About this audiobook
Sholem Aleichem
Sholem Aleichem, pseudonym of Solomon Rabinovitsh (1859–1916), was one of the preeminent classical writers of modern Yiddish literature. His literary pseudonym was derived from the Hebrew expression “shalom aleichem,” meaning “peace be with you.” He arrived in New York in 1906 (after barely escaping a pogrom the previous year) as the world’s most famous Yiddish writer. Attesting to his popularity in the New World, Aleichem’s funeral was among the largest New York had ever seen.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Unlike many online commenters, I am anything other than a Jew but I found Tevye's quotations of the Talmud and Tanakh a welcome yet unorthodox character trait.
It is a shame what has come unto Chava and her father too of the trampling of such segregating tradition. In his time, I might understand his reaction to Chava's relations with a non-Jew, but to me, his response is less than acceptable.
Anyhow, I heard of this well-written piece from non-other than the 1971 Fiddler on the Roof. Though the film differs in some details, I can enjoy both works of art. I shall now hurry to some other story of Alecheim's.
A fine read. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I enjoyed this book immensely. Great reader. Would highly recommend.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Not Jewish, but cried my eyes out. Utterly beautiful and gutting.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5amazing story I'm now going to watch the play fiddler on the roof, (which is based on this book). I'm not Jewish, and this is a tale of a Jewish man, steeply based in religion. But it doesn't matter, all can benefit from this story. I pray that all have the strength and courage of Tevye no matter what they are facing
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Reason read: ROOT, Alpha This is a collection of short stories by Yiddish author (pen name) that are the bases for the play and movie Fiddler on The Roof. A favorite of mine. It was good to read the story and sometimes the music would play through my head or a line would pop. There are more stories than what are in the movie. I like the musical better because I love the songs.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5“Tevye the Milkman” is a multifaceted gem, filled with wisdom, charm, lush descriptions and family relationships. Sholom Aleichem’s beautiful writing preserves the experiences and situations that confronted our grandparents. But it goes beyond the Jewish experience. Its themes are universal and often not so harmonious.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5As it is written, Absolutely better than the movie, but I want watch it again too
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is the second time I've read this classic. I loved the writing of Tevye, but found Railroad Stories repetitive, and not too interesting. I was less than thrilled with many of the portrayals.
