About this audiobook

On the day she was abducted, Annie O’Sullivan, a thirty-two-year-old Realtor, had three goals: sell a house, forget about a recent argument with her mother, and be on time for dinner with her ever-patient boyfriend. The open house is slow, but when her last visitor pulls up in a van as she’s about to leave, Annie thinks it just might be her lucky day after all.

Interwoven with the story of the year Annie spent captive in a remote mountain cabin—which unfolds through sessions with her psychiatrist—is a second narrative recounting the nightmare that follows her escape: her struggle to piece her shattered life back together, the ongoing police investigation into the identity of her captor, and the disturbing sense that things are far from over.

The truth doesn’t always set you free.

Still Missing is a shocking, visceral, brutal, and beautifully crafted debut novel about surviving the unsurvivable—and living to bear witness.

Chevy Stevens

CHEVY STEVENS lives on Vancouver Island with her husband and daughter. When she isn’t working on her next book, she’s hiking with her two dogs on her favorite mountain trails and spending time with her family. Chevy's current obsessions are vintage Airstreams, Hollywood memoirs, all things mid-century modern, and stand-up comedians--not necessarily in that order. Her books, including Still Missing, a New York Times bestseller and winner of the International Thriller Writers Award for Best First Novel, have been published in more than thirty countries.

The story is told like we're either Annie's therapist, or in the room during the sessions. I loved this set up for the novel. This way, Annie went over what happened leading up to the abduction, the kidnapping itself, being held against her will for a year, and her difficulties trying to assimilate back to real life. Nothing is linear - some sessions deal with her adjusting, some focus on her trying to figure out why she was kidnapped and who the man was. We're right along with her as new developments come up in her case, and the resolution is the case's closing. Very well-written and suspenseful. It sucked me in, and I found myself thinking about it whenever I wasn't reading it. I'm still thinking about it, really.

Chevy Stevens is generally one of my favorite authors. For whatever reason, this one just didn’t do it for me. It was good, and I liked the twist, but the book wasn’t one of my favorites of hers.

3-3.5/5. The story was well told and the narrator ‘s often flat affect fit well with a trauma victim, though this might be better read in print vs as an audiobook… the narration was good; I just didn’t click with her.
There were a few pet peeves that may well have just been me, but they niggled at me through the course of the entire book. The character’s name, Annie, did not fit her personality AT ALL - she was tough, business like and strong, both before and after horrific events - she would have gone by Ann and lost the cutesy Annie after childhood. Annie constantly referring to her abductor as the ‘freak’… monster or bastard would have felt less childish/more intimidating. Freak just doesn’t fit/is too mild.
The narrator’s high pitched whiney auntie voice for the mom didn’t fit… when the character is described as a beautiful tiny ‘adult tinkerbell’ with a drinking/smoking /pill habit, go with sexy/husky/seductress ANYTHING BUT SHUDDER INDUCING AUNTIE!! Drive me insane every time she spoke!
There will be an event cliche and inappropriate that takes place btwn 2 characters that had me rolling my eyes. You’ll know when you get there.
The ending was nicely collected and didn’t feel rushed.

50/50 I’d read/listen to more by either the narrator or the author.

I haven't listened to a story in a long time that kept me this riveted. I cried a few times and was so surprised by some of the twists and turns that I just couldn't guess where it was going to end up. This was a really good book.

This is my first book by Chevy Stevens.

This book is written in sessions with Annie’s psychiatrist .

Annie a realtor is abducted from a slow open house.

The sessions take you through the pain, fear, and horrible things she endured while taken for a year.

When Annie returns home after her abduction she had PSTD and has a lot to deal with in her personal life.

This book will make you cry, fear, and gasp and the horrible things this woman goes through.

It’s a tough read with all the heavy material but not a hard read. Chevy Steven’s did a great job with this book. I look forward to reading the rest of her books.
