    World War II has just ended when Mikhail finds a dying man and his German shepherd, Zasha, in the woods. It's dangerous - some say traitorous - to own a German dog after Germany attacked Russia, so Mikhail must keep Zasha a secret to keep her alive. But Mikhail's rival, Katia, is determined to find the dog she is sure he's hiding. At the same time, a soldier named Dimitri is breeding a new Russian dog at a nearby farm. So many dogs were lost to starvation and in combat that the country is in dire need of every kind of dog. Dimitri, too, has suspicions of Zasha's existence, and would like nothing more than to add her to his breeding program. However, Dimitri will have to compete with the armed dog thieves who are also on her trail. Mikhail's inspiring journey to save his best friend, the last German shepherd in Russia, forces him to face some of life's hardest lessons about war, hate, forgiveness, hope, love, and man's best friend.

      When Mikhail and his family encounter Zasha, they decide they want to keep her. She's a beautiful German Shepard and that is a problem in Russian just after WWII has ended. The family faces threats from dog stealers, a nosy neighborhood girl, and must keep Zasha a secret. A quick read with tough, likeable characters. It's a gentle story with things wrapped up neatly.

      This book had a slow start and i do not like that in books. I did not read more than half way through so I do not know a lot about the book except that it is about a boy that finds a German Shepard and hides it from people how want her dead. The fact that i did not finish the book is some thing I wish I had not. So I am going to re read the hole book and see if i like it. But overall i did not like the beginning.

      In the beginning of this book, a 13 year old kid named Mikhail was walking through the woods. He saw a man with a German shepherd named Zasha. The man was begging for help and seemed seriously injured. So, Mikhail helped the man by bringing him home to his mom. She helped him by laying him in a bed and bringing him water and other things for him to eat and drink. Even with all of Mikhail's mother and his 9 year old sister Rina's help, the injured man died that night. Mikhail asks his mother if he can keep the dog because he knew the military would kill Zasha. They would most likely kill her because it is during World War 2 in Russia and Germany and Russia were enemies during this time. His mother lets Mikhail keep the dog as long as nobody outside the family finds out about Zasha. Through out the book, Mikhail and his older 15 year old brother Nikolai make many efforts at finding a hiding place for Zasha that nobody will find. People that are with the Russian military try to steal and kill any German shepherds that they could find. Then Mikhail and Nikolai found out about a man that was going to start a kennel to create a Russian super breed. The man asked if he could have some of Zasha's puppies when she gives birth to them for the super breed. In the end, Mikhail's father finally comes home from the war after 2 years of being gone and never writing. I liked this book because I love dogs and I also like to learn about WWll history. I think it had a lot of action and adventure. I will most likely be reading it for a second time.

      At the end of World War II, it is considered traitorous to own a German Shephard in the Soviet Union, but 13-year-old Mikhail is determined to save his. A great "boy and his dog" story with an intriguing background and setting.

      Russia, just after World War II ends. Dogs are very rare in Russia. They were either recruited for the army or killed because they were German. Although the war is over, there is still a lot of anti-German sentiment remaining. In this environment, young Mikhail finds a German Shepherd named Zasha. Can he keep her safe from prying eyes, particularly those of dog thieves? The ending is a little neat and tidy, but I found the audiobook engrossing.

      I recommend this book to anyone who has ever owned a dog. It shows how dogs are an important part of your family. This book takes place in Post WWII Russia, and is about a boy who's dad is M.I.A and the boy, Mikhail, gets a German Shepherd from a dying man. The only problem is Russia doesn't want anything German in the country after the war. Mikhail must hide his new dog, Zasha, to prevent the Russians from getting her. Mikhail tries to find a safe place for Zasha to stay because some strange men keep coming by asking if Mikhail is harbouring any dogs. Mikhail also learns that not every Russian agrees with all the laws. This book was a very exciting historical fiction book. There was lots of suspense like when the men came by looking for Zasha, you wondered if they would capture her. There was also a large and shocking surprise at the end of the book. This book was very interesting and I found it hard to put down. I wished that the author made the book longer with more content because I was disappointed when this book ended, but other than that it was a great book. The author made you feel what Mikhail was feeling when he thought he could lose Zasha. Anyone with a dog would know they would be devastated if they lost their own dog. The author also greatly described what Russia was like in the 1940s. He made you feel like you were with the characters. This was a great WWII era book. I look forward to reading more books by Randi Barrows.

This book is taking place when the Germans and the Russians do not get along. Mikhail and his family are Russians but they decide to keep the German dog when the man/ owner dies. They keep Zasha in there house/ hiding all times because they think the Russians will kill her just like they did with all of the other dogs. Mikhail builds a strong relationship with Zasha. I think this book is great to read because it’s a real touching story for all who have a “man’s bestfriend.” If you like reading stories that are history/ animal loving, then this is definitely the book for you! The passion Mikhail shows for Zasha is so admiring. But also all the intense and crazy things that happen make this book even better! And I’m sure many people can relate to it. When you read this book, you wouldn’t want it to end. That is how good the book is! I love this book.
