilers here, you'll know it when you see it).In short, this book was good enough that I will be on the look out for more of Greg Iles work.

From my blogWhat a fast rush of reading to the heart pounding beat. For many this will be a one seat read. I really enjoyed this one, a packed action thriller. The whole time the images were in my mind, a definite movie like book. I should have known, it is a movie, the title is Trapped, now I must go watch it. I feel like I may have seen it because the story felt to 'real' to me, deja vu like. The saying it is to good to be true always rings correct at some point. Why do criminals never know when to stop, that greed will get them every time. 3 Criminals pull off a great crime but only 1 was in charge, talk about scare tactics to keep loyalty.I find children in books are always the ones that steal the story. I loved Abby. She was so genuine as a 5 year old, her fear, creative thoughts, naivety, that innocence you have to love about children. I enjoyed how Greg Iles joined all the stories into crashing climax. There were definite unbelievable scenes, the kind you love even though you know it is all bull so for me this still gets a high rating, for others that may give them a lower rating.

A very exciting book from cover to cover. Greg Isles captures your attention and takes it through a wild ride that deems very exceptional. And although the ending felt a little forced, this entire book screams of wit and clever writing. A very solid read all around.

This is the first time for me reading anything by author Greg Iles. Many of the ideas in this book, 24 Hours, were too familiar, which made it very predictable. I read a few other reviews on amazon.com to see what other people thought about the book. I recall someone saying that they thought there were alot of unanswered questions with the ending. I tend to agree with that. Questions like…Did the wife survive her gunshot wound? Was Hickey’s wife convicted? Was Huey institutionalized? What happened to the money? Even with these questions left unanswered, the book still was not a total slam.

I put off reading this a couple of times beacuse Greg Iles stories can be pretty brutal and the involvement of a child being kidnapped filled me with horror. BUT, this was handled well and whilst I don't want to give the plot away, the suffering and violence was realistic and in context. This is a good read, a page-turner and not too long!

In typical Iles fashion, he takes what reads as awful back cover copy (I personally think most of Iles books sound boring and nothing special if you just read the back cover blurb), and turns in a fun book that is a pleasure to read. This book, while nothing breathtakingly different, is a fun romp that takes place in about a 24 hour time frame. Kidnapping for ransom, planned to perfection, yet spoiled by parents that won't lie down. I felt for the characters (both good and bad) and found myself woven into their lives within the brief time frame covered by the book. Iles always has a way of weaving a story such that when you sit down to read, you keep saying "Just one more chapter", and before you know it tons of time has passed.

A perfect page turner. The imaginary and emotions are so vivid that it is like you are right there experiencing what the character's are. Asks the reader the perfect question of what would you do if it was you. A unique plot that twists and turns leaving the reader wondering just what will happen next. Will and Karen Jennings are relatable characters that you will definitely be rooting for.

I wasn't sure I would like this, since I am not really that in to thrillers, but I found the story riveting. It moved along at a rapid pace, and the villain was one step of everybody (including me). I could hardly wait to see how it ended.

It is a gripping novel about the Jennings' daughter that is kidnapped. There are two kidnappers and they have an elaborate scheme. If one does not contact the other withing a certain amount of time, the daughter is to be killed. This takes place over a literal 24 hours.

I read this book a long time ago. At the time I wasn't really looking for a book to read. I was only browsing. I picked up this book and my son bought it for me. I started reading it right away. It captured me. It was a page turner. Since, I've read Greg Iles I have become a fan. Very good book. A must read for sure

What a great book! I was hooked from the beginning, although some parts were not easy for me to read. The premise of the book is very sad and tragic IMO, but I sort of assumed from the beginning, it would turn out okay in the end .... I'll leave you to read it to so you can see if I was right or very sad at the end. This is the second book I've read by Greg Iles and he did not disappoint (although admittedly, I liked the first book I read by him better, but I think the plot line is a big cause of this).I think I will pick up more books by him in the future. The thing that makes me laugh the most is I originally downloaded this book to listen to while unpacking at the new house and of course became hooked on the story and listened to it very quickly and not only while unpacking! I will admit some parts did seem to drag a bit and in some places time seemed to go soooo slow, but I would imagine for some of the victims, time did feel slow, so I'm still wondering if that was intentional on the author's part or not. But that aside, I enjoyed the book greatly.
