Author

Elin Hilderbrand

Elin Hilderbrand lives on Nantucket, has three children and is the author of 27 novels, including SUMMER OF ‘69.  Elin met Dottie in the spring of 2017 at the annual Post & Courier luncheon in Charleston and Elin says, “It was love at first sight.” The two authors proceeded to meet on Nantucket every chance they got and they texted and emailed non-stop. They dreamed of doing a joint cooking show called “Cook the Books,” where they would invite a third author on to make a signature dish for each episode. They also talked about a cookbook called “The Southern Belle and the Gray Lady.” Elin’s summer of 2020 novel, 28 Summers, is dedicated to Dottie and Dottie makes a cameo appearance in Elin’s summer of 2021 novel, Golden Girl. “I will never again have a writer friend like Dottie,” Elin says. “Those of you who knew her understand what I mean, and those of you who didn’t will just have to trust me. They broke the mold.”

Meredith's husband is in jail for running a Ponzi scheme. Connie lost her husband to cancer a couple of years ago. The two women were fast friends until around then when they ended their relationship with bad feelings. But now, Meredith needs Connie more than ever and Connie easily comes through for her. The story is set on Nantucket which adds a wonderful backdrop to Silver Girl. I found the book dragged in several parts and I don't know that I cared much for Meredith so I rated it in the middle.

I came to this book via my reading group and I stayed for the descriptions of the Nantucket scenery, but not much else stood out. It's ooooookay and doesn't have any gaping flaws, but overall it's kind of shallow and predictable--pretty girls, bad boys, trouble with the kids, etc--only the $ amounts are bigger. If the Madoff mess intrigues you then you might find this a more interesting read than I did.

SILVER GIRL by Elin HilderbrandPublished by Reagan Arthur Books/Little, Brown and Company, Hachette Book GroupISBN-13: 9780316190428At the request of The Hachette Book Group, an ARC TPB was sent, at no cost to me, for my honest opinion. Synopsis (from publisher): Meredith Martin Delinn just lost everything: her friends, her homes, her social standing - because her husband Freddy cheated rich investors out of billions of dollars. Desperate and facing homelessness, Meredith receives a call from her old best friend, Constance Flute. Connie's had recent worries of her own, and the two depart for a summer on Nantucket in an attempt to heal. But the island can't offer complete escape, and they're plagued by new and old troubles alike. When Connie's brother Toby - Meredith's high school boyfriend - arrives, Meredith must reconcile the differences between the life she is leading and the life she could have had. Set against the backdrop of a Nantucket summer, Elin Hilderbrand delivers a suspenseful story of the power of friendship, the pull of love, and the beauty of forgiveness. My Thoughts and Opinion: I would like to first start with 2 caveats. This was the first book I had read by this author. After posting that it was my current read, I received mixed comments about her previous books, so quite honestly, was a bit skeptical. The second, in fairness to the author, was the length of time it took me to read the book. It had nothing to do with the writing style, it holding my interest, the characters and/or the story line. Matter of fact, quite the opposite. I really enjoyed all of the above. It was because at the present time, I am also caught up in a televised trial that has taken away from my reading time. As far as the novel, it is the type of read where you become part of the story. I felt that the author brought the characters to life, whereas I could feel their emotions. I enjoyed the dynamics of the relationships between the characters, including their flaws. At times, I wanted to comfort them and at times, reprimand them. The story covered a 40 year friendship and at certain times of reflection, would alternate between the present with memories of past. The setting of Nantucket was vivid. A moving novel of friendship, love, pain, forgiveness, loss, desperation, life and hope. My favorite quote in the book, which I feel is so true, was on page 313, "God, human beings were resilient, Connie thought. They were resilient!" A perfect summer read!! My Rating: 4

Good thing I read Stephanie Madoff's memoir first! This thinly veiled fictionalized account of that woman's ordeal really stretches the disclaimer "....work of fiction....any resemblance to real people purely coincidental....yada yada yada" MY FOOT. As pure beach read chick lit, it was a meah...as an audio, it was well done. It's basically the rich girl married to crook has to find her way in life when there is no money, no home, no friends, etc. By moving the scene of the trauma to Nantucket, Hilderbrand is able to create a lone remaining friend who takes in the poor about to starve spouse, and together they reconstruct their traumatically scarred lifes. As a story, it was just short of "Oh puhleez....can't you write anything original"? I might have felt differently if I'd read it before reading [The End of Normal] but I suppose it's a great example of truth mirroring fiction or vice versa? Far too hokie for me. If I had to rate it, 2 stars..

Meredith's husband is in jail for cheating the world of billions of dollars through his illegal investment schemes. She too is a pariah and under federal investigation, but was guilty of only oblivion and loving too much. Now she has been rescued by her lifetime friend and brought to Nantucket to hide and heal. They both work through their assorted griefs and losses, as well as the bumps in the road of their friendship, in the lovely nantucket landscape and community.

This is the second Hilderbrand novel that I have listened to as an audiobook, so can I just start by saying that I really would love to spend a summer vacation in Nantucket! Whether her characters are living in a beautiful mansion or a rustic cabin, Hilderbrand brings out the dynamics of family and friends in a way that makes my heart yearn for more.Meredith and Connie had a rift in their friendship years ago, but when Meredith finds she has no-one else to turn to, she takes a chance by escaping from her trauma with the only person that hasn't shunned her. As Connie is getting ready to spend the summer in her beautiful Nantucket home, she invites Meredith to join her. Since Connie has still been mourning the loss of her husband, she is nervous about all the publicity that could come along with her new roommate so they try to keep Meredith's presence known from as many people as possible. There is still tension between Meredith and Connie as their broken friendship never really had a chance to recover earlier on. While both of these women are dealing with their own demons and issues, they must once again learn to trust and confide in each other so they both can move on with their lives. The men they both loved and trusted have been ripped away from them and it seems that they need to come to terms with their lives and friendship before they can open their hearts again. As both of these women come to terms with their lives, we find out exactly how they got to the place that has caused so much turmoil. Meredith recalls periods of her life with Freddy and even though she fell in love with him, she slowly learns that most of Freddy's attention to her was just a front to get him further ahead with his investors. Connie misses and loves her husband, but she can't seem to stop blaming herself for his death and the fractured relationship that she has with her daughter. Since Meredith and Connie both feel alone in their misery they really do not have any other choice than to seek comfort from each other.I love novels that show how important it is to have strong female relationships. With themes of love, friends, heartbreak, and loss this novel really does have a lot to offer. And within the story Connie even gives Meredith a couple of cooking lessons that leave you salivating! I would have loved to read this book while lounging on a beach somewhere, but I also think it would make a great book club selection.

So Meredith's husband did a fantastic Ponzi Scheme and mucked up all of her friendships. Everybody hates her and believes she was complicit. Not only that, she is under investigation as is her son, Leo. Hubby Freddy is choosing to be mute in prison. Meredith can have no contact with her sons and her husband is choosing to not talk. At all.Connie lost her husband two and half years ago to cancer. At the time, her daughter, Ashlyn wrote herself out of Connie's life. Connie is heartbroken and lonely. Connie and Meredith also burned bridges earlier due to Freddy's finances. What I loved about this book was the ironic juxtapositions and contrasts. Meredith and Connie are the oldest of friends who find themselves isolated due to life events and run to each other even though they have hurt feelings. Both women have lost their husbands but in different ways. Both women are cut off from their children but in different ways. Both women are terrified to trust again but find they are able to trust one another and a love interest.I find myself drawn to the middle age woman. It frightens me. I wonder if it is because I am becoming... No, never mind. I won't go there. The protagonists are strong but weakened women. They have been knocked around by life and death and children and friends but dig deep within themselves and find the strength they always had. This is what I love about the middle age protagonist. That and the importance on the old, tried and true friend. And I loved the ending. Cheat and you miss the irony. Love Toby. Love Connie. Love Meredith. Love Dev.Solid 4.5 stars

Excellent book! Meredith is running away from her life; her husband is a Bernie Madoff-like character, imprisoned for being the mastermind of a Ponzi scheme. Meredith herself and her two beloved sons are under investigation. She calls an old friend, Connie, and begs to hide out in her summer home in Nantucket. Thus the adventure begins.

Silver Girl is the story of Meredith Martin Delinn, a middle class girl from Philadelphia who met, married, and became fabulously wealthy with her husband, Freddy Delinn. The only problem is, Freddy was just busted by the SEC as the biggest crook of all time. Desperate, Meredith calls her estranged best friend Connie hours before the FBI is set to seize her New York penthouse. Connie takes Meredith with her to her summer home in Nantucket, where the women must work to mend the friendship they broke several years earlier. I am a huge Elin Hilderbrand fan and I look forward to her new novel every summer. I often worry that the works of my favorite authors will become old and worn-out for me, but so far Hilderbrand has avoided that fate! In Silver Girl she takes a ripped from the headlines technique--Freddy Delinn is very similar to Bernie Madoff--and uses it to craft a compelling story of two women rediscovering themselves and their friendship after their lives have fallen apart. The two core characters--Meredith and Connie--are richly imagined, and Hilderbrand does a good job of sharing their backstory so the reader can see how their lives fit together. The supporting characters are also very strong, and really help round out the story of these women's lives. Hilderbrand uses just enough romance and supsense to keep the story really interesting, while focusing on the friendship between these two women. I really recommend this book to fans of women's fiction or Hilderbrand's earlier work. I had a hard time putting this novel down, and I definitely had tears at the end--it's a perfect summer read!

It's difficult to imagine that anyone in the US hasn't heard of Bernie Madoff or his Ponzi scheme that bilked thousands of people out of billions of dollars. For some people it is still difficult to presume that his wife, Ruth Madoff knew nothing about his business dealings. Ms. Elin Hilderbrand has tackled this very touchy subject in a fictionalized account of Meredith and Fred Delinn. Meredith is a society wife and mother that lived a glamorous life style with multiple homes, cars, etc. Even she is shocked to find out that her husband of nearly 30 years has built his investment firm on false pretenses. Meredith is left with nothing but a few articles of jewelry received from her family, a few personal items (pictures and a record album) and some clothes. She is considered a suspect in her husband's scheme simply because he asked her to move some funds days prior to his arrest. Meredith is truly lost in New York City, no money, no friends and she can't even have contact with her children because they are suspects as well. After Fred's arrest, when she thinks she's at her lowest, Meredith calls upon her childhood best friend for a rescue, Connie Flute.Connie is there for Meredith but they have issues to deal with from their past. One of the biggest is that Meredith wasn't there for Connie when her husband was dying and she never even came to the funeral. But even with that Connie knows that Meredith wouldn't have called if she didn't need her, and she takes her to Nantucket to get away from it all. If only life were that easy, there are simply too many people on Nantucket that Meredith's husband cheated and her refuge becomes anything but when Connie's house is vandalized and she is confronted by a former "friend" in a local hair salon. Dealing with her husband's business fraud is one thing, but then it comes out that he was having an affair for over six years with their interior decorator. Silver Girl seems to be a story not only about resilience and surviving but about friendship and family. Connie learns that she has problems to confront and she has to move on with her life. She learns to do this with the help of Meredith. Meredith learns that she is more than Mrs. Delinn and she works hard at assisting the investigation into the recovery of funds. Both Connie and Meredith get thrown curves but together they deal and move on. I think that Connie and Meredith's relationship epitomizes true friendship, a willingness to be there for one another no matter what. This is not a light-hearted read but it was one that I enjoyed even with all of the drama.

"Sail on Silver Girl. Sail on by. Your time has come to shine. All your dreams are on their way.” Page 341Meredith Delinn certainly didn’t feel like any dreams were coming true after her husband was arrested for stealing millions from investors.Being the wife of an investment thief definitely was not pleasant. Freddy had cheated investors out of millions, was finally caught, and made his family's life miserable. He wouldn't talk to authorities about anything and wouldn't tell them that his wife and sons had nothing to do with his swindling of investors out of their money. Meredith and her two sons were also under investigation.So…..as Freddy was hauled off to jail for 150 years, Meredith left town with her best friend Connie. They were staying at Connie's beach house in Nantucket....beautiful Nantucket where Meredith had to remain incognito since many investors lived there.Despite her disguise, someone recognized Meredith and small assaults on Connie’s property started occurring. They were blaming Meredith for Freddy’s thievery.SILVER GIRL went from past to present describing the story behind each character and how they became the person they were today. Many themes presented themselves…..love, health issues, social issues, family and friendship connections, and most evident.....GREED, BETRAYAL, and DECEIT. All three were ruining many lives including Meredith’s.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and became involved with the characters. The characters were made of a great circle of friends tangled in situations since high school. As you read the book, you will start to ask yourself: Do I really know the people I have in my life relationships? Well….hopefully we do, but the book definitely will make you question yourself. The book title plays a major role in solving the mystery that was also woven into the book.I am giving Silver Girl an outstanding 5/5....Ms. Hilderbrand kept my interest from the first to the very last page.

Meredith and Connie, friends since birth, have been estranged for the last 13 years. But when Meredith's husband is convicted of stealing billions from investors in a Ponzi scheme and the media surround her, Connie comes to her rescue.Connie has been lonely since her husband died the year before and she has lost contact with her daughter. So she hopes to rekindle the friendship she and Meredith had. Over the course of a summer in Nantucket, Meredith and Connie examine their relationship and come to terms with their separate family dramas. The book was okay, but I didn't really care much about any of the characters. There wasn't much depth. They fought, they made up. Meredith was embarrassed about her husband's actions and afraid the world would think she was complicit. Even though the situations would be really difficult in real life, I didn't feel like I knew enough about Meredith or Connie to care how their situations turned out.

Meredith Delinn has been living the high life with her investment broker husband Freddy, and she and her three children have had all the luxuries that money could buy. But it turns out that her husband was swindling his clients in a Ponzi scheme (think real life: Bernie Madoff) and just like real life, he got caught and went to prison for the rest of his life. Meredith now has to manage her emotions in order to make the right decisions for herself and her family.

*** Minor spoilers, from first few chapters***

Her daughter hasn't spoken to her since then, and her sons are off limits too, because one son worked with his father and is under suspicion and he lives with his brother, to further complicate matters. Meredith therefore cannot contact any of her immediate family, and now she might be facing prison time just as well. Struggling to keep her head above water, she swallows her pride and calls her oldest and dearest friend, Connie, from whom she has been estranged for years. Connie is on her way to her Nantucket beach house for the season and begrudgingly brings Meredith along. Meredith now has to reconcile her love/hate relationship with her husband, her anxiety over her children, her need to hide from the public, and her fear of what the future brings over the course of that one summer at the beach. Throw in another distraction: her old flame Toby (who is also Connie's brother), is coming to visit...

I have read several of the author's books before and consistently enjoyed them. She has a knack for making the reader feel they are right beside the characters, sitting on a sandy beach towel, watching the tide roll in. This book has a slightly different feel because it conjures up recollections of the Bernie Madoff trial, but it is still a truly wonderful beach read. The plot emphasizes the importance of female friendships in a time of need. I recommend you toss Silver Girl in your canvas tote now so you will be ready when you are heading to the shore or the pool this season.

Silver GirlISBN: 9780316099660Author: Elin HilderbrandSilver Girl by Elin HilderbrandI have read a few of Elin's books and really enjoyed them soI didn't feel I really needed to even know what this book was about at all to want to read it. I was not disappointed.I love the book covers with beaches on them or knitting or cooking things. This book is about Meredith and she's fled New York as her husband is in prison for taking others money via stock market. She calls on a friend that she's not talked to in years and she picks her up and summers on the island.Strange things start happening: photos of her and not leaked to the press, house smeared with words that rattle her and Connie. They need to change things up so nobody knows she's there so they can just live freely on a daily basis and not fret having to look over their shoulder all the time. Connie has a lot of obstacles to tackle and overcome since she lost her husband and she is doing them with help from Meredith. They transform Meredith so they can start leaving the house.Book also reverts back to when they were growing up as teens. Meredith dated her brother. It's been 5 years since Connie had a husband and now she's just starting to date, but brings Meredith along with her cuz she's so insecure. The story of how she met and other things that happened in her life are told and it makes sense, another piece of the puzzle. There is also a detailed explanation as to why the name of the book is silver girl. I didn't see that coming but it is beautiful. The lawyers want her to tell them of names he used, for animals, nicknames, places they travelled to, slang words etc so they might be able to find the missing 10 million dollars that he's not telling anyone where he hid it.Detailed descriptions on the island, view from inside the top of the lighthouse, the water, the boat make me wish summer was still here. traditional things to do are described. Their previous years where they travelled extensively through Europe and overseas. She even looked through the box of photos she took with her to maybe find a clue as to where the money was?I like this book for a lot of reasons, I like how there are just a handful of characters to keep track of but they lead such a very bountiful life.Like the two different simultaneous stories going on that intertwine themselves to one another. I rate this a 5 out of 5.

I enjoyed reading this book. It shows that sometimes the wife doesn't know what is going on and how a lifetime friendship can be what you need. I enjoyed the characters and what was happening to them. Elin did a good job of showing us how Meredith and Connie changed over the course of the summer. A life-long friendship like theirs is very rare.

What first attracted me to Silver Girl by Elin Hilderbrand was the island of Nantucket. I went there a few years ago to trace my family roots and fell in love with the island. There are few places that can pull you in and make you feel joyous and that it is the place for me. This island has history of sea captains and the creation of business dynasties but there also is an indescribable feeling of happiness. The second thing that attracted me to this book was the title, Silver Girl, taken from Bridge over Troubled Waters. This is song that is very special to me for personal reasons. Now when I hear it you can count on me to cry. The second part of the lyrics runs through the book in just the right places. The story has at its core two women who had been friends as long as they could remember but several things had torn it apart. When we meet them, Meredith Delin had just experienced the shock of her life. Her husband Freddy Delin has just had his name splashed over all the news shows and newspapers for being under investigation for running Ponzi scheme like Bernie Madoff. He had cheated so many investors out of their life savings. Meredith is at her penthouse apartment trying to grab a few things before she vacates the apartment. She fills a duffel bag with some of her clothes, her sunglasses, some photos, some documents and Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Meredith meets Connie at store in a bad neighborhood to ask her if she can stay with her a while. They hadn’t talked to each other for so long. Connie Flute reluctantly agrees. They head to Nantucket. Connie’s husband had died of cancer a couple of years ago and the grief was still so strong, she still couldn’t sleep in the their bed in the master bedroom. Her daughter had taken off in the car that she inherited from her father shortly after the funeral. Connie was torn, would they be able to fix their broken relationship? Or would taking Meredith to Nantucket be a huge mistake.OK, did this book live up to my expectations? I think for the most part it did. Elin Hilderbrand creates a story that shows the unrelenting pain and shame of having a crooked husband and father. She cuts into the core of troubled relationships, parental love and the sorrow of separation. Nantucket was portrayed as I remembered it and to my delight, I learned a little more about the island’s history. You can taste the salt in the air and hear the soothing surf coming on the beaches. Now, of course, I yearn to go back. As for The Bridge over Troubled Waters, the lyrics and chords seem to flow through the book. This is something more than a beach read. The lyric appear in just the right places in the book and add even add even more meaning to the book. The only thing that irritated me some about this book was that there were no chapters, there are some divisions by changed from the Meredith’s story to Connie’s and back. This upset some because chapters often provide places where you can lay the book down and think and feel more about what you have read. I missed those little opportunities for contemplation. On the whole I would recommend this book wholeheartedly.I received an ARC of Silver Girl for a guest for Booking with Bingo but my views on this book are my own.
