About this audiobook

When Judge Calvin Jeffries becomes the first sitting judge to be murdered while serving in office, charismatic criminal defense attorney Joseph Antonelli finds himself smack in the middle of a riveting case. As he works through the intricacies of a homicide audacious enough to strike at the heart of justice, the ensuing investigation and trial reveal a deadly trail of evil, shattered lives, and revenge. While challenging traditional notions of crime and punishment, the novel also calls into question the very principles of our judicial system and marks the breakthrough of a master storyteller. D.W. Buffas The Defense (Henry Holt, 1997) received great praise and grossed more than 40,000 hardcover copies. The Prosecution (Henry Holt, 1999) was also lauded by critics and garnered equally impressive sales.

I almost skipped this one because of negative reviews; finally started listening, and it grabbed me. I'm about halfway through, and already looking forward to the other books about Antonelli.

The entire storyline is realistically philosophical. I did not want to stop listening. Will be one of my all time favorites. The narration was masterful and blended perfectly with the main character.

I liked the first person defense attorney narrator immediately. The author wasn’t afraid to take some side trips in the character’s history to build depth by demonstrating the intelligence, kindness and conflicts of middle aged man. This was all key because the case he takes on might strain credibility if the reader didn’t trust the attorney and his investigator.
As a psychiatrist, my only criticism is the author’s lack of use of easily accessible information about the onset and symptoms of various psychiatric diagnoses: every doctor and nurse knows that schizophrenia does not suddenly come on after 30. To prevent spoilers all I’ll say is that while—amnesia is always a great tragic soap opera maneuver but no one who can drive a car is going to have amnesia. It is a neurological and psychiatric impossibility.
    Still loved the book.

5650. The Judgment, by D. W. Buffa (read 20 Sep 2019) This is the third Buffa novel I've read. Joseph Antonelli is a seasoned criminal defense lawyer in Portland, Oregon, who practices before a couple of evil judges. When evil Judge Jeffries is murdered he is succeeded by another evil judge Much of the book (especially Antonelli's love life) is boring before the accounts of the trials which I found full of interest. I could not help comparing the trial narrative with trials I have had. In our jurisdiction a local rule is that the lawyer examining a witness shall do so while seated at the counsel table except it handing an exhibit to the testifying witness. As I followed the trials in this novel , with the examining lawyer prancing around the courtroom during examination of a witness I felt that our rule was a good one The sequence of events is pretty incredible but does make for attention-holding interest. .

This book made my morning and evening commute bearable. Almost enjoyable! You will not figure it out until the last few chapters. This is a must read (hear). The courthouse scenes were accurate as was the criminal case jargon. Great storyline.

In The Judgement, Judge Calvin Jeffries is murdered. He had a brilliant legal mind, but was a villainous, evil person. Defense attorney Joseph Antonelli has had his share of run ins with the late judge and is none too sad to see him gone. After a second judge is killed and a homeless man who can barely speak is accused of the murder, Antonelli takes on the case. All of this traces back to a former legal associate of his, who is now in a home for the criminally insane after attempting to kill Antonelli years back. The plot in this novel is clever and well developed. I enjoyed seeing the development of who was behind the killings and how it was unveiled. It was interesting and atypical. The characterization was also well developed. There weren't many characters, and the ones that were in the novel seemed to count. The novel is fast paced. The ending was climactic but I thought it left a little to be desired. I didn't care much for the Antonelli romance in the story. It seemed thrown in and didn't really add anything. It seemed as if the author felt obligated to have a romance and just added it in. Otherwise, a strong thriller worth reading.Carl Alves - author of Blood Street
