When millionaire Paul Wheeler is murdered, his family retains renowned lawyer Derek Mitchell to defend the victim’s nephew Creighton—although the police have not charged the young man with the crime. Wheeler’s mistress Julie Rutledge, who is also a suspect, believes that Creighton is the killer despite his rock-solid alibi, and she’ll do almost anything in her quest to prove his guilt—even ruin Derek’s career. But as Derek learns of Creighton’s darker side, especially his bizarre fascination with movie murders, the more he agrees with Julie’s suspicion. The clock ticks down to a shocking ending as Derek and Julie join forces to find the truth. Has Creighton begun re-enacting cinema’s goriest scenes and, if so, who will be his unwilling co-stars? They won’t know until the final Smash Cut.

This story kept me interested as you were not sure which way it would turn or end up.

There were a couple nice twists within this fast moving mystery romance but on the whole, too much romantic passion and not enough passionate mystery. The killer is as annoying as he is evil and obviously guilty from the get go. His habit of spouting movie quotes wears thin really fast—especially since the lines chosen are mostly over-played before appearing in the story (first line quoted is the box of chocolates line from Forest Gump—knew I was in trouble at that point). Every description feels like it is mundanely described twice as if that will make it more vivid instead of just using a clean fresh description. Maybe she’s just padding her word count. There are attempts to make you question who the killer is, but since the only other viable option presented is the romantic female lead, and you just know a happy ending is coming, so that limits the options really to one. I was practically praying for the irrational insertion of someone else just to make it interesting. The initial meeting and hook up of the romantic leads turns out to have occurred for such a ludicrous reason that I was angry for the rest of the book. Also frustrating that two adults who are supposedly at the top of their respective professional worlds (ace defense attorney and art gallery owner) seem to have the emotional maturity of twelve year olds. Especially frustrating is the male lead. Supposed to be the most sought after defense attorney in the country—which would seem to indicate a certain sharpness of mind—who loses any analytical ability the moment any distraction occurs. The conclusion does gather some steam…but by then I was just pushing through to finish it. Maybe I was creating my own steam.

The elevator doors open on the eighth floor and a masked man jumps in the doorway waving a gun, demanding that everyone's jewelry be put in the bag. Moments later Paul Wheeler, with his mistress Julie Rutledge by his side, dies when the gun goes off.

The Wheeler family approaches defense attorney Derek Mitchell to defend Paul Wheeler's nephew, Creighton, even though he has not been charged with the crime. In fact, Creighton has a solid alibi for the time of the murder. Despite the alibi, Julie is convinced that Creighton is involved, particularly as it was known he what to inherit Paul's millions.

Creighton lives in a world of movies in his head. Every move, every utterance is from an old movie. Julie is caught in some lies and seems to be keeping secrets while blaming Creighton for the murder. And Derek finds himself growing more attracted to a beautiful woman he does not feel he can trust.

The plot swirls around the characters. And at the center of of the swirling is the truth of who is responsible for the murder of Paul Wheeler. But to get to the truth involves questions, sorting out answers, and life threatening actions.

Good on suspense part but weak on romance. I didn’t like Derek in the plane scene, it did not fit to his later actions. The book was leaking on relationship – building.

When a prominent Atlanta businessman is shot and killed during an armed robbery, it appears to be a situation of wrong place, wrong time. But his friend Julie Rutledge believes differently and sets out to prove that it was murder, orchestrated by the victim's nephew, Creighton Wheeler. Representing him is famed defense lawyer Derek Mitchell, who soon realizes that his client is as depraved as Julie claims. (summary from ISBN 1594134111)Brown has written another of her signature romantic suspense novels...the action moves lightning fast from beginning to end and the romance is hot and steamy.

I really didn't like this book all that much. I couldn't really get into it and i think it made it pretty obvious what was going to happen in the ending. Although there were times where you would question what was going to happen next I didn't enjoy it.

A multi-millionaire and his companion are walking out of an elevator in a very elite hotel. A person with a ski mask on is waiting for them and shoots the man. He falls down dead. His companion is shocked but spared. There are other people in the elevator as well and are shocked beyond belief. His family is notified and they do not know who could have done it. He has no enemies that they know of. Is it one of their former employees who has a vendetta against them? The family's son major in college was film and theatrical. Since he is a millionaire in his right, he has no interest in having a job. He likes to watch movies and play his tennis matches. He also lives out his life according to what movies he enjoys at the time. He quotes movie lines constantly and impresses people with this charming feature. Is he acting out a movie this time or is the killer a half a dozen characters that Brown has shown us in this book? Brown's books always leave you guessing who commits the murder until the end. She also has a twist at the end. And this book has a big one.

Great romantic thriller. Lots of surprises and great characters. I will definitely look for the sequel "Tough Customer". I won this book from Goodreads.

Not one of SB's finest, but the story kept me turning the pages, quickly enough, till the end. Derek and Julie seemed a nondescript pair and I didn't understand their atraction to each other. On the other had, the real villain of the piece, a real nasty piece of work, was very sharply drawn and that's when the story became alive. The killing of the dog was upsetting, though.

I didn't like this book as much as I have other books of hers. This one was a bit too Psycho for me and I hate it when animals are killed (Still haven't seen Blazing Saddles when they hit the horse, or the Godfather where worse was done). The book moved along without much lag so it get a medium review from me for the entertainment factor.

Awesome book! It's been awhile since I've read Sandra Brown, but I need to pick up a couple more of her books. This one was really really good!First of all, I read this book in one sitting. Couldn't put it down! It wasn't exactly what I would call a fast read, because I really had to pay attention to what was going on and couldn't skim over sections that didn't seem relevant. It was ALL relevant in this one! It's actually a book that I could read again just to see if I missed any details along the way. There were defiantly a couple of twists throughout and once the crime was solved there were several more pages to wrap up and wind down the story. I really liked that about this book. I don't like it when the end seems abrupt, and this one wasn't. It was perfectly completed and closed out. It didn't leave any unresolved issues for me.Julie and Derek are interesting characters. Their introduction to the reader is surprising but a great lead in to what these two are going to be going through. I was a little frustrated with the sexual tension between the two, but it works itself out later in the book which made me change my mind about that feeling.Overall, this is highly recommended. Great suspense and a little smut! If you like to guess how a book is going to end throughout the whole thing...this is your next novel!

A real suspense thriller with one of the nastiest villains to ever kill small animals as a child - made me check my door locks and hunker a little lower in my chair. Brown throws in the usual steamy romance and strong characterization to create a thrill-a-minute ride that keeps you turning pages right to the end.
