About this audiobook

Twisted Triangle is the first complete narrative thriller about the sensational story of Margo Bennett, a married FBI agent who had a love affair with bestselling author Patricia Cornwell and whose jealous husband, Gene Bennet, a superstar FBI undercover agent, kidnapped and attempted to murder her. When the case first came to trial, it was reported in Vanity Fair, Newsweek, People, the Washington Post, and the New York Times. Almost every profile of Cornwell, written in the United States and abroad every time she releases a book, mentions this case and her relationship with Margo. Margo also was the inspiration for the heroine in Hostage Negotiator, a TV movie that came out in 2001.

Opening up for the first time, Margo Bennett has given Caitlin Rother complete personal access, sitting for interviews and turning over photographs, documents, records, and private papers. Twisted Triangle includes the crazy dynamics of Margo and Gene Bennett's family; the brilliant FBI undercover career of Margo's husband, Gene; the lesbian affair with celebrity author Pat Cornwell; Gene's reactive kidnapping and attempt to kill Margo; Gene's insanity defense; the trial that validates Margo's story and shows she was telling the truth all along; and a happy ending to her tale of survival.

I enjoyed the story but thought that they dragged it out a bit more than necessary. It is a little scary to think that a former FBI agent can go that crazy - and almost get away with it!

When I picked up this book at the library, I had no idea that the "famous crime writer" talked about in the subtitle was Patricia Cornwell. I'd have picked it up anyway, but there's something incredibly sensationalistic by playing up "Patsy's" involvement in the whole tale. Yes, she knew the people involved, and yes, apparently, she did sleep with Margo. However, even by the book's description of their "affair," it was extremely short-lived and not very serious at all. So I think the author is trying to drop "Patsy's" name as often as possible in this book to ride on Ms. Cornwell's coattails. That said and out of the way, I didn't care for the simplistic and plain writing style used in this book. The crime itself is interesting, but it's related to the reader in about the most boring way I can possibly imagine. It was very, very easy to put this book down and let it be for a long while. The only reason I ended up finishing it at all was because it was due at the library, and I hate returning books that I haven't finished reading. Some may wonder how an apparently intelligent woman (Margo) would allow herself to be sucked into such a mess. After having seen my mother live in similar circumstances for over half of her life, I know that it happens to the best of women, especially when they grew up seeing their own mother go through the same thing (as Margo did). And reading about Margo's struggles with her own sexuality were interesting, although unfortunately mostly glossed over in the book. Had the story been told by a writer with a more riveting style, I'm sure the book would have been more interesting.

In many ways, I can understand why the FBI community is very skeptical about this former female agent who had been laid astray by her FBI husband for years into fraudelent scams, etc. Even to the point of being brainwashed by her husband, tortured, and raped for a week shortly before this female agent was to give testimony against her husband. Even I find myself doubting her story. I kept wanting to ask her through the pages...."why didn't you fight? why didn't you stand up and stop all this nonsense?" Her story is a bit complicated, and does involve a very brief relationship with a famous crime writer who later dissed the female agent. Either this agent was one very dense woman, or she's someone who allowed herself to be blinded to everything. A very disturbing look into how even the best and brightest of us can fall.
